Dance, Pep Clubs Offer Recreafion One of the newer clubs of Suitland, the Pep Club has done much to raise school spirit. Their main objective of stimulating pep at all games and helping in any way to make the rooting section a success are ably carried out. Besides attending all games and pep rallies, the Pep Club also operates as a service club. Rendering aid as hostesses for Career Day and College Night are also a few of their activities. Officers were Evelyn Walker, president, Pat Umholtz, vice president, Duane Pincuspy, secrctaryg Lavon Moore, treasurer, and Teresa McCurry, sgt. at arms. The sponsors were Miss Karras and Mr. Kirkland. Members of the Pep Club sing the Alma Mater at the first outdoor pep rally. . 3 , ,M ti. .iw .S 1 -V 5 li? I E f 1 Q . Mr. jack, Miss Rasmussen, and the Dance Club sit this one out. Teaching beginners to dance and improving advanced dancers were the main goals of this fairly new club, under the direction of Mr. Jack and Miss Rasmussen. In addition to improving their dance steps, the members also gained praise and confidence on their improved skill. Some of the dances taught were the fox trot, waltz, samba, rumba, tango, cha-cha-cha, and charleston. The club met twice a week, once after school on Mondays and one night a week on Tuesdays. The club is only open to seniors, and members had to have a partner before they could join. 141

Language, J.C.L. Performs Acfivifies Serving as an educational and social group, the Modern Language Club is among one of the most active at Suitland. Educational purposes include observing cultural features of Spanish and French civilization, field trips, visits to art galleries to observe French and Spanish art, an assembly for the student body, if possible, a program for the P.T.S.A. in both languages each year, and guest speakers at meetings. The social includes various parties and the annual picnic at Mrs. Duke's home, along with the entertain- ment obtained from the educational features. Ofiiciated by Sid Bosen, president, John Freedman, vice president, Ann Blair, secretary, Janice Pritchett, treasurer, and Gary Bowie, sergeant at arms, the club met the fourth Tuesday of each month. Mrs. Duke's Modern Language Club gather together for their yearbook picture. 1 5 E E 4 . -I vliikwjik-1 i i Members of Mrs. McGibbon's Junior Classical League are all smiles as the photographer takes their picture. Becoming acquainted with the gifts of classical civilization is the purpose of the Junior Classical League. Under the direction of Mrs. McGibbon, the JCL enjoyed two annual picnics, one being in the fall, the other in the spring, and viewing movies on Greece and Rome. In addition to enjoying the recreational benefits of 140 the club, the members are also interested in others. Each Christmas the JCL sends CARE packages to Greece or Italy. The oiiicers were, Joan Dickson, president, Edward Arnn, vice president, Pat Umholtz, secretary, Phoebe Sappington, treasurer, and Tim Bailer, sergeant at arms.

LeHermans, Railroad Clubs Are New CLUB l . L' Members of the Railroad club examine one of their train models. l f , in .f . all l Viewing movies, slides, and filmstrips of railroad activities and operating scale models of trains are among the varied activities of the Railroad Club. Under the direction of Mr. Kilbourne the club has taken several interesting and informative excursions on actual railroads. The romance of the railroad with its historic lore as it stitched the continent together with two bands of steel has proven a worthwhile addition to Suitland High School club activities. Fellow club members elected Lee Rogers, president: Roy Hartman, vice president: Grover Katzman, sec- retaryg and Diane Bickel, treasurer. The officers, sponsor, and members meet for the purpose of further- ing interests in railroading. 2 Q' i E. i l Members of the l.etterman's Club display their S's . The Varsity Letterman's Club formed by Mr. Kirk- land and four Suitland High School letterman has become available to all boys who have won a Suitland letter in any of the major sports. Temporary ofhcers were elected by the club under the sponsorship of Mr. Willett and Mr. Turner. They were Buddy Pollack, presidentg Lynn Hollabaugh, vice presidentg Bill Spauling, secretary: Paul McCon- key, treasurerg Bob Jenkins, sergeant-at-arms. The primary purpose of the Letterman's Club is to aid as a service organization. They fulfill this by serving as ushers at athletic and extra-curricular events.
