Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1974 volume:

141 , Suffolk University Boston, Massachusetts Throughout the years at Suffolk Uni- versity each graduating senior has de- termined for himself what Suffolk has been for him. Each has seen changes not only within the University but also within themselves. The staff of the Beacon would like to congratulate those seniors, and hope that this book will be a reflection of their senior year which they can look back on with happiness. g 16 Our schools, if they do their work, strengthen our deliberate and deliberative selves. Between the impression and the conviction, between the impulse and the action, we learn to pause and consider. — Joseph Tussman Administration Four years ago, I entered Suffolk University as President, along with the members of this year ' s graduating class. I am sure that we suffered with some mutuality the disquiet of the day and apprehension for the future. Four academic years have now passed. The problems have not dis- appeared, nor have all our fears been allayed. We have both matured in our ability to appraise what is important and what is not important, to decide who are the true prophets and who are the false prophets. We have not learned everything, but one concept has developed in our time — the concept of lifetime learning. Education is no longer confined to four years, or five years, but is a lifetime endeavor and pursuit, which will expand the one faculty which we all possess, which is incapable of over-expansion — our ability to learn. With this knowledge, we go on our way, commencing not finishing, to a fulfillment which we hope will be satisfying, rewarding, and beneficial to each other. Thomas A. Fulham President Dean Joseph H. Strain Suffolk University Beacon Hill Boston, Mass. 02114 (617) 723-4700 Dean of Students for the Colleges June 21, 1974 TO THE CLASS OF 1974: In keeping with your Yearbook theme The Way We Were , I remember the way you were when you entered Suffolk University as freshmen in 1970 and as transfers during the following years. You were filled with friendliness, not hostility, you were filled with confidence, not unsureness and you were filled with eagerness not dullness or boredom. As the years have gone by, these qualities of the Class of 1974 have strengthened and have developed into a solid determination to enter and confront a world society perplexed by a multitude of problems, hazards and puzzles . sense of reality and the wisdom to overcome these obstacles and to venture forth with confidence and success. FARLEY LEAVE SUFFOLK Yearbooks tend primarily to serve students as remind- ers of the hopefully happy moments they experienced with others as they moved on their way to graduation. For that, yearbooks are primarily about students and not teachers. It would be particularly difficult, however, not to mention some few words about professors of history, Norman B. Floyd and Charles H. Farley, both leaving Suffolk University May, 1974 after many years of dis- tinguished service. Professor Floyd leaves Suffolk after twenty-seven years of service, many of those years as History Department Chairman, while Professor Farley leaves after seventeen years service. Suffolk University will be much the poorer with the loss of these two fine gentlemen. Both were dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in education and helped to spur on their students to notable achievements. Suffolk will miss Professors Floyd and Farley not only because they are men of ability and cared for their students, but also because they are men of integrity and character. It can only be hoped that their successors will be worthy of the respect that both these men commanded from students and colleagues alike. The obligation of any yearbook is to recapture mo- ments and events during our senior year so that we might have a pictorial reminder in the future years. We have tried to weave into the book the theme that we had chosen- The Way We Were. In the 1974 Beacon are not only pictures taken from all the events but a flavor of the times in which we went to school in. Through much effort and co-operation came the 1974 Beacon. We would like to thank some very special people who made it all possible. Tom Boyle, Mark Foster, Fred Chase and Joan Tamagini helped out in the photography aspect. Pam Strassen gave us help in the fine art of typing. Jim Petersen, Dean Sullivan and Lou Connelly opened up their files for us and contributed their time as well. Lastly, we would like to thank Joe Donovan of Kelleher Publishing and Purdy ' s Studios. We sincerely hope that you enjoy this yearbook. Jane Van Danich Fred Nazzaro Co-editors 137 JUNIOR-SENIOR WEEK White Cliffs, Plymouth Casino Boat Trip and Woodman ' s, Essex Commencement Ball-Lombardo ' s, Boston The Honorable Judge John Fenton Outstanding Administrator Award Judge Fenton was the recipient of the Outstanding Administrator Award presented by the Senior Class. Outstanding does not do justice to the type of devotion that Judge Fenton had for this University. He served in many capacities within the University. He was President of the University and twice the Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Much of his energies were directed to the enlargement of the student population as well as the facilities itself. Because of his stature among the leading law makers and politicians around the country, we were fortunate in having many of them speak at Suffolk. The Suffolk community will greatly miss the passing of the Judge. Graduation June 9, 1974 159 164 If we had the chance to do it over Would we? - The Way We Were 165 AY PAPER PRODUCTS, inc. HOWARD J.
