FOREWORD We live in a time of change; change so rapid as to leave naked contrasts evident in our daily life. Some we experience by wonder of a towering new Boston, rising up from the warm red bricks of history. Others are seen as the lecture transforms into a discussion over cold coffee. Yet most are felt; felt as the anxiety of mid-semester and final exams wanes into the relaxa- tion of Chianti and guitar . All these are experiences never to be lost . Suffolk is part of this change, and throughout this treasury of recorded experiences, resulting contrasts will be brought forth in an attempt to show the happy and the sad, the serious and the silly, and the friends we found in a life, a good life, that we shall all miss. 2 CONTENTS Introduction . Elizabeth Betsy Richards, an attractive Sophomore, was crowned queen by Mr. D. Bradley Sullivan and reigning queen, Miss Cynthia Dibble . Members of the court were Eileen Vangel, Joanna Colletto, Linda Stevens, and Susan Linden . 15 FACULTY 17 DEDICA TION Dr. Robert S. Friedman Dr. Robert S. Friedman, Chairman of the Biology Department, is about to commence his twenty- fifth year as a member of the faculty of Suffolk University. This represents the longest term of ser- vice of any faculty member of the College Departments of the University. Dr. Friedman ' s service has been more than ordinary. Not only has he devoted time and effort to the development of the Biology Department but he has given unsparingly of his many resources on behalf of students and alumni alike. He is truly loved and admired by the many students who have known him as a professor and advisor. His most recent years of service have not been without some sacrifice to his family as well as himself. Although business responsibilities have put heavy demands upon him, teaching has been his life and has always received the highest priority. We of the graduating class of 1965 wish to acknowledge his devotion to our alma mater and wish him well at our time of commencement as he approaches the next twenty-five years with Suffolk Uni- versity. 18 EXPRESSIONS OF 21 I win the bartender for the evening? Was that What hubcaps, officer? 22 I always pour punch in my hand. 23 2-1 I 26 Egypt Due to the diminishing size of our world, many universities are being visited by students from other lands . Suffolk is no exception. Here at Suffolk many strange and distant lands are repre- sented, such as Chelsea. Therefore, diplomatic courtesy compels us to show you this junk our Foreign Policy What a funny shape for an egg. Going, going gone. I should have taken 4 No Doz instead of 3 28 4 30 Room 40 is to Suffolk what Central Control is to X.A.S.A. Here all school functions are launched and ultimately guided to a successful touchdown. In The Student Activities Room, teleprompters and electronic panel boards are replaced by a network of human components monitoring and plotting activity progress. 31 The New Suffolk Drama Club echoed the in- genius words of William Inge ' s PICNIC, to begin the drama year with success . Under the stylized direction of Nancy Newman Dolph, there was a polished touch of Emersonia. The starring roles of Hal Carter and Madge Owens, played by Tom Armstrong and Ruth Rydberg were a far, yet humble resemblance of William Holden and Kim Novak . The noted achievements of the Suffolk Players can only reflect a new and growing Suffolk Univer- sity. Laughter and tears Boos and cheers Piano by Sam Songs by Ham A straight -arrow hero . . A villain like Nero A Bent -Arrow Sneak . . . . A mother so weak A pure -hearted Virgin (She twittered and flitted) A long-legged Siren (Who was finally acquitted) A friend tried and true . . An old man so blue A saucy French Maid A cop on a raid Truman was tested Simon was bested But we all really know. . . Dirk stole the show 34 LOVE RIDES THE RAILS 35 Variety is the spice of life so the saying goes, and that ' s what this years show contained. From the exploits of a villian to the chanting of a Franciscan rabbi, combined with melodic voices and crazy antics of some of Suffolk ' s best, this years show proved to be the greatest yet. Due to the limitation of space, not all the acts are pictured within this section, but the BEACON would like to give special recognition to the Freshman girls who participated with a great amount of enthusiasm and we hope they will continue to do so. To the entire cast we would like to say thanks . Thanks for making this our best year . 36 37 39 MISS CAMPUS CHEST The cult of the bosom reigned supreme at this year ' s bust ' em up contest. Perhaps BAZOOM would be a better description, for the development displayed by one word, STUPENDOUS!! The spectrum ran from a hip grandmother to a battered barfly, a bouncy beatle, and a breezy bareback. Yes, it was a virtual sea of flowers with an oc- casional thorn here and there. Congratula- tions to this year ' s champ. She certainly had a lot going for her and proved there is some truth in the adage It ' s what ' s up front that counts. Asked what type of theatrical talent the new queen possessed, her manager replied, With a little help she c an sit up. Congratulations also to Raymond ' s Under- wear Department for supplying the support needed. rr As Our Predecessors Built the University with a Part of Themselves So Shall We. These words of Thomas Fullham, Co- Chairman of the fund raising committee in- spired the senior class under the able direction of Thomas McDonald, to raise a total of $22, 000 dollars from the graduating Class of 65. Each year Suffolk University recognizes deserv- ing students for their academic achievement, partic- ipation in student organizations and activities, and performance of everyday duties of students to the faculty and school. On this day, each receives a small token of appreciation of his achievement which are above his regular academic duties . This section is dedicated to these hard-working individuals . of Recognition 45 The world of the college student is a mixture of friends, study, and relaxation found in the shadow of final exams . Some apartments are temporary quarters where students exist until the academic year is over . How - ever, some apartments are living quarters where the main functions of college life are performed. Studying is done in a relaxed and casual manner, friendships are formed with neighbors and the art of living away from parental protection is learned and polished. If one stood in the streets of Beacon Hill, the recreational functions would be self-explanatory. Hallmarks Although Suffolk University is a small school in comparsion to its sister universities, it can boast of having such top alumni as Commissioner of Banks, John B. Hynes, and the mayor of the City of Boston, John Collins . Many notables accept invitations to speak at Suffolk because they believe in this institution ' s philosophy of educating the working man ' s child. This day, there- fore, becomes an important one in your life, joyful yet serious and solemn, that commits you to duties and relationships that will endure to the end of your life. This day, therefore, is the beginning of a new life in which you will achieve new stature, will judge yourself by new standards, and in many cases will dedicate your talents to new ends or objectives. To be a graduate of Suffolk University carries with it not only great prestige but also solemn obligations with respect to your speech, thought, conduct, and purpose in life. It commits you to a loyalty to this University because from this day on Suffolk is publicly identified with you and you with Suffolk. This University will be judged by you and will be praised or blamed by what you do . This is true because the granting of a degree to you is formal recognition that this fine school has given you its name, has linked its future with yours, and has conferred on you a privilege and honor that I know will prove to be among your dearest possessions. The early part of the evening was devoted to sumptuous dining followed by the presentation of a well-deserved gift to the President of the Class of 1965, Tom MacDonald . Well nour- ished and exhibiting a twinge of nostalgia, Society then adjourned to the dance floor and the cocktail lounge. It concluded on Thursday evening with gowns, dinner jackets, scotch and soda, and Manhattans . The 1965 prom was a fitting climax to a week we will long remember.
