These pages give you a pictorial view of the fun, the social activities, and the more serious phases dealing with college life at your Alma Mater. Herein are the familiar faces of your teachers and the friends with whom you associated. They make up a kaleidoscope of images that will re¬ main with you through life. Many hours of industry were given to the 1948 Brand, and out of your own daily doings, it has been our pleasure to create the fabric of this book. DEDICATION. After being admitted as a member to the New Mexico Conference in the first part of the year, the Lobos scheduled five conference games for the season. They proceeded to chum over all conference competition and annex the title in their first year of plav. f m % Although they were undefeated in conference games, the Scarlet and Grey were less fortunate in non-conterence play and dropped three games while winning only two. All in all, coaches Paul “Red” Pierce and Jack Perryman had a very successful season, considering the injury jinx that — followed their team from the beginning of the season to the final game. k ’W2! Phm y,f«£ PASSING AND LINE PLAY One outstanding feature usually puts a ball club out as “the team to watch for,” but there were two outstanding fea¬ tures that marked the Lobos during the past grid season. From the very beginning, the locals were touted as hav¬ ing one of the outstanding lines in Texas colleges. After a couple of games, they added the passing threat for which they were feared in the remainder of the games of the year. To fully show the potency of these factors during the year, it is noteworthy to say that the yards gained from line play, and the yardage from passing, were nearly equal. With such a combination, it is no small wonder that Sul Ross was marked as “the team to watch for” by their grid foes during the 1947 season. Thrilling indeed was the performance that night. Hard blocking and tackling, thrilling plays and clean sportsmanship were the fea¬ tured activities on the gridiron as the locals lost a close 9-6 contest. It was that last min¬ ute field goal in the final period that deprived the Lobos of a tie with their favored adver- THE HOMECOMING GAME Though involved in their first conference race, the Lobos pointed throughout the year to the Homecoming game with the Texas A. I. eleven. The powerful Javelinas came to Sul Ross with an enviable undefeated record, and was boasted about as one of the strongest grid aggregations among minor colleges of the state. Hundreds of exes thronged the Sul Ross campus for the day’s fetes in their honor. That night they packed Jackson Stadium to the brim, longing for an upset by the Alma Mater. sanes. TED SCOWN DON BINGHAM OLTON POOL BOBBY HIGDON NEW MEXICO CONFER- Even though the Lobos were “newcomers” in the New Mexico Conference at the opening of the 1947 grid season, they were ranked as co-favorites with Adams State of Alamosa, Colorado, the defending champions. This early season specula¬ tion materialized throughout the year until the Lobos trounced the Coloradans by a 34-12 count on the local gridiron to virtually annex the title in their last home game. During the five games they played against conference competition, the Lobos amassed a total of 197 points while holding the opposition to a scant 27 digits. These comparative figures show that the Scarlet and Grey had a potent defense as well as an exceptional offense on the field. Only one conference team held the “champs” to a 20 point victory margin and that came in the final conference tilt played against the New Mexico Teachers at Silver City with a 22-2 final count. J. M. HARRELL GENE SWEET RALPH WHEELER DON NORTON ENCE CHAMPIONS OF 1947 Although any team performs better on the “home field, a quick glance at the past season shows that the Lobos were just as effective playing on enemy territory. During the year, they played only two of their conference games at home, having an 86-12 combined score against their conference foes. On the road, the combined defensive and offensive strategy of the Lobos was sufficient for them to gather in 111 points while holding the combined opposition to only 15 points. This clearly indicates the mental as well as physical preparation with which the Rossonians were prepared as they went through the five-game con¬ ference schedule undefeated and to be crowned champions during their first active year of conference inter-collegiate football since the close of World War II. Winning a Conference with the enviable record that the Lobos maintained is something to point out with pride . . . but the loss of three non-Conference tilts against strong outside competition, deflated the record for the Scarlet and Grey. Opening the season against the San Angelo Rams, the Lobos performed sluggishly while the outstanding performance by the opposition resulted in an upset loss of 18-7. It was midway in the season that the Lobos again tasted defeat, this time at Las Cruces, New Mexico, against New Mexico A. M. Holding the victors to a 14-14 tie at halftime, the locals could muster no offense in the last half and the defense was ineffective as they dropped a 27-14 contest. The bright spots in the non¬ conference games came with a 27-0 win over Daniel Baker on Jackson Field, and a 26-6 victory over the Brookes Army Medical Center in San Antonio in the closing game of the season. The other five games were conference tilts with undefeated Lobos running roughshod over all competition. Sul Ross will maintain its high standing among the teams of the New Mexico Conference next fall, with only four lettermen lost by graduation. Under favorable conditions, the Scarlet and Grey will prove to be much stronger in the coming year with the addition of new blood to the host of returning lettermen. JACK BLANCHARD RAYMOND WALSTON JACK BELCHER TYRUS DAVIS THURMAN WHITE LEWIS NORRIS OUTSTANDING FEATS OF THE SEASON With the close of any football year every school can look back and pick out the outstanding performances during the season. Such is the case with the Sul Ross Lobos. Glenn Beard, fullback, had an average of some nine yards per try as he lugged the pigskin against the opposition during the year. This average was among the highest in the nation. Another Lobo who reached into the national collegiate competition was Otis Parks. Playing at an end position, Parks often came into the backfield to handle the kicking department. He maintained a 40.2 yard per kick over the entire ten- game schedule. Charles “Put” Brandon, quarterback, was outstanding as a field general, but his publicity came through his left arm as he completed 37 out of 76 passes for a total of 645 yards to help overcome the opposition during the year. John Waldrum, tackle, tore opposing lines to shreds placing himself among the outstanding line performers in the area. George Webb, guard, controlled most of the line play in the center of the line on both defense and offense, gaining much fame during the year. All five of these men were placed on the All-Conference team. CHARLES DIVELBISS CHUBBY WELLS S3 M H X 33 n O ' -! S3Wr«! Coach “Red” Pierce and President R. M. Hawkins have many letters on file commending the squad. “This season was the first for the basketeers of the Bar-SR-Bar to play in a conference since 1938,“ stated Pierce. They played 10 conference games and won six, and traveled a total of 7,200 miles to play the 26-game season schedule. Of 1. Adams State College 2. Eastern New Mexico State College 3.
