An institution affording opportunity to those who knock The annual Commencement ceremony serves to prove the validity of Shakespeare ' s statement, Parting is such sweet sorrow . Commencement represents, at one and the same time, the pleasure and personal satisfaction derived from the culmina- tion of four years of college work. The class with which one has lived and studied has ended physi- cally. Yet, it will continue in spirit as a result of ex- periences and personal relationships which have de- veloped. These leave lasting impressions on the personalities of each individual to be carried throughout life.

A constant test of one ' s knowledge To the student they are the moment of truth; the difference between a college career or a trudge to the local employment office. Thus they are one collective ogre — a haunting spectre — which must be faced and strug- gled with. To the professor they mean a lot of hard work combined with the as- sumption of a responsibility to decide whether an individual will remain or depart. To parents, husbands, wives, and sweethearts they mean periods of short tempers, little sleep and much anxiety. What are they? They are exams, a distasteful but necessary measure of what the student has done in a course.
