Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1946 volume:

i ALMA MATER I. Where the rolling plains of Texas End in mountains high, There’s a land where glorious sunsets Flame in peerless sky. CHORUS Ring, ye Alpine hills, with music, Joyous songs we ll raise Hail to thee,—O Sul Ross College Thee we gladly praise. II. ’Tis a land of pioneer spirit. Free as bracing air, Where a handclasp means a welcome, Friendship glad to share. III. There our Texas youths do gather, Heeding Wisdom’s call, Learn to love thee, Sul Ross College, Love thee best of all. —Rose Sharp Brewer. THE 1946 BRAND ANNUAL PUBLICATION OF SUL ROSS STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE ALPINE, TEXAS Lois Burleson, Editor Henry Smith, Business Manager Zona Hinson, Asst. Editor A1 Rushing, Asst. Business Manager FOREWORD During our years at Sul Ross, each of us has in his own way striven to lay his own foundation for a useful life, and to assure the fulfillment of his own ambition. In spite of our diverse aims, we have in common sought and gained knowledge from our studies, guidance from our faculty, fellowship among ourselves, and inspiration from the enduring beauty manifested in the country surrounding us. Despite a world previously trampled with oppression , we still possess, and will always maintain, freedom of thought and action; through broad learning we have acquired those priceless possessions—sound minds and spirits capable of meeting any situation which might arise. We have sought for, andrwill surely attain, mankind’s dream of a just world. May our knowledge and love of truth ever remain our common and firm foundation for hope. ft TO THOSE ROSSONIANS WHO LEFT OUR CAMPUS AND GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR US WE HUMBLY DEDICATE THIS VOLUME A S7I27 TWIN SISTERS MITRE PEAK ADMINISTRATION BUILDING LIBRARY BUILDING LAWRENCE HALL HANCOCK HALL THE CO-OP THE BAND HALL AND COTTAGES THE MUSEUM KOKERNOT LODGE THE GREENHOUSE THE PRESIDENTS ' HOME SMCW SCEMES JANUARY SNOW BEAUTY JANUARY SNOW BEAUTY orttimfcs ADMINISTRATION CLASSES ORGANIZATIONS PERSONALITIES ACTIVITIES SNAPSHOTS ADVERTISING BOARD OF REGENTS OF THE STATE TEACHERS COLLEGES OF TEXAS First Row, left to right: Mr. Harrell, Dr. Mills, Mrs. Beretta, Lt. TURNER, Secretary Austin MY FRIENDS: THE YEAR IS DONE! You have discovered that a true college is a place where the spirit of youth finds a chance to experiment with life, to listen to the noblest voices of the past, to tune in with the voices of the present, as well as to heed the inner call of youth itself. Sul Ross has furnished you a beautiful world of friendships and an ideal forum for developing character, the keenest sympathy for all good causes, and a sense of brotherhood which knows no limit of faith, nation, vocation, or pro¬ fession. You stand on the threshold of a new era. As pioneers of a new century in the history of Texas, you are trail-blazers in a new era that has for its ulti¬ mate goal the solution of problems, economic, social, governmental, spiritual, that confronts the world today. There is need for positive convictions on mat¬ ters of basic right and wrong. I know you will meet the challenge. To work with you has been a delightful privilege. It is my sincere wish that you will remember with pleasure and satisfaction your years in this—your college. Sincerely your friend. R. M. HAWKINS, President THE IN A UG URA TION DR. R. M. HAWKINS LT. S. A. KERR DR. H. W. MORELOCK DR. J. N. R. SCORE Our First Lady greets a student at the reception The farewell of Dr. Morelock, the welcome of Dr. Hawkins and the congratulations of Lt. Kerr The Inaugural Procession ■■ ■ « • This Brand records momentous changes in Sul Ross State Teachers College. It marks the passing of the first quarter-century of the school and the beginning of the second: the change from the classic administration of President Morelock to the dynamic administration of President Hawkins; and a change from the uneasy hopes of a people at war to a nation struggling to adapt itself to peace—a period when we have seen clearly history in the making. For our boys and girls in the vigor and enthusiasm of youth, who are going out courageously into the brave, new world, I express the confi¬ dence in and the desire for a worthy place in the theatre of world affairs. With an illustrious history behind it, the Press Club again became active this year. Publishing a student directory, sponsoring THE SAGE, a student maga¬ zine of creative writing, and working with the SKY¬ LINE and BRAND staffs, the members of the Press Club gained valuable experience in varied journalistic fields. The group also participated in the conference of the Texas Inter scholastic Press Association held in April at Paris Junior College. Jane Hendricks, June Barbee, and Joe Kennedy edited the student directory. Jamie Bilbo headed the staff of the SAGE, while Armilda Looney directed work for the BRAND and Dora Hagelstein the work for the SKYLINE. We present the 1946 BRAND with a feeling of gratitude that we were entrusted to help make a book that will be a record of our college days. We deeply appreciate the willing cooperation and support given us by the student body. It has been our hope to record the names and faces of our friends; those who have worked, studied, and played with us. If, when looking through this book in later years, you are reminded of a laugh here, or a sigh there, then we have reached our goal; if not, well it was fun to try.
