He became interested in being an exchange student a couple of years ago. His sister and friends in Finland have been exchange students to the United States and en¬ joyed their stay here. So Kris decided to be an exchange student to the U.S.A. Kris enjoys the sandy beaches in America because their beaches are not as sandy there. One American custom Kris does not like is eating hamburgers everyday. He says Americans eat too many of them. Kris has made many new friends and has enjoyed his stay in Virginia. With two years of experience behind them and only one more year to go, the class of ' 85 ' proved to be just as spirited as always. During homecoming, even though their float, Tomahawk the Tigers came in third place, the juniors won a sweeping victory in both the spirit link and the cheering contests. All that spirit and hard work paid off, for in the end, the junior class was named Most Spirited. The mass confusion of ordering class rings soon ar¬ rived. After yanking rings from Seniors, asking exciting questions, and filling out complicated forms, the juniors crowded around the API office to ponder over their choice for the most awaited class ring. With the help of the sponsors, Mrs. Cavender, Mrs. Covington, Mrs. Reynolds, and Mr. Parker, money mak¬ ing projects were under way and proved to be quite suc¬ cessful. Money was desperately needed for the prom, and peddlers could easily be identified as Juniors. Selling peanuts at home games, as well as concessions, candy sales, car washes, and jewelry sales were only a few of the projects contributed to the success of the prom. The class officers for 1983-84 were president, Crier Stotlar; vice-president, Melvin jackson; secretary, Melissa Holland; and treasurer, Wyndie Cobb ! « ) 10 Tawana Allen Melvin Artis Marcia Artis Kenny Baker Franklin Barnes Darryl Barrett Michael Beale Alphonso Boone Sheryl Boone Marcella Britt Catherine Byrum lames Clemonts Wyndie Cobb Sandra Cokes Tracey Colander Lisa Collins Beverly Copeland lohnnetta Council Lynn Cowan Dennis DeBause Rodney Dirton Robin Duke Marvin Dunn Tracey Edwards Cynthia Faucett 11 Lynn Futrell Carla Gautier jeanette Goodwyn Bobby Hardy Rae Haton Deborah Hayer Sherman Holly Bridgette Horton Melissa Holland Melvin jackson Bill Jenkins Paula Johnson Melvin Jones Alton King Tommy Long Renee McDonald Kim Mitchell Marlene Mosley Calvin Myrick Linda Odom Erika Parker Sara Parker Micheal Pope Sheila Porter William Powell Michelle Raimondi Karen Sadler Greta Scott Charles Sizemore Elizabeth Stapleton 12 Karen Stewart Grier Stotlar Rafael Urio George Vacalis Walter Vann Tabitha Ward Theresa Ward Tess Ward Sheila Warren Doug Weaver Crystal White Luther White Cynthia Whitehead Hersey Wright Beverly Williams What an Exchange! My name is Rafael Urio Rodriguez. Since I was a little child, I wanted to travel and visit foreign countries. I have been very lucky, because I have been able to visit several countries: Spain, France, Por¬ tugal, England, Ireland, North Africa and the United States. A year and a half ago, my father talked to me about going to the USA with a foreign exchange program and I thought the idea was great. My mother didn ' t like it at all. But here I am visiting the United States and I ' m only 17 years old. I think this experience is great. I like Suf¬ folk High School very much and all the people of the city. When I go back to Madrid, I am going to miss all my new friends very much. Many peo¬ ple think an exchange program is a difficult experience. But for me, it hasn ' t been hard because I have adapted to the American ways of living very well. (I still don ' t like ham¬ burgers.) It is going to be ex¬ tremely hard when I will have to say goodbye to SHS and my friends. I am very pleased and happy with the people who have given me their friendship and their help during my stay. I want to say to the teachers, the students, and my friends... Thank You For Everything 13 Jacqueline Almond It Does Get Easier As the spirited Sophomores proved, High School life does get easier and even more fun. This enthusiastic class proved their spirit during Homecoming week by continuing their first place win their float Hols that Tiger. The sophomores also have a large Faye Arrington representation on the cheering squads boosting school spirit at the games. The sophomores had to take the math competency tests and some took the PSAT ' s. So as the adjustments to high school life gets easier the work does get harder. These students showed up for the orientation assembly, where they were introduced to the school and staff. Mr. Hill and Mr. Jones familiarized new students with the school rules and regulations, as well as what to from the new school year. Mrs. Alwood also welcomed the new students to Suffolk High and introduced peer facilitators who then showed them to their homeroom classes. Orientation day was a success although as always you could easily pick freshmen from the crowd on the first day of school. High school life is quite different, as the freshmen soon found out. There were a great many adjustments to be made. During homecoming week the freshmen got acquainted with flat beds, paints and napkins. Although their float Cage the Tigers ' ' came in fourth place they became more aware of what to do; and enjoyed Homecoming week just the same. The activities were new to them but they hung right in, and their school spirit has increased as the year progressed. As you can see, these freshmen are really enthusiastic about Health class. The hustle and bustle of SHS ' s slice of life continued with the traditional homecoming activities. Each day different activities were planned which resulted in a tremendous boost in the student morale. On Monday cheerleaders started making spirit links, which classes chained together and competed for the longest chain. On Friday during the Pep Rally the winner was announced. Although it was a tight race with the fighting seniors, the Juniors won with over 4,000 links. Also on Monday students dressed up for 50 ' s day, Tuesday was backwards day, Wednesday was weird day, and Thursday was Kiddie day. The bif day, Friday, students donned their red and white clothing in support of the team. The cheerleaders presented hilarious skits and helped cheer the team on to Victory. Their pleas for getting more spirit were answered when the gym began to rock. The Spirits juniors were announced the winners of the class cheering competition. Afernoons were spent rushing behind school to work on the traditional class floats. Many long hours of hard work were put into improving each classes “creation. There was no traditional homecoming parade this year, but nevertheless, the band class attendants, and the floats circled the field during pregame and halftime activities. The Sophomore float won first place with “Hold That Tiger, and the Seniors placing second with “Tame the Tigers. The Juniors came in third with Tomahawk the Tigers, and lastly the freshmen with “Cage the Tigers.
