Pawns, Bugs Sharing mutual interest in chess as a game and a form of inter-high competition are the purposes of the Chess Club. Playing chess for recreation and learning to improve their games, the Chess Club also used their skill in par- ticipation with other schools in inter-high tournaments. The members also held a Chess Club party in March. Officers of the club were Tim Bailer, presidentg Steve Harrison, vice presidentg Barbara Smith, secretaryg and Gray Reese, treasurer. LeHermans, Railroad Clubs Are New CLUB l . L' Members of the Railroad club examine one of their train models. l f , in .f . all l Viewing movies, slides, and filmstrips of railroad activities and operating scale models of trains are among the varied activities of the Railroad Club. Under the direction of Mr. Kilbourne the club has taken several interesting and informative excursions on actual railroads. The romance of the railroad with its historic lore as it stitched the continent together with two bands of steel has proven a worthwhile addition to Suitland High School club activities. Fellow club members elected Lee Rogers, president: Roy Hartman, vice president: Grover Katzman, sec- retaryg and Diane Bickel, treasurer. The officers, sponsor, and members meet for the purpose of further- ing interests in railroading. 2 Q' i E. i l Members of the l.etterman's Club display their S's . The Varsity Letterman's Club formed by Mr. Kirk- land and four Suitland High School letterman has become available to all boys who have won a Suitland letter in any of the major sports. Temporary ofhcers were elected by the club under the sponsorship of Mr. Willett and Mr. Turner. They were Buddy Pollack, presidentg Lynn Hollabaugh, vice presidentg Bill Spauling, secretary: Paul McCon- key, treasurerg Bob Jenkins, sergeant-at-arms. The primary purpose of the Letterman's Club is to aid as a service organization. They fulfill this by serving as ushers at athletic and extra-curricular events.

Boys of the Hi-Y make plans for the Heart Hop. ..!,', jf Hi-Y, Tri-Hi-Y Give Many School Services M ' ,4- it mag ' 9. b Members of the Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y get together and decorate for the Heart Hop. To create, maintain, and extend throughout home, school, and community, high standards of Christian character, this is the aim of the Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y. Giving baskets of food to the poor at Thanksgiving and Christmas, singing Christmas carols, sponsoring the Heart Hop, putting on an Easter assembly, and partici- pating in athletic events, are among the organizations' many activities. Sponsored by Mrs. Koustenis, the Tri-Hi-Y is presided over by Ruth Ann Scott as presidentg Pat Umholtz, secretaryg Ann Johnson, trcasurerg Grace McDermott, sergeant at armsg and Sandra Norris, Chaplin. Bill Dickens presides over the Hi-Y along with Roger Estep, vice presidentg Frank Principle, secretaryg Bob DeChambeau, trcasurerg and Andy Johanson, sergeant at arms. Mr. McKnown is sponsor. Before making plans for the Easter Assembly, the Tri-Hi Y posts for their picture.
