Elected by the student body to represent and lead them, the Student Council with the guiding assistance of their sponsor, Nlrs. l'1'5 de. has presided over Suitland making 1959-60 a mem- orable school year. As a representative body the Student Council has regulated and planned student activities, provided a place for learning to work together and exchanging ideas, and has co-ordinated the student body, faculty and administration. The many varied activities of the Student Council include the Cel :Xcquainted Dance and Tea, the Sock Hop, Sadie Haw- kins Dance. a joint March of Dimes and lied Cross Drive, and the highly successful Toys for Tots Drive in which over 5,000 toys were contributed and repaired for needy children at Christ- mas. ln addition the Council has provided bus transportation for away basketball games, sold Suitland pennants and beanies, distributed schedule cards for games, chartered clubs, put up the Hall of Fame showcase, and sold eokes and hot dogs at games. H o n o r Society members are at- tentive as Tony Ranere speaks. lpha Chapter Endows 'T 5 'ii - L.. The Alpha Chapter of the National Honor Society endows its honors at its tapping and induction ceremony: held in the fall and spring of each school year. The members. who are highly respected by their fellow students, are chosen according to their leadership. scholarship. service, and character. Exemplifying their service to the school the Honor Society plans college night. publishes and sells S.H.S. handbooks. which are especially helpful to Soph- omores, and tutors students who need assistance in certain subjects. The N.H.S. also sponsors one of the highlights of the school year, the Homecoming Weekend. The three day affair includes a parade, a night pep rally with bonfire. the big game and a dance where the Homecoming Queen is crowned. The National Honor Society chooses a set of officers each semester. The officers for 1059-60 were president. Jim Pizzarelle and Jim Hutchisong vice- president.
