Suitland's Scarlet and White bands performed at athletic events and school functions during the year. Led by drum majors, Paul Ulrich and Harry Martindale and directed by James Lally, the musicians paraded through Wash- ington, D.C.. New York, and Winchester as well as through Suitland. ln order to raise funds to pay for their new uniforms, the Scarlet and White sold chocolate bars. ' . iz The promotion of school spirit was carried out this year hy the 1960 squad under its captain, Clau- dia Miller. Whenever possible they aimed to arouse thc interest and enthusiasm of the student hody through pep rallies and humorous skits involving memhers of the various teams. They carried on the night pcp rally for llomecoming xXlt'9lCCY1fl and werc seen cheering the Hams at football. haskethall. and soccer games. During the months of April and May. practices were held in preparation for the elimination of cheer- leaders for the following yearis squad. The try-outs were judged hy the sponsor. a physical education teacher, the squad's captain and the remaining senior cheerleaders. A , . N . . .
