■ THf P£flnUT Suffolk High School Suffolk, Virginia Volume XXXI Editor .Shirley Richardson Business Manager Diane Whitfield Presenting Miss Louise Lilly, secretary to the principal, office clerk, tvping teacher. These are some of her official titles, but they don’t begin to explain the real significance of the signature on the right. It may not appear on our diplomas, but what has that to do with the daily importance of having it on our excuses, permits, receipts, letters, and re¬ port cards? Because not anyone has served us all more willingly nor in more capacities, we affectionately dedicate to our Miss Lillv this thirtv-first volume of THE PEANUT. MR. ARTHUR E. SALMON ANN SAVEDCE LUCILLE RICE PEGGY SCREWS OUTSTfMDinG SEniORS JIMMY CROCKER The rare combination of brain plus brawn is found in our Student Senate president, Jimmy Crocker. Jimmy has been an officer in the senate for two years and a class officer earlier. His memberships included Hi-Y, Key Club, and Monogram Club. He has stood well in bis classes. Brains are not all, however. As a freshman be played JV football and then played three years on the varsity. His alertness and spirit of co¬ operation won for him the honor of serving as captain of the 1952 squad. Whenever the reputation of Suffolk High has been at stake, Jimmy’s industry, resourcefulness, and depend- abilitv have caused his fellow students to single him out to carry the colors. His Alma Mater will always be grateful for his many services. The five Seniors pictured on these pages were chosen front a class of fifty-one by the Seniors, themselves, each member naming two choices by secret ballot. They represent their classmates ' ideal of lead¬ ership, citizenship, scholarship, and personality. SUE WOODWARD We recognize in Sue, first and foremost, that brand of scholarship which we all salute. Studious—but never pedantic, she has set a challenging pace in our classrooms and helped us to see that integrity has its academic application. Para¬ doxically, perhaps, Sue is an accomplished musician, having won statewide acclaim with the flute. To round out the pic¬ ture let us mention the fact that Sue has represented her class three years in the Student Senate and has served as treasurer of the A.P.T.P. In spite of the heavy demand of her senior course she has cheerfully and willingly taken on one of the most exacting tasks connected with this yearbook—that of photograph editor. We know that Sue has set herself some mighty high goals and we’re equally sure that she will attain them. Our very best will go with her. DIANE WHITFIELD Diane Whitfield has been an active participant in scho¬ lastic activities as well as such extra-curricular projects as work on the annual staff, cheerleading, and forensics. Diane has been outstanding in dramatics, having had leading roles in three-act plays for three years. We look to Diane to supply the artistic touch whenever it is needed. She has a real flair for injecting color into her surroundings whether they be in class, decorating the gym, making posters, speaking in the American Legion Contest, cheering for a Suffolk team, or paying Peanut bills. Diane has done well scholastically and nas been in the top section of her class throughout school. NICK LAWYER Nick Lawyer’s name has long been a synonym for football. Consequently, not everyone is aware of his enviable record as a leader in other school activities. This year he has served as president of the Key Club and of the Goober Hi-Y and has edited the Peanut Picker. He has regularly been a member of the Student Senate where he has accomplished a great deal through committee work. Withal he has maintained a con¬ sistently good academic rating. Nick’s chief enthusiasm is undoubtedly football; he has been a valuable member of the varsity for four years and the recipient of an outstanding plavcr trophy this fall. He has been a track star, too, ana a JV basketball player. Nick seems to be able to take everything in his stride, except perhaps politics. The November elections upset him a bit, but we tninlc he’ll survive. SHIRLEY RICHARDSON Shirley’s honorary title should be Miss Secretary of 1953. No matter in what field of activity she engaged, and there have been many, she invariably assumed secretarial duties. We think this denotes versatility as well as dependability. Her talents have been particularly well demonstrated in dramatics with roles in both three-act and one-act plays and in music with her place as first clarinetist in the band. Somehow in spite of these foregoing activities she has found the time to serve as editor of this volume of the Peanut and to do a large share of class and student government work. Withal she has earned an enviable scholastic record. Her wide circle of friends is perhaps the best proof of her delightful personality. t r« BEST LOOKING Carolyn M unden Edwin Quimby MOST STUDIOUS Sue Woodward Irving January CRAZIEST Jo Teaney Wes Alexander SERIOR SUPERLATIVES BEST ALL ROUND Shirley Richardson Jimmy Crocker , MOST DEPENDABLE Sub Woodward Jesse Hancock BEST DISPOSITION Pat Briley Jimmy Crocker MOST ATHLETIC Florence King Nick Lawyer Carol Akers Evelyn Austin Shirley Babb Allie Gardner Baker June Baker Carolyn Bell Mary Alice Bell Anne Benton Billy Brett Rosalie Brinkley Willard Andrews President Ray Brown Janet Byrd Lin Call is Myrtle Carr Dorothy Cox David Crocker Meredith Crocker Betty Culpepper George Daniels Jeff Davenport Jim Deaton Ho Dodd Ann Dough tie Joyce Duke Catherine Earley SOPHOITlOfKS SOPHOHIOMS . FOOTBALL 1952 Nick Lawyer Jan Ellis MOST VALUABLE PLAYER SELECTED BY RED RAIDER TEAMMATES 1952 AWARDED BY WLPM To Merritt Draper We want to pay special tribute to Peggv Screws, the onlv chief majorette the Suffolk. High School Band has had since its organization. For five years Peggy has led the majorette crety with rare skill and grace. Her responsi¬ bilities have been heavy, but her accomplishments attest a maturity far beyond her years. When the last football game of 1952 had been played, the records showed that Peggv had conducted fifty-five halftime shows—not a single game missed in the last five seasons. The Red Raiders presented her a trophy in recognition of this remarkable achievement. In addition to conducting her own classes in tap, ballet, and acrobatic dancing, Peggy has become such a proficient baton twirler that she won last fall top place in the Dixiclander Majorette and Teenage Talent Show” for this area. She will thus be entitled to compete for the title, Miss Majorette of Dixie. She will always be Miss Majorette to the Red Raiders and to Suffolk High School. f) 111 0 R D S 72 There was just one reason whv the Red Raiders failed to chalk up another Undefeated Season. Better than half way through the schedule, a real epidemic of injuries hefell them. Several key mem hers of the squad including captain, halfback, quarterback, and an end made as mam trips to the emergency room as to the goal line. Others including an additional quarterback had to take to the bench because of less serious but equally stubborn hurts. Conse¬ quently, we thought it appropriate to picture below Room 217 at Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, “endowed” this season bv the foot¬ ball heroes of S.H.S. f 0 0 T B A L L Jimmy Crocker Captain of the Red Raiders Loyal Raider fans made it possible for the whole squad to see the Army Navy game in Philadelphia.
