Text from Pages 1 - 208 of the 1966 volume:

Easily accessible for all modes of travel . . . Each school is unique in some way. Suffolk ' s unique- ness lies in its ability to draw students from many walks of life, from hundreds of communities throughout the Commonwealth, nation and world, under the simple but cohesive title of Student. A basic factor in achieving this unity is the daily mode of transportation which Suffolk students use to arrive at school. Summer was over and students began the painful, but necessary exodus from North, South, East and West to the academic world of Suffolk University. One could tell that autumn was approaching for the Blue and Gold of the Suffolk beanies served as a preview of the reds, browns, golds and greens of falling leaves. On Regis- tration Day the sun reflected off the tanned, beaming faces of old acquaint- ances coming together once more to begin a new year. There was wonder, anxiety and a sense of expectation mirrored in the faces of incoming Freshmen. It is in the library that the student is confronted with those hard bound trans- mitters of knowledge. For the student the library is a living friend, a taskmaster and refuge center in which he can search through the world of reality and theory. In the classroom, another transmitter — the professor — exchanges knowledge and theory with the student. Should the student desire clarification of an issue, dis- cussion of his marks or a personal problem, he goes to one of the busiest places in the school — the Faculty Room. Provides facilities for exchanging ideas and opinions A place to relax, Goof-off and sway from the norm 8 Compaq The corridors, which tunnel through the University, shuttle the student from one class to another. They serve as a meeting and leaning place after a long and weary day. The corridors also serve as a means of access to the lounges and cafeteria, as well as the great outdoors — Condas, the Cham- bers and other spots on the Hill. ' Although every room in Suffolk is of prime importance, there is one small room on the fourth floor with a never-ending bustle of ac- tivity. Room 40 is well known to all students. Here in this nerve center are gathered the threads of all student activities as well as the people who plan, communicate and work on various projects. From this center the Student Government, Journal and Beacon begin their year channelling major student activities and interests. Beacon Hill, a long established center of cultural, political and social activities, provides Suffolk students and faculty members with an opportunity to broaden their scope of interest throughout the year. 12 The Evening Division has become more integrated with ihe Day School due to the de- termination and drive of an excellent staff of officers. They have started this process with the logical step of expanding their activities to heighten interest and participa- tion in extracurricular activities. The Evening Division Student Council has begun to coordinate their activities in conjunction with its Day Division counterpart in order to make the activities of the school more widely advertised and to encourage greater participation by all students, day and evening. ilf ' ljirir While knowledge and study should be the primary ob- jectives of a college education, the social life of the student also plays a vital part in the formation of his total personality. Through such activities as lectures, art exhibits, dances, parties, plays and variety shows, the student is given ample opportunity to develop his social poise and to form personal relationships. [6 m • f w 1 7 A constant test of one ' s knowledge To the student they are the moment of truth; the difference between a college career or a trudge to the local employment office. Thus they are one collective ogre — a haunting spectre — which must be faced and strug- gled with. To the professor they mean a lot of hard work combined with the as- sumption of a responsibility to decide whether an individual will remain or depart. To parents, husbands, wives, and sweethearts they mean periods of short tempers, little sleep and much anxiety. What are they? They are exams, a distasteful but necessary measure of what the student has done in a course. An institution affording opportunity to those who knock The annual Commencement ceremony serves to prove the validity of Shakespeare ' s statement, Parting is such sweet sorrow . Commencement represents, at one and the same time, the pleasure and personal satisfaction derived from the culmina- tion of four years of college work. The class with which one has lived and studied has ended physi- cally. Yet, it will continue in spirit as a result of ex- periences and personal relationships which have de- veloped. These leave lasting impressions on the personalities of each individual to be carried throughout life. Suffolk University 1966 BE A CON Beacon Staff Co -Editors M. Such a man was Hiram J, Archer — father, teacher, trustee, and friend. His impact is all the more re- markable by contrast with his modesty and humility. Born eighty-eight years ago on the Maine frontier, the son of a blacksmith, he worked as a lumberjack to earn money to attend Boston University and the Uni- versity of Maine, Upon graduation, he helped his brother Gleason found Suffolk Law School, taught law for fifty years, and has been continuously associated with the University until a month before his death on March 4, 1966, a period of sixty years. A devoted family man, he never tired of talking with pride of his children, grand- children, and wife. Others are proud of their fine houses and cars, but his wealth was his family,, He was characteristically kind and courteous, though quick to censure injustice or deviation from principle. In an age when people often seem more concerned with what they can get than with what they can give, it is pro- foundly sobering to know a man who asked so little and gave so much. His life was a sermon by example: when man works for love of others, the spirit of God moves in him,. His writing and speech were characterized by Yankee wit, frugality and in- cisiveness. He could say more in a sentence than most men can in a page. Although dedicated to the ideal of excellence in education, he also appreciated the worth of the average student. God bless the ' C student, he once said, He never turns into an educated fool. As a teacher of Constitutional Law, he had faith in the American democratic process, and taught not only an understanding of the Law but an appreciation of the values on which the Constitution is based. In an age when fundamental values are often deserted for the new or expedient, his life reminds us that personal fulfillment comes not through license but through duty. He accepted on faith the paradoxical nature of God ' s plan. He understood that the potential for good and evil exists in every man; that intelligence and education are not synonymous with honesty and integrity; that the logic of emotion is often stronger than the logic of reason; that men must live by principles yet achieve social goals through political accommodation. He recognized the limitations of man as well as his ability to transcend those limitations. This lean, erect man with the gentle voice prided himself on his physical fitness and longevity, which he attributed to healthy stock, hard work, and the will of God. Having survived tuberculosis in his youth and cancer in his maturity, the loss of a son in war and death of his wife, he knew that Through many tribu- lations we must enter the kingdom of God. Even in his eighty-eighth year he scorned the use of the elevator. Typically, he would pause beside a cluster of overweight students waiting for the elevator and, eyes twinkling, say to the heaviest, Young man, when you get to be my age, what condition do you think your heart will be in? Several years ago he invited me to his farm in Middleboro and with charact- eristic generosity sent me home with a carload of shrubs. The shoot of a crab apple tree on my front lawn is now fifteen feet tall. It has strange gnarled branches and thorny spikes. Clusters of golden nuggets defy the winter wind and snow so that hungry birds may eat. And now, as the buds prepare to burst, I am reminded that the tree, like the friend who gave it, gives comfort, beauty, strength. May the choir of angels receive you, and with Lazarus, who was once poor, may you have everlasting rest, Asst-Dean Joseph H. Strain 25 26 The President ' s Message As you. Graduates of the Class of 1966, take leave of Suffolk University, I com- mend and congratulate you upon having taken advantage of the fine educational opportunities offered by this University. It is my sincere wish that you will profit by the ideals and standards of excellence instilled in you by the Faculty. One of the real challenges to the college graduate today is to keep alive, after graduation, the intellectual enthusiasm, stimulation, and zest of college days. In this era of rapid advancement in specialized knowledge, you should understand that your education is largely a continuing personal matter, involving a total com- mitment to self-perfection and the fullest realization of your own individual po- tential during the remainder of your life. As you receive your degree, deservedly earned by years of difficult study and self- sacrifice, and take your place in the society of educated men and women, I urge you to live exemplary lives and, as alumni, to continue to remain loyal and stead- fast to the lofty purposes and objectives of Suffolk University so that your Uni- versity may continue to remain proud of you. Personally, and as President of Suffolk University, I heartily congratulate you on your achievements, and sincerely hope that you will enjoy many years of good health, good fortune, great happiness and continued successful accomplishment. 27 Administrative Officers Student Activities Florence Petherick Advisor to Women D. Karl Marx November To initiate the opening of our new Language Laboratory, the Modern Language Club, in as- sociation with the members of the Speech Department, spon- sored an open house and tea. Invited guests included mem- bers of the faculty of both Suffolk University and neigh- boring colleges, the consuls of Spain, France, and Ger- many, as well as students and alumni of Suffolk University. Although still in the experi- mental stage, the lab has proven to be indispensable in aiding in the study of foreign languages and speech. In future years, the Language Laboratory will prove to be of supreme value to every depart- ment of the University. December On December 5, 1965, Suffolk University had the distinguished honor of inaugurating as it ' s President, The Honorable John E. Fenton. Exercises were held at John Hancock Hall in Boston. Judge Fenton, former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Suffolk, is a graduate of Holy Cross, class of 1920, where he received his Bachelor of Arts. He was awarded his L.L.B. degree from Suffolk University. He is the holder of many honorary degrees and is extremely active in many philanthropic orga- nizations. Suffolk University is truly proud of it ' s capa- ble and honored new leader. 83 Christmas A-Go-Go January March Student-Faculty Art Exhibit The faculty, students and personnel of Suffolk experienced the rare privilege of viewing the art work of their collegues when the Humanities Club sponsored an art exhibit composed entirely of the works of fellow students and professors. The exhibit, which was held in the library, brought to the foreground the creativity and ar- tistic ability of those who are so closely associat- ed with our college life. 90 Probationary Chapter of Gamma Sigma Sigma Induction April May June 96 Junior- Senior Week Activities After having taken our last exams, we upperclassmen looked forward with great anticipation to the so- cial culmination of our school year, Junior-Senior Week. Activities included: The Book Burning Dance, All College Picnic at Harold Parker State Forest, the Junior-Senior Banquet at the New Ocean House, the Moonlight Cruise, A Night at the Pops fol- lowed by a party at the Boston Press Club, a beach party at Plum Island, and the festive Com- mencement Ball at the Hillview Country Club. The week surpassed our expectations. 97 101 Commencement Ball 102 After four long years of study and sacrifice, the day of triumph finally arrived. Com- mencement Exercises were held June 12, 1966 at the Back Bay Theatre in Boston. As each graduate rose to ac- cept his diploma, his heart swelled with pride at the thought of his personal achievement. 105 !l May We Introduce: Miss Suffolk University — 1966 Rose of Delta Sigma Pi Miss Bonnie Berman, ' 69 108 Queen of the Commencement Ball f Since 1963, Suffolk has been in the process of declaring a new image . . . expanding to keep up with the changing Boston. In order to facilitate our expansion program, all alumni, trustees, officers and students of Suffolk University have been diligently working toward a goal of three million dollars to pay for the New Suffolk University. Ex- pansion was necessary — funds were necessary — unity was ne- cessary. All were achieved to pro- vide Suffolk with the most mod- ern utilities to better educate its present and future students. Since the class of 1963 gradu- ated, much has materialized — the physical New Suffolk Uni- versity. The graduating Class of 1966, although envious of the new facilities, looks on with great pride in the part it had in making Suffolk University a stronger institution in the aca- demic world. ' I think you have the wrong impression . . . 139 Class of 1966 - Faculty Advisor Class Advisor ' s Message — 1966 Congratulations to the Class of 1966 for the way in which you have participated in the effort to move Suffolk University forward with a new vitality. A few short years ago when you entered this University you found only the hope of a modern- ized educational facility; today, you see the reality of it. The lessons you have learned during the years you have spent at Suffolk have ex- tended beyond the classroom. The realization of accomplishment is yours when you look upon the new building that is to open in the fall You have experienced, first hand, what it takes in the way of cooperation to accomplish such goals. You have worked for that which you will not be able to enjoy first hand. Yours is the last class to be taught solely within the traditional facilities of Suffolk Uni- versity. As Suffolk University reaches the 60th year since its humble beginning as an evening school of Law, much in the way of tradition has been changed by your Class. It was the officers of your Class that initiated and executed the change in the design of the college ring. The Class ring has been somewhat emblematical of a spirit of rebellion that has been in evidence within the student body. You have been rebellious without being incendiary; dissatisfied without being resentfull; and, in disagreement without being antagonistic. Yes, you have learned your lessons well; both in and out of the classroom. You may take satisfaction in the progress that you have made to date, but you must build upon this foundation that has been established here. For, as June 12th, 1966 is designated Commencement, this is only the beginning. Suffolk is proud of you and asks that you wear her degree well. 141 Frank George Achille, Jr. 233 Lincoln St., Hingham, Mass. We learned that we are responsible for ourselves and our ac- tions; we soon realized we must make our own decisions and cope with the results. Now we are graduates — The sum total of all the choices we have made — as Eleanor Roosevelt wisely wrote. So in the future weigh your decisions care- fully. Value your opportunities. Tackle each task as it comes your way. Think. Create. Be an individual. Free expression is the hope for our bold world. Speak out! Communicate! We can only preserve our freedom to make our beliefs known if we exercise that right. Best Wishes, 1966 BEACON Staff 200
