- A tradition continues .. . The Senior Class begins its walk down the front steps of the school on Senior Day. Suffolk High School 301 N. Saratoga Street Suffolk, Virginia 23434 Volume 66 School Enrollment — 429 W 1 Friends The register in the hall g a Back in early November the stage was set In hopes of cutting down the state basketball nets. Coach Young and his Raiders took to the floor Running, running, running for evermore. By the end of December they had made us proud At all the home games there was a spirited crowd. The Dominoes Classic was surely a hit With the running Raiders giving everyone a fit. Soon the district games were to begin Surry had a title to defend. But the regional championships Suffolk had not forgot Surry should have stayed in the parking lot. The Raiders had gotten some revenge and hoped to continue with a winning binge. From the beginning everyone knew That the Windsor Dukes had to be reckoned with too. No one knew which team was the best But Suffolk was ready to put Windsor to the test. Mother Nature put things on hold With a brutal winter cold. Soon the big day was to arrive To test the Duke and Raider five. At the end of four quarters the game was tied and at the end of the game the Raider fans cried. The Raiders were not to be denied the Dukes lost the second time they tried. A Tidewater District Champion had to be crowned with Surry’s help Suffolk was that town. The district tournament — oh what a blast The Raiders were district winners at last. Troy and Tony were named to the all district ten with Marcus making it again. With the regional tournament soon to begin Coach Young thought he had been done in. Northumberland was rated rather high but they were gone before they could say bye. Nandua was to be the next formidable foe Suffolk went by them like a northeasterly blow. So the Raiders and Dukes were at it again Unfortunately for Suffolk, Windsor would win. The new playoff system had been passed Suffolk was going to the state at last. Manassas Park was the team to beat And Suffolk knew that’s who they would meet. Busses and cars loaded with loyal fans headed for Harrisonburg with big plans. One group of boosters never arrived They sat for hours on a hillside. The Cougars were ranked number one For Suffolk to win they would have to run. From start to finish the game was a thriller but the Raiders were the giant killer. Next for the red and white was B. W. Carver To trim those trees Suffolk would need a barber. At the beginning Suffolk was in for a battle the Trojans fought like a herd of cattle. Bloodied and bruised Suffolk would win To meet Floyd County in the end. Now it is March and the stage is set Is Suffolk really a sure bet? WLPM is on the air Does Suffolk still have a prayer? The Buffaloes are as tall as beast Better for Suffolk to enjoy a feast. The game was as exciting as could be with the Buffaloes falling to their knees. Suffolk was not to be denied No matter how hard the Buffaloes tried. Floyd County knew that it was sunk When Marcus sank his backward dunk. The game was over and the Red Raiders won Now they had finished what they had begun. w. N. Settt i 0 7?tem Ue Do you remember when we first climbed the majestic steps of Suffolk High? It seems like only yesterday that we were lowly Freshmen — blind to the great traditions of the past and skeptical of the future. We were thrown into the hustle and bustle of high school life like small animals are throw n into the jungle to fend for themselves. The more we struggled, the closer we became. We overcame the obstacles of adolescence together. We are now stricken with a double standard — waiting anxiously for graduation, but also trying desperately to prolong our stay at S. H. S. Even though the shelter, guidance, and confidence that these walls have provided will be taken away, our memories w ill stay with us forever. These have been the best years of our lives and nothing will ever change them. As we look back, it is only natural to shed a tear or two. One phase of our lives is ending and another is beginning. It is time to say “Farewell and “Good Luck from the Class ol 1988. The underclass¬ men watch as the Seniors march, two by two, down the steps and wonder if they, too, will make the long march to the flagpole. Tears flow as the Seniors leave their chairs and the Juniors move to take their place as the incoming Senior class. As the transition takes place, other students realize that they, too, are one step closer to their Senior Day. — Laurie Robertson One of the favorite skits of the 1987 Senior Day featured basketball play¬ er, “King” Marcus Elam and his cheerleaders and body guards. 21 Gaduyon, Michelle Gambrell, LaShawn Class Secretary Gardner, Sharron Garland, Crystal Class President Gates, Kim Gray, Chanda Harvey, Dexter Harvey, Sherry Hedgepeth, Marcus Holland, Shannon Holley, Reginald Holmes, Patricia 22 Hopkins, Miriam Jackson, Rodney Johnson, Charles Johnson, Tracy Jones, Lenore Jones, Marvin Joynes, Angel King, Letitia Lassiter, Terrie Lawrence, Darryl Martin, Candice McCrea, Stacy 23 Midnight Masquerade Intrigue, mystery, fantasy — Prom night ' 87 was full of it. Dozens of prom-goers ran themselves ragged “primping and preparing for that special night. Feelings of disappoint¬ ment, excitement, and fear flooded the minds of all, but any jitters disappeared as Midnight Masquerade came alive. Some unexpected surprises added humor to the night. Who will ever forget the sagging crepe paper over the table of sweets or Coach Alston getting drenched as he tried to fix the punch fountain? And, of course, the climax of the evening occurred as Marcus Elam and Cassandra Collins were crowned King and Queen of the prom. — Crystal Garland Midnight Masquerade nostalgia A “Soul Train” dance line Lisa Smith and Deborah Pierce ,1 „ M i- Marcus Elam displays the latest dance. Kennedy, and John Yeates, the Raiders rebounded to win nine straight games and, in the process, capture their first Tidewater District title. The Raiders then made it through the Regional playoffs with decisive wins over Northumberland and Charles City. The Raiders then went to the State play¬ offs where they met Strasburg High on a rain soaked, mud covered field. Even though the Raiders were defeated they produced a landmark season. 72 Scoreboard Suffolk 6 Forest Glen 7 Suffolk 0 John F.
