, ' K | Foreword We present this yearbook with a good deal of pride and satisfaction because it is the first to depict a complete school year at Suffolk High School. A supplement is to be issued during the summer which will cover spring sports and activities and the graduation festivities of the Class of 1955. The staff hopes that the new feature will prove generally popular and that all the subscribers will be pleased with this presentation of their story. The Peanut 1955 Suffolk High School Suffolk, Virginia Dedication MISS ANNA B. KOONTZ Bachelor of Science Degree Madison College Master ' s Degree in Education University of Virginia We present Miss Koontz in her favorite pose-a teacher who really loves to teach. Those of us who have been in her science classes hold an ever increasing regard for her particular brand of scholarship. By insisting on nothing short of the best she has helped us to meet with integrity every kind of demand laid on us by our school life. This is so typical of the year we just couldn ' t leave it out! Remember those glorious holidays on December 6th and January 19th when we deserted the 3R s for winter sports? Maybe you remcmbcr.too, how it felt to make up those days later on. Oh. well the weather doesn ' t help us much any more unless it does something really spectacular like Hazel or a blizzard. courtesy of joe foulkes! 50 Back row. lop to bottom: Richardson, Butler. BUT SHOTGUNITES MAKE BIGGEST NOISE FOR TITLE The Red Raiders “kicked off their 1954 season with an imposing 34-12 victory over group one Granby. The fire rapidly cooled oft, however, as we were beaten the next two games by Craddock and Norview. Churchland overwhelmed us 20-0 to take the District One, Group Two Championship. This marks the first time that a Church- land team has ever beaten the Raiders. We had a “fair to middling season with 5 victories. 4 defeats and 1 stalemate. Considering last years 15 graduating lettermcn and the loss of Alton Byrd, out at mid-season with a broken leg, we did as well as might have been expected. Earl Whitley awarded WLPM trophy for “most outstand¬ ing player by Earl Hundley. Suffolk boys named on the All Tidewater Group Two team: Alton Byrd, end; Boh Richardson, cen¬ ter: Bruce Griggs, tackle. Alton Byrd was also named on the All Foreman Field team. Captain Willard Andrews awarded the American Legion Trophy for being most outstanding senior. Looking on are Lawrence Oliver of Post 57 and Coach Eric Tipton of William Mary. James Allen Matthews honored with new Junior Chamber of Commerce Tro¬ phy for best sportsman. Tennis For the third straight season the Suffolk High tennis team dominated the District I Group 2 tournament held here each year. The finals in both singles and doubles were an all Raider affair. Bobby Turner, Suffolk’s No. 2 player, who has lost only two matches in three regular seasons, upset Ben Mitchell, his No. 1 team mate in the singles. 7-5. 2-6, 6-4, Mitchell won the Group 2 title for the past two years. Turner and Mitchell teamed together to win the doubles with straight set wins over two more Raiders—Ray Brown and Jay Frasier. The scores were 6-4, 6-4. Mitchell and Turner won the Group 2 State Meet with a score of 6-2, 6-0 over Harrisonburg. Of sixteen matches during the entire season only two were lost to Thomas Jefferson. The Suffolk High Track team finished fourth in a field of five in the District Group 2 meet held at Norfolk April 26th, but came up with the day’s top scorer in L. J. Small. Small scored 15 of the Raiders 31 points—placing first in the 100. 220 and shot put. Peter Neal placed first in the mile and Jimmie Taylor tied for first place in the high jump. In the State Group 2 Meet. Small captured first place in the 100 yard dash and second place in the 220. In the first annual Virginia-Pilot Relays the Raider team, composed of Sonny Hurt. William Kilby, L. J. Small, and Bobby Worable, Track finished second. From Row: Holladay, D. I ightner, B. Taylor, J. Shotton. C. Small, L. J. Womblc. B. Jubenville. D.
