TANGERINE BOWL The 1948 football season found the Sul Ross Lobos making their most impressive record in history. The Lobo football squad amassed a total of 431 points against their opponent ' s 113? They won their thirteenth consecutive confer¬ ence game (winning the last three games ot the 1947 season) and for the second consecu¬ tive season they have won the New Mexico Conference title. The Lobos were the only un¬ beaten and untied team in Texas during the 1948 football season, and they were among the twenty-six unbeaten and untied collegiate football teams in the nation! After their ten straight victories during the regular season, the Lobos accepted a bid to play in the Tangerine Bowl at Orlando, Florida. They they fought the Murray State (Kentucky) Thoroughbreds to a 21-21 tie. How was it done? Coach Pierce summed it up like this: We have some outstanding players, but it was the incentive of the entire group that brought us through to victory. Our boys had the desire to play and win and there was splendid co-operation among the players. Halfback Ted Scown was the nation ' s lead¬ ing collegiate scorer, making 24 touchdowns in ten games for a total of 144 points, ten points ahead of second place contender Fred Wendt of Texas College of Mines. Guard lohn Waldrum and Scown made the Little All-American team. Waldrum ' s consist¬ ent work in the line was of unequaled value to the success of the Lobo squad. Co-Captain Frank Barton ' s educated foot booted nine consecutive conversions against New Mexico State Teachers ' College and nine out of ten conversions against St. Michaels Col¬ lege of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Barton ' s level¬ headed actions and directions made him an outstanding field general on the gridiron. Otis Parks enabled the Lobos to emerge from many tight spots with his long-range kicking. It was never unusual to see him punt the pigskin for seventy-odd yards. Space does not permit the mentioning of the individual achievements of the Lobos, but to we who know the players, we know that without each and every one of the Lobos on the 1948 roster, we could not have completed such a successful year. The untiring efforts of the cheer leaders and the colorful exhibitions staged by the seventy-five piece Lobo band were great contributors to the Lobos victorious year. The extraordinary and spec¬ tacular parades performed by the Lobo Band quickened the heartbeats of all who saw them. To our graduating Lobo football players, we bid ' Bon Voyage : To those players remaining with us, It will be another victorious season next season. ABBOTT BUDDY NICHOLS I AMES WILLIAMS If Army had lost a game during the past three seasons, it would have been a national upset. The same situation seems to have applied to our Lobo basketball team this year, after such a successful football season. We do not offer excuses or apologies, all we ask you to do is look at the conference scores, and you can easily see how the Lobos could have fallen into the winning column. The crucial decision of every game was determined in the last few minutes of each game. It seemed as if Lady Luck made per¬ manent friendly relations with the lads on the other side of the score board. Even though the Lobo basketeers failed to make a great impression in the conference standings, no one will ever know how thrilling the games were unless they had attended each and every game played by the Lobos! One bright Saturday afternoon, last Winter, the left-overs from the athletically inclined young men of Sul Ross, began searching for a way to expend their pent up energy. A meet¬ ing of all Rossonians, interested in basketball, was called by Coach Perryman. After hours of planning, the program was put forward. Creaks and groans of the lame and maimed filled the campus for the ensuing two weeks. After the smoke and haze had cleared from the gymnasium, we found that the closed league had been won by the very agile basketeers from the Air Base. Close on their heels were the campus lads, Hancock Hall. Co-op produced a team capable of winning a very decisive third place in the closed league. As they progressed on into the field of selected athletes an open league was formed. Many days and nights of work¬ outs and secret plays were toiled over. The masters of the open league proved to be the Hawks. The Bell Boys were a worthy second place team and Rosie ' s CO-OP Top row: Taylor, Miller, Wilson Bottom row: Caverly, White, McMasters. HOMECOMING The daylong program started with registration of Ex ' s at eight A. M. Jerry Kerby sells “special tickets. HOMECOMING Paul Pritchard, principal speaker of Homecoming assembly program, addressed student body and huge throng of Exes on Our Debts. The annual Sul Ross Homecoming was held on Saturday October 23, when a post war record throng of ex-students returned to the campus to participate in the active program and renew former class associations and friendships in keeping with the annual traditional event. Many former students expressed the opinion that the 1948 homecoming was the most successful and enjoyable reunion of the group that has been held in years. One of the high-lights of the Homecoming pro¬ gram was the best football game of the season on the home field when the Lobos topped the powerful University of Corpus Christi by a 21-14 score.
