NORMAN CASH DAY Sul Ross and Alpine Honor Big League Baseball Champion Detroit Tiger first baseman Norman Cash was ad¬ mitted to the NAIA ' s Hall of Fame at a special day in his honor at Alpine on Nov. 11. Cash was the fifth baseball player awarded this honor by the NAIA. Cash, a graduate of Sul Ross State College won the league batting title with a .361 average, highest for a Tiger since Charley Gehringer led the league with a .371 in 1937. He also topped the league in hits with 193 and poled 41 home runs, an all time record for left-handed Tiger batters. The six foot, 190-pound first baseman graduated from Sul Ross State in 1955, and spent the next two seasons with Waterloo of the Three-I League, batting .334 in 1956. Following military service, he played at Indianapolis and with the Chicago White Sox, before be¬ ing traded to Detroit on April 12, 1960. Executive Secretary A. O. Duer of the NAIA pre¬ sented the award plaque to Cash. Norman Cash has been recommended to our awards committee as a stu¬ dent and athlete of the highest type while at Sul Ross State, and his play in professional baseball since then certainly makes him deserving of the NAIA f s highest honor, said Duer in announcing the award NORM CASH 157 MELVIN BARNES San Angelo Junior FRANK BROCATO Alpine Junior KELBY BROWN Kerrville Sophomore The Last Roundup.. In ex¬ change they also broaden our horizons by relating to us their own daily life in their homeland. Choon Gu Kang (known as leannie ), a graduate student in education; Bon Gul Koo, a graduate in history; and Bon Hyup Koo, a sophomore pre-med major, have contributed to students on the Sul Ross campus a greater understanding of the Far East, especially of Korea, our foreign students ' native country. During an interview or visit with leannie or the Koo brothers, one will realize that although our foreign students are more famil¬ iar with a contrasting way of life, their dreams and efforts are similarily directed toward peace; and through such contact one learns to respect the similarities and differences of other peoples. Korean students Bon Gul Koo, Choon Gu Kang, and Bon Hyup Koo are representative of the foreign students who have promoted the international atmosphere and interest on the Sul Ross campus and in the community. aWb rfw Jm Bon and leanie enjoy sharing their American college experiences on a small, friendly campus. 208 Taking time out from their studies, Bon, leanie, and Ban ' relax in the SUB for a game of chess or to converse with othei students. The roar becomes exceptionally loud for at least one week in every spring semester. This particular week has been proclaimed Western Week. l Xhe Sul Ross campus becomes a typical Wanted: Dead or Alive, Gunsmoking, Pala¬ din playground. The student body elects a sher¬ iff and deputies, who set up rules of law and order for their week of western reign. These rules set the law for dress, which must be western, behavior, which is definitely frontier, and even roll your own cigarettes, which often causes an epidemic of nicotine fits.
