Back in early November the stage was set In hopes of cutting down the state basketball nets. Coach Young and his Raiders took to the floor Running, running, running for evermore. By the end of December they had made us proud At all the home games there was a spirited crowd. The Dominoes Classic was surely a hit With the running Raiders giving everyone a fit. Soon the district games were to begin Surry had a title to defend. But the regional championships Suffolk had not forgot Surry should have stayed in the parking lot. The Raiders had gotten some revenge and hoped to continue with a winning binge. From the beginning everyone knew That the Windsor Dukes had to be reckoned with too. No one knew which team was the best But Suffolk was ready to put Windsor to the test. Mother Nature put things on hold With a brutal winter cold. Soon the big day was to arrive To test the Duke and Raider five. At the end of four quarters the game was tied and at the end of the game the Raider fans cried. The Raiders were not to be denied the Dukes lost the second time they tried. A Tidewater District Champion had to be crowned with Surry’s help Suffolk was that town. The district tournament — oh what a blast The Raiders were district winners at last. Troy and Tony were named to the all district ten with Marcus making it again. With the regional tournament soon to begin Coach Young thought he had been done in. Northumberland was rated rather high but they were gone before they could say bye. Nandua was to be the next formidable foe Suffolk went by them like a northeasterly blow. So the Raiders and Dukes were at it again Unfortunately for Suffolk, Windsor would win. The new playoff system had been passed Suffolk was going to the state at last. Manassas Park was the team to beat And Suffolk knew that’s who they would meet. Busses and cars loaded with loyal fans headed for Harrisonburg with big plans. One group of boosters never arrived They sat for hours on a hillside. The Cougars were ranked number one For Suffolk to win they would have to run. From start to finish the game was a thriller but the Raiders were the giant killer. Next for the red and white was B. W. Carver To trim those trees Suffolk would need a barber. At the beginning Suffolk was in for a battle the Trojans fought like a herd of cattle. Bloodied and bruised Suffolk would win To meet Floyd County in the end. Now it is March and the stage is set Is Suffolk really a sure bet? WLPM is on the air Does Suffolk still have a prayer? The Buffaloes are as tall as beast Better for Suffolk to enjoy a feast. The game was as exciting as could be with the Buffaloes falling to their knees. Suffolk was not to be denied No matter how hard the Buffaloes tried. Floyd County knew that it was sunk When Marcus sank his backward dunk. The game was over and the Red Raiders won Now they had finished what they had begun. w. N. Hill, Sr. 4
