Text from Pages 1 - 144 of the 1957 volume:

FOREWORD We present this yearbook with a great deal of pride and satisfaction. We think it only fitting that we honor our “peanut friends” because of the important part they play in all our lives. From them we get the title of our school paper, “The Peanut Picker,” and the annual, “The Peanut!” Notice that throughout the book they are taking part in all of the activities as you or I would. It’s with this thought that we present the 1957 edition of The Peanut. Tkb PMMJut 1957 CO-EDITORS: SUE BENTON PEARL BLAIR ■SUFFOLK, VIRGINL v kl !fi A r I i v v XjTK 1 A DediCiOttzoiv “Quisque dat optimum pro bono omnium.” This is truly Miss Virginia Brinkley’s personal motto as she has given her best to better and further the work of S. H. S. One of the students’ favorite teachers, Miss Brinkley has also worked endlessly on The Peanut as business sponsor for many years. She is known throughout the school for her wonderful sense of humor and outstanding teaching ability. We jointly dedicate the Thirty-fifth Volume of The Peanut to Miss Virginia Brinkley with a deep sense of gratitude for all she has done for us. Excellent teacher + dependability + keen wit + knowing smile + someone in whom you can confide + someone always “busy as a bee” = our one and only Mrs. Ann H. Burton, to whom we jointly dedi¬ cate the Thirty-fifth Volume of The Peanut. Having worked so hard and faithfully as Editorial Sponsor of The Peanut for so many years, she decided to “take a vacation.” The Annual Staff will always have a place in their hearts for such an outstanding person. BUSINESS OFFICE Notice here that Mr. H. B. Brockwell, Principal, points out to his secretary, Mrs. Fred S. Norfleet some new changes in student s schedules. Mr. Arthur E. Jones, Jr., Assistant Principal and Business Manager seems to be making some business arrangements for the Junior Class while Miss Mamie Basler, school treasurer, counts change left from the break. 7 MISS MAMIE BASLER Business Education MISS MARGUERITE BELL English, Guidance Director MR. This also means our home-room representatives come at eight thirty and are now “in conference” in the library. After the meeting, they will give the students a full report of their activities, their plans, and an idea of just what S.H.S. needs. Our Student Senate leaders this year are George Bird¬ song, president; Roberta Baker, vice-president; Sue Benton, secretary; and their adviser is Mr. Brockwell. Their fine leadership has proved the merits of our Student Senate. The Senate Officers make plans for the com¬ ing year.
