To The Sons Of Sulfland To us. the Scarlet and White team has always been the best. and whether our side wins or loses. we know that we can be proud because the spirit of sportsmanship and loyalty is always there. Whether it be football. basketball. baseball. or any other sport. our athletes have proven themselves worthy of our respect. ln the years to come we will forget the baskets they did not make. and the goals they failed to kick. But the years will never dim the way they inspired school spirit. C The highpoint of the season was the losing cause to traditional rival, Northwestern. Suitland dropped this contest to the Wildcats, 13-12, in the last seconds of play by missing an extra-point attempt. The gridder's one taste of victory came in their third game which was against Bethesda-Chevy Chase. whom they defeated 12-6. Another memorable battle occurred in the mud- soaked Rockville contest which ended in a deadlock. Jim Sita. senior end, and Junior Calub, junior quarterback, were co-captains of the Rams this season. Coach Walter Fedora was assisted by Mr. Romeo Rocca. line coach, and lVlr. Art Kirkland. backfield coach. Suitland's Junior Varsity football team, coached by Mr. Kirkland, came through to win their last game out of six contests. Although the team had comparatively little practice, they improved with each game. Coach Walt Fedora gives last minute instruction to co-captains Jim Sita and Junior Calub. The Biology Clubs, the Astronomy Club, the Junior Classical League, and the Math Club are open to students who are specially interested in these fields, One of the new clubs at Suitland this year was the Tri-Beta Biology Club, sponsored by Mr. Gruber. The members maintained all lab animals and speci- mens. Their main project was speaking to elementary school students in order to stimulate interest in biolo- gy. The officers of the club were Gretchen Voitel, director, Harry Hardy, assistant director: Pat Flournoy, secretary, and Edward Donn, treasurer. The members of the Astronomy Club, under the direction of Mr. Kilbourne, endeavored to create an interest in astronomy and to learn facts about the heavens around them. A few of their projects con- sisted of watching movies and filmstrips, and taking field trips. Mr. Kilbourne's Biology Club consisted of a group of students who showed a genuine interest in the 1- 2 study of biology or wished to prepare for professions in biology. They kept up with current events in biology, went on field trips, heard students talk on various phases of biology, and cared for a menagerie of local wildlife. This year's officers were Sandy Cas- tle, presidentg Myra Jordan, vice-president: Fulton Marshall, secretary, and Phyllis Halfpap, treasurer. The Math Club was created by Mr. T. S. Klein to create a greater interest in mathematics, to broaden certain aspects in the field of math and to help meet the national need for mathematicians. The ofhcers were Dick White, presidentg Boris Kim, vice-presi- dentg Janice Bennett, secretaryg and Bernie Kaufman, librarian. The Junior Classical League, under the sponsorship of Mrs. McGibbon, promotes the study of classical culture. A national organization, the l.C.L.'s activi- ties included a formal induction and participation by invitation in a Roman banquet at Bladensburg. The ofiicers of the club were Janice Bennett, president: Carol Fedak, vice-president, Mary Halstead, secre- taryg and Bera Arnn, treasurer. -ln -., hun- gi 4 1 . 15--ta' I if Mr. Gruber, points out interesting specimens to his Tri Beta biology club. D. E. Course Helps To Produce Good Drivers To encourage good driving and safe- ty habits, the driver training class was held for the sophomores who were fif- teen years of age or older. The program, instructed by Mr. Vin- cent Ford, allowed each student to drive at least one hour a week and to spend one hour in the classroom. To pass the course, the sophomores were required to prove that they could exhibit a proper attitude toward the car as well as the necessary ability to maneuver it. Driver training has its difficulties! Mr. Ford gives pointers, and Carolina Agnolutto looks puzzled. ofrh -mgggmz . W i ,, .
