Text from Pages 1 - 210 of the 1967 volume:

T ft (o) 4 e o the following pages are dedicated to those individ- uals who are a part of ev- erything and everyone, yet stand apart with distinc- tion; to those individuals who can respond to the rapture and ruggedness of life, yet are responsible to its commitments; to those individuals who will always remain individual in their practices ... in their per- ceptions ... in their pur- suits. Jh a society where the common philosophy is self- fulfillment by the gratification of self-centered desires, where international discord breeds ugly pettiness and hatred, it is extraordinary to meet one whose self- fulfillment is carried through by the fulfillment of others. Zhe year 1967 marks the close of two decades of devoted teaching to the students of Suffolk University by Dr. Ella Murphy, Professor of English. J rare and generous educator, Dr. Murphy has guided many students onto a successful path in life. With her patience and understanding, with her wisdom and sincere warmth of friendship, she is a truly great human being. She is one of the few who cared enough to care. Jt is to express our sincere appreciation for her dedication to Suffolk University that we, the Class of 1967, dedicate our yearbook to Dr. Murphy with heartfelt hope that she continues teaching for many more years to come. karen spaneas alexander harvey kevin mcmahon editor associate editors glen parker jr. editor w. michael tysver business manager carolyn atwood richard rubin editors phil bailey bob morey maureen parsons mark craven Florence Petherick Advisor to Women John V. The ceremonies, attended by such noted dignitaries as Richard Cardinal Cushing, Speak- er of the House John W. McCormack, Mayor John F. Col- lins, General James J. McCormack, and Governor John A. Volpe, were realized after four years of slow but progres- sive development. Now we are part of a truly vibrant intellectual institution. To quote Suffolk Journal Editor Robert Reynolds, Suffolk University is only on the brink of tomorrow. It, too, must be carried across the threshold never again allowing itself to stand in the shadows to watch the present pass it by. Anything which does not ring true to change has to be anath- ema to Suffolk from this time forward . We have not been disappointed. SUFFOLK VS PROVIDENCE 6 6 9 9 . . . . MY-3-.ANGELS.. . You have been fortunate to have witnessed and been a part of the great transformation of the physical facilities of the University and to have become educationally enriched by the principal and sustaining recourse of Suf- folk University, its faculty. The goal of your University today, as always, is to train, inspire, and give to the world men and women of understanding; men and women with a thirst for truth and a passion for excellence, imbued with a knowledge of and the ability for the qualities of intellectual and moral leadership needed for the times which each generation must serve. We, at Suffolk, feel that you are equipped to enter and take your rightful place in the society of educated men and women. However, you should not regard your education as complete. Education of the mind and spirit of man is a life- long pursuit and a neverending process. Therefore, you must constantly keep refreshing your acquired knowledge in the fields in which you earn your living, particularly as it will embrace new concepts, new attitudes and new techniques. In all that you undertake, never be satisfied with mediocrity in purpose or achievement. Always have a regard for excellence, a sense of dedication and a commitment to perfection. As alumni, be active and enthusiastic in support of all of the worthwhile programs offered by your University. I commend and congratulate you; wish you every joy and happiness, and sin- cerely hope you attain great success in the future. John E. I would like to especially thank those individuals who cared enough to put that little extra to make this yearbook a living memory of the Class of 1967. I extend my thanks to Mr. Virgil Spencer for being my guide and informer at the American Yearbook plant in Maryland, and to Mark for his layout schemes without which I would have had a lopsided yearbook. Thank you Mary Hefron and Mary Hall for your time and concern. And to you Dick Weir, American Yearbook repre- sentative, for being patient, courteous and always there if I needed you. I am sure you have never seen a yearbook put together like this one! To my artists. Carolyn Atwood and Dick Rubin, I appreciate the extra effort and earnestness you poured into your projects. To Maureen Parsons and Mark Craven for being there when I really needed someone. You, too. Bob Morey and Phil Bailey for those great pic- tures. Without your insight and imagination my theme would not have been realized. Now for those special two whom I can never repay in words for their loyalty, perse- verance and ingenuity throughout the entire life of the BEACON. With tears and smiles I sincerely thank you Michael Tysver for bailing me out when I was up tight for a business manager. You rolled up your sleeves without a second ' s hesi- tation and worked wonders in the limited time you were given. And to you Irene Spaneas, my little sis. You were the only one I could bully and get away with it. Thank you for your painstaking effort and saint-like patience in trying to make the drawings exactly as I wanted them. In the wee, wee hours your light was still burning to complete that wondrous psychedelic ram and divider page. Finally, I want to express my deep gratitude to Suffolk University for affording me the opportunity to express myself and my university in a living picture book of mem- ories. Because of this responsibility I have learned much about my generation and my small world. I read into another chapter in the infinite book of human beings and human relationships. I learned with frowns and smiles, with pain and joy. And through it all I have come to look for and respect one quality in people, one quality that was not always expressed or was not always sincere and genuine. That quality is individuality, to any degree, be it acceptable or not today, for tomorrow most likely it will be. Each of us has this jeweled quality, but how often is it surpressed or adulterated. Imagine how many more people might become outstanding except for the fear of being different. I do not mean individuality without purpose, direction, responsibility and honesty. Cast an embracing glance over man ' s history and seek out those who have been truly great, within and without, publicly and privately, and you will behold true individuals. And some of them did not need to leave the group to express themselves. One can be an individual and still be a part of the group . . . NOT (continued from page 177) BACHELOR OF ARTS (cont.)
