Group Sfudy Adds To School Subieds Several clubs have been developed at Suitland for the benefit of students who desire to go beyond the classroom in certain fields of study. The Biology Clubs, the Astronomy Club, the Junior Classical League, and the Math Club are open to students who are specially interested in these fields, One of the new clubs at Suitland this year was the Tri-Beta Biology Club, sponsored by Mr. Gruber. The members maintained all lab animals and speci- mens. Their main project was speaking to elementary school students in order to stimulate interest in biolo- gy. The officers of the club were Gretchen Voitel, director, Harry Hardy, assistant director: Pat Flournoy, secretary, and Edward Donn, treasurer. The members of the Astronomy Club, under the direction of Mr. Kilbourne, endeavored to create an interest in astronomy and to learn facts about the heavens around them. A few of their projects con- sisted of watching movies and filmstrips, and taking field trips. Mr. Kilbourne's Biology Club consisted of a group of students who showed a genuine interest in the 1- 2 study of biology or wished to prepare for professions in biology. They kept up with current events in biology, went on field trips, heard students talk on various phases of biology, and cared for a menagerie of local wildlife. This year's officers were Sandy Cas- tle, presidentg Myra Jordan, vice-president: Fulton Marshall, secretary, and Phyllis Halfpap, treasurer. The Math Club was created by Mr. T. S. Klein to create a greater interest in mathematics, to broaden certain aspects in the field of math and to help meet the national need for mathematicians. The ofhcers were Dick White, presidentg Boris Kim, vice-presi- dentg Janice Bennett, secretaryg and Bernie Kaufman, librarian. The Junior Classical League, under the sponsorship of Mrs. McGibbon, promotes the study of classical culture. A national organization, the l.C.L.'s activi- ties included a formal induction and participation by invitation in a Roman banquet at Bladensburg. The Library Club members handle all the work of run- ning: the school library. Siudenis Perform Exfra Service To School The Library Club seeks to promote the interests and ideals of the school library in order that the librarians may render their best service to their fellow-students and to their faculty. The Library Club. under the direction of Miss Billard. has performed a vital service to the school working to make the library a valuable aid for the 1.300 students vs ho have used it. The oflicers are. Gloria Perry, presi- dent: Louise Mitchell. vice president: Virginia Schmidt. secretary: Nlelissa Sinatra. treasurer: and Dean Howard. sergeant-at-arms. The members of the new Art Club enjoyed a profit- able year by indulging in everything from criticizing their individual sketches to visiting the art galleries dur- ing their leisure time. Miss Billings is the sponsor of this club whose purpose is BTO give students an opportunity to pursue their art with their own projects and aims in mindf, The bookstore. under the direction of Mr. Dixon and with the assistance of Rosalie Johnson, ,lerry Johnson, Doris Armes. ,lames Shipman, Fred Anderson. lsolina Rossi. Alice Hayden. and ,lane Bennett. completed a successful year of sales ranging from school supplies to necklaces. The store was open before and after school and during every lunch period.
