A honey-blonde sophomore, Miss Cinthia Dib- ble, was crowned queen by Mr. D. Bradley Sullivan, Dean of Admissions. The twenty year old coed, escorted by John McLellan, was also chosen Delta Sigma Phi ' s ROSE. DEDICA TION From 1948 when he came to Suffolk as Chairman of the Modern Language De- partment until his retirement in 1963, Dr. McKee proved himself to be one of the finest professors ever to teach at Suffolk. After World War II when Suffolk experienced a period of increased enrollment, he displayed his dedication to teaching by instructing more than the normal amount of classes expected of a professor. As a result of his efforts, the Modern Language Department attained the position it enjoys today. It is for these reasons that the graduating class of 1964 wishes to pay tribute to a great scholar and teacher, Dr. George H. McKee. George H. McKee PREVIEWS 10 FOREWORD Since its discovery by the early settlers, Beacon Hill has attracted men of sensi- tivity and intelligence. For those who loved beauty the Hill offered a view of pictur- esque Boston Harbor where sailing ships were seen. Its convenience to central Boston attracted others to her . People destined to become famous in all walks of life either came to live on the Hill or at least to visit her. Such names as Howells, Thackery, Dickens, Alcott as well as Bulfinch, Copley, and Adams became an integral part of Beacon Hill ' s history. It has been written that Beacon Hill is where every alley has a legend and all stones are hal- lowed. It seems inevitable, that such a place so rich in creativity and learning should give birth to a university. Throughout this book will be found photographs of some of the landmarks which have made the Hill known to all men of culture . For the past few years we have been a part of the Hill. Now we are part of her his- tory. It is fitting, then, that the theme of this book is historical Beacon Hill. 12 THE PRESIDENTS MESS A GE May I extend to you, the graduates of the Class of 1964, my most sincere con- gratulations . Now that you are about to leave Suffolk, I have certain definite hopes for you. I hope that as a result of your studies here you are better qualified to take your place in the working community . I hope that the ideals and standards instilled in you by the Faculty will help you to make decisions that will be beneficial to your city, to your state, and to your nation . I hope that as a result of your participa- tion in school activities you will be better able to assume the civic responsibili- ties now so encumbent on all good citizens . Finally, I hope that the many good friends you have made at Suffolk will be a source of great strength and pleasure to you through the years . If my hopes for you are fulfilled, you may be sure that your efforts at Suffolk University have been justified and that your years ahead will be most fruitful . Sincerely, Dennis C. Haley, President 13 AD VISOR ' S MESS A GE To the members of the Class of 1964: We are in the midst of an era of transition, an era of stress and change. Now more than ever before in its history, our nation is in need of a well -trained, highly dedica- ted, and responsible leadership, one that will be capable of meeting the many challenges and of solving problems that face the nation today, yet never at the expense of the great American ideals . The members of the class of 1964 have been fortunate. They have received the bene- fits of a higher education which will permit them to take their places in various econom- ic activities and to become a part of that dedicated and responsible leadership in whose hands our country ' s future rests. It is with the utmost confidence that they will not shun their responsibilities or betray their trust that I extend to all my heartiest congratulations . Edward G. EDWARD J. BARRETT THE BEACON CHAMBERS Best Wishes To The Class of 1964 From PRESIDENT HALEY June 29, 1964 EDITORS ' NOTE The 64 BEACON is published with the hope of depicting Suffolk University and its population, academically, socially, and cultur- ally. To do this, it is impossible to strictly confine the book to the Senior Class. We attempted to keep with the trend of humor recent- ly introduced in this publication. It is our feeling that it makes sec- tions suchas the Faculty more meaningful and enjoyable, than would a simple listing. In breaking with tradition we had a collegiate size book, the use of duotone, as well as four color processes, a digni- fied cover, and a higher grade of paper stock. We would particularly like to thank Ruth Rydberg and Sandy Mc- Alister for their cooperation and countless hours of time. Of special note is Al Raymond ' s art work, which added depth and meaning to this year ' s BEACON. THE EDITORS Compliments Of KENNETH A.
