I A SUL ROSS STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE PUBLICATION VOLUME XXV EX LIBRIS FOREWARD Twenty-five years ago, when our college was looking forward to its third year of life, a group of industrious students pooled their imagina¬ tions and creative skills with the idea of pub¬ lishing the first yearbook of Sul Ross State Normal College. The result of their labors was the 1922 edition of the Brand. This book, the 1947 edition, rounds out the first quarter-century of the Brand’s existence. This milestone marks a very important era for Sul Ross. Now we have another era before us. Colleges and universities all over America are expanding to cover the ever-increasing needs of the grow¬ ing enrollment. Sul Ross State Teachers Col¬ lege is no exception for, in this twenty-fifth year of the Brand, we have a bright and hope¬ ful outlook for the future of our college. A. Collins President William L. Kerr Vice-President H. A. Turner Secretary To the Graduating Class of 1947: The greatest responsibility of education is to instill into youth the right philoso¬ phy of living. This must include faith in God and humanity. The individual without respect for and confidence in others is a failure. Be willing to see two sides of every problem. Get the other persons viewpoint. Be natural, not a pretender in anything. Never forget that you possess a noble heritage born of toil and suffering and the blood of your ancestors. Dr. R. M. Hawkins I congratulate you upon the successful completion of the courses of study prescribed, of which your diplomas are tangible evidence. I congratulate you even more heartily upon the intangible values which I trust your college years have wrought — growth in self-knowledge, self-reverence, self-control, increased appreciation of truth, beauty, righteousness, and service. I rejoice with you in all your beautiful memories of your college days. It is for you, graduates of Sul Ross, and for other college graduates throughout our country, with trained minds and consecrated spirits, to decide whether a government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall perish from the earth. May happiness and contentment be yours in all the years to come. R. M. Hawkins President Dean of College Dr T. H. Etheridge Message from the Dean The school year of 1946-47 has been one of remarkable change and adjustment. The largest enrollment in the history of Sul Ross State Teachers College has affected the Institution profoundly, especially since the majority of students are men for the first time in her history. This has meant necessary changes in housing accommodations, in that a girls’ dormitory has been taken over completely by men students with a concentration of girls in one building. “Toonerville,” and the Airbase housing have further produced changes in Sul Ross student life. Despite all this, is is a matter of pride and pleasant reflection, both to the faculty and the students themselves, that a fine spirit of cooperation and an honest effort at mutual help¬ fulness have permeated the school, at all times. Despite lack of books and shortages in equipment, at the first of the year, both students and teachers carried on in a fine spirit of patient understanding. Such an attitude in the fall made the work in the spring a pleasant school experience. With an enlarged student group came an increase in the faculty. New faces and new ideas made an advance in both the number of offerings and in the enrichment of the school courses. In future years these professors will look back on their first experiences in this institution with delight as well as will the students who have enjoyed their tuition. This year marks the resumption of intercollegiate sports, particularly that monarch of students’ sports, Football. Basketball again came into its own. The tfand thrilled us with strains of sweet music and delight¬ ful convolutions. All this will be grist for our memories. To those who will be welcomed back to Alma Mater next year, this Brand will be an earnest of happy school da vs to come; to Seniors who will go out from her sacred halls, it will be a golden page of memories, a sign of benediction. With a sincere wish for the happiness and success of everyone, it is a high honor to have a part in send¬ ing the Brand on its mission. T. H. Alberto Rede, or just “Beto,” has carried his own spot in Sul Ross basketball history, but has winning ways off the field as well as on. Betty Jane Maxwell, an artist who know the art of friendship, is capable, and is one of the most popular girls in the Senior Class. Ann Gibson, an unusual scholar with an unusual sense of humor, and secretary of almost every organization, deserves all the praise received from both faculty and students. J. C. Lewis, our student association president, has been adept not only on the gridiron but in being an efficient leader in student affairs. Marie Dowdy, known about the campus for her friendliness, is willing and able to perform any task asked of her. James Washburn, a person with the quick smile and good conversation, is a man of scholarship. Dora Hagelstein, an editor with a knack for making friends and keeping them, will be remembered for her outstanding literary achievement. Thomas Barrow, or “Tommy’ to other good sportsmen, has left his standards on the field for Lobos who will follow him. Jess Ward, prominent about the campus as well as in his studies, is expected to be equally successful in his chosen field of business. James Rogers, an active man with an active mind, has been and will be a good leader for any organization. • .Mmi ti iUJ 4 iM| 4fc$£ m |r BPi ' -?W f tff f §$ 08 wr . • • jrit • • ■ ' At ■ ,«pImp K %i i V 2 iSJaasg Z. 5 f ' frs v « ,.
