Suffolk University Library Boston, Mass. Presented by ... . J j ara Bursar July 18, i960 HE 1958 BEACON Suffolk draws FOREWORD It ' s a hectic hill to climb, this steep ascent to Graduation — one with all the worries, frustrations, and long hours of study. But just when you give up hope, the going is made easier by the various footholds en- countered along the way. And when at last, the summit is reached and the goal is in sight, the accomplish- ment will be even more satisfying when you realize that the hard work was very often offset by the good times. Then suddenly there you are — a graduate. Excelsior! HENRY SELVITELLA, JR. The many hours of planning and revising, of writing and rewriting, of adding and de- leting, are over. As we close these pages, we of The Beacon staff look back on the many months of work with relief that they have passed, mingled with the satisfaction of having set forth our best. If The Beacon of 1958 may be considered a good yearbook, it may also be considered a reflection of the Class which produced it. The Class should be indebted to Hank Selvitella, Gordin King, Gil Wolpe, Celia Letorney, Bob Chevoor, Tony Cocuzzo, Ron- nie Guidice, Bev Carlson and Louise Der- Marderossian, to mention but a few, whose long hours of patient work have brought The Beacon into reality. It should also be indebted to Professor Rand and Miss Dottie McNamara who ad- vised and moderated our course. Lastly, it should be indebted to the entire staff of giving freely of its time and effort in setting down this record of your college years. If, many years hence, when age has shaken those few, sad, last gray hairs, this Beacon has become another source of happy memory, our efforts in your behalf will have been repaid. I m m v.-V ADMINISTRATION and FACULTY FAREWELL TO THE SENIOR CLASS As in all well-regulated families, we, and you of the Suffolk Family, are about to part, breaking our formal ties, and so, we at Suffolk prayerfully but cheerily say farewell to you, the Seniors of 1958. Go forth with courage and confidence, because you are armed with the knowledge that you have been thoroughly screened and tested, for assignments, to your various chosen fields in the competitive world of economics, politics and religion. You will soon become Alumni of Suffolk University and in the years to come, you will bring a good measure of fame to your Alma Mater because you will have grown in sta- ture in your work-a-day, live-a-day world. With courage, understanding and distinction you have advanced to this Commencement time and are now ready to begin afresh more important work toward the ultimate goals of your lives. Farewell and fare-thee-well. Sara Ansin, Secretary to Nancy Pierce, Receptionist Placement Director L. to R.: Ellen Hurley, Patricia Brown, Jacqueline Alice Gaertner, Auffrey — Library Staff Secretary to President Kay Holland, Receptionist SENIOR CLASS HISTORY In September, 1954, the Senior Class of 1958 assembled for the very first time in a body in the Suffolk University Auditorium. We were now first year college or rather freshmen, as we preferred to be called. After the first few weeks of general disorder and confusion, we settled down to the routine of college life. John Donohoe was elected Presi- dent and Timothy Curtin, Vice-President of our class. Although we were soon engulfed in our studies we still had sufficient time to attend many of the pleasant socials. The highlight of the year, as far as we were con- cerned, was the Beanie Dance, sponsored by the Seniors in our honor. This dance typified the cordial spirit of the Suffolk family which has permeated within the walls since the founding of the University in 1906. After this very profitable freshman year, we were graduated to the sophomore class. After electing our class officers — President, James Lalime; Vice-President, Jordan Ring; Secretary, Celia Letorney; and Treasurer, Richard Walsh, we were established as an entity in the Universtiy — the Sophomore Class. Now we began to enter into the spirit of college life at Suffolk University. Besides our academic work, we actively participated in many other activities, such as Newman Club, Debating Club, Business Club and Drama Club. We also participated in the Suffolk sports program, namely, Baseball, Basketball, and Hockey. During this year, too, we enjoyed many pleasurable socials. The next step in our educational career began in September, 1956. At this time, we entered the University with the prestige of Upperclassmen Juniors. No longer confused and callow sophomores, we made much progress in both college work and extra- curricular activities. We soon elected our class officers — James Lalime, President; Henry Selvitella, Jr., Vice-President; Celia Letorney, Secretary, and Richard Walsh, Treasurer. The two outstanding events of the year were the successful dance at the Riverside Boat Club and the fine Drama Club presentation of Picnic. With our Junior Year completed, we em- barked upon the last lap on our collegiate journey — the Senior Year. The fulfillment of our educational dreams was now in view — college graduation. Under the leadership of Henry Selvitella, Jr., Robert Chevoor, Celia Letorney, and Anthony Cocuzzo, our class officers, we made splendid strides in every direction. This year, however, proved to be most eventful. Our regular academic work was supplemented by various outside activi- ties, such as the Senior Prom, Drama Club presentation, Business Club affairs, and two successful dances. Worthy of special men- tion was the election of 12 outstanding stu- dents at Suffolk University to the highly coveted Who ' s Who in American Colleges and Universities. As our Senior Year draws to a close, we view with mixed emotions the termination of these college days. We feel confident that the class of 1958, equipped with the training which it has received at Suffolk University, will make many useful contributions to the welfare of the nation, and of the world. DEANS MESSAGE DONALD W. GOODRICH Dean and Registrar To my friends, the Seniors of 1958 One of the happiest, yet at the same time one of the most regretful, of the privileges of your Dean is to wish you well upon your graduation. Perhaps some of you will remember having heard or read somewhere the old Roman words that combine greeting and goodbye, Ave atque vale, Hail and Farewell. Far away and antique as this phrase may appear, it is still full of warmth and dignity. It is in the same friendly spirit that I send you this message as you close your college career. You will carry with you from Suffolk a great variety of experiences. These will include not only skills, in knowledge of science and of our social, economic, political, and philosophical institutions, but the many friendships which will remain vivid and valued in the years ahead. All of these treasured results of your college days have, there is no doubt, matured and aided you to acquire a sure foundation upon which to build suc- cessful lives. To accomplish this is the whole purpose for which the interlocking college activities (curricular and extracurricular) have been arranged. You can face your future with confidence. And so I greet you and wish you well as you start your real adventure. DONALD W. GOODRICH, Dean College Departments 15 FACULTY ENGLISH First Row, to R.: Neilson C. Hannay, Dr. Ella M. THE UNIVERSITY The Suffolk University School of Law, the first unit of the Uni- versity, was established in Sep- tember, 1906, to pi ovide profes- sional training for ambitious young men and women who desire a professional caz-eer. In 1914 the school was chartered with degree- granting powers by the legislature of Massachusetts. Educational facilities have been expanded in the belief that train- ing in the liberal arts and sciences is an integral part of a balanced education. The College of Liberal Arts was founded in 1934, the Graduate School of Law in 1935, the College of Journalism in 1936, and the College of Business Ad- ministration in 1937. The various departments were incorporated by the Massachusetts Legislature in April, 1937. Located on historic Beacon Hill, by the State House, Suffolk Uni- versity provides excellent accom- modations for educational work. In the University building are the Executive and Administrative of- fices ; University Library ; class- rooms; completely equipped and modern laboratories for biology, chemistry, and physics University Auditorium ; Bookstore ; and ap- propriate lounges for students. 19 I I JOHN R.
