Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1987 volume:

The Peanut 1987 Volume 65 Hi Guys! Here it is! The 1987 edition of The Peanut. Take the time to go through every inch of it for it contains a record of a very special school year. The Sports section contains pictures of the teams that represented our school throughout the year. This was the first year for our girls volley¬ ball team and we had three of our students (Cas¬ sandra, Krissy, and Lou Ellen) named to the All District team. The Faculty and Staff section pictures all of the teachers who have worked so hard to help us prepare for what waits for us in the world. Be sure to check out the page that contains candid pictures of the teachers! We have sections that contain pictures of life around the school. Clubs and organizations are pictured and there are candid pictures of most of the Seniors as well as their formal pictures. Did you wonder what was falling on the little man on the front cover? It ' s pieces of a Raider! As you go through the yearbook, see how we put the pieces together and you will find that being a Red Raider is more than attending classes. Yes, a true Red Raider is multi-dimensional. Enjoy your yearbook. Crystal Garland, Editor The Annual staff would like to thank Kevin Alston, Nancy Richey, Ed Young, and Kevin Beale for their help with the yearbook. We couldn ' t have done it without you! 2 ADMINISTRATION Michael ). Debranski Principal Frances L. I expected my Senior Prom to be perfect ' These were the words of discouragement uttered by Brenda Sal¬ mon. Expectations of anything less than a night of perfection just will not do. Ner¬ vousness and excitement fill the air as cou¬ ples, transformed into stars for one night, become the objects of camera bulbs and early gossip. Months of preparation are forgotten as tonight ' s stars are treated royally. Who will ever forget the floor show given by the Sophomores or the dance led by the Prom King and Queen? It is the end of hard work for some, the payment due to others. Prom night memories seem to lin¬ ger forever. One thing is for certain - It was a night full of FANTASY! President (Seated left to right) Sam Harris, Treasurer; Tonya Smith, Secretary; Curtis Parker, Vice-President. When you finally reach your Senior year, you tend to get a little sentimental. Suddenly, it ' s hard to believe that you were a Freshman just four years ago. You start to see how the years have flown by. Your battles with exams, classes, teachers, parents, and acne are finally going to pay off. Your fun days of secure high school life are now coming to a close. Our teachers have tried to prepare us for and warn us of life in the real world. It ' s sad to say that we will travel down different paths and drift apart. Each senior holds his or her own special memories of Suffolk High. Try to re¬ member that graduation is the beginning of a new phase in life, not just the end of one. Everything must have a begin¬ ning and an end and now it ' s the time for the Seniors of 1987 to say Farewell. You who have had many days brightened with smiles from Mr. Jones. Yes, Ju¬ niors, who have breezed through Mrs. Mac ' s class with great ease and have broken all boundaries of maturity. What is your payment for being so wonder¬ ful? — Feet decorated with corns from relentless effort to conquer fund raising goals. Of course, let ' s not forget our giving traffic cops something to do. Though this year is almost gone, We hope this memory will live on. To make it through each quiz and test. Study hard and do your best. You thought it ' d be easy and come out fine, But now that you ' ve seen it. It ' s more than just a rhyme. You tried to succeed To come out on top, but when this year was over, You knew you couldn ' t stop. Why does it seem as if we struggle each day just to approach today - Se¬ nior Day. There is an air of mixed emo¬ tions as we remember the past and corn- template the future. We have many steps yet to climb, but we will never for¬ get the steps that we have taken. The four years of our life that were spent at SHS helped to prepare us for what is ahead. Yes, we are leaving, but the Class of ' 86 will never be forgotten. Senior Day 86 WE PUT THE UMPH IN TRIUMPH The 1986-87 Red Raider football team ended another successful season in a rebuilding year. They finished 7-4 and were runner-up in the Tidewater District race. The season started with three AA games against crosstown rivals Forest Glen, John Yeates, and John F. Kennedy. They came out of these three games with a 1-2 record, with the one victory over Forest Glen. The Raiders were 5-0 in the district until they played Surry in the championship game at Surry. The Raiders made it to the Region I playoffs for the first time in school history, but were eliminated in the first round game. Offensive all-district selections were Al phonso Ellis, Ricky Brooks, Steve Parker. Defensive all-district selections were Warren Williams, Marcus Hedgepeth, and Curt Parker. Curt Parker was also selected for All State. Terry Jones rushed for 1000 yards during the season. 56 V-l-C-T-O-R-Y-! 59 PL - A - AY BALL! 61 STAR TRACK (left) james Riddick finishes the Long jump (left) Kevin Beale runs one leg of the Relay.
