His various roles as vice-principal, athletic director, friend, and confidant have shown us his outstanding qualities of leadership and com¬ passion. “Mr. C.” has helped us to blossom both as a class and as in¬ dividuals. And for that we are grateful. “Mr. C.”, we hope that our warmth and sincerity are relayed to you in this brief passage. Picture each of our smiling faces and hear the thunderous ap¬ plause with which we honor you. The class of 1985 wishes to express its deepest apprecia¬ tion to our class advisors, Ms. Robin Sorensen and Mr. Ed¬ ward Grous. Dot Hinckley, Alice Maiolo — Mgr.. Ann Hyjek, and Dot Halladay 42 Amiel P. Zak 1915-1984 Amiel Zak ... a modest, dedicated teacher and civic leader, selflessly devoted his energies to serving this community throughout his life. As a teacher at Suffield High, he chaired the Social Studies Department, acted as yearbook advisor, and was named an honorary member of our Delmar F. Sisson chapter of The National Honor Society. In addition to his scholarship and moral integrity, his quick, dry wit endeared him to countless students, colleagues, and friends. Proud of his heritage, faithful to his church, and decorated for defending his country, Mr. Zak meant something to each of those who knew him. He shall continue to be remembered fondly by those whose lives he touched. ‘Let me get this straight. You can only type 10 words a minute?! ' Tomorrow. Tomorrow. I love ya tomorrow . . . Our first project, ordering our class jackets, was a success, and we proudly displayed them when they arrived. We ex¬ citedly awaited the pep ral¬ ly, but our meager prepara¬ tions and “too-cool-to- cheer” attitudes brought us down to earth. We came in fourth, but chalked it up to inexperience — we would do better the next year. In the meantime, we got rides to McDonald’s with up¬ perclassmen, and cheered ourselves up with Quarter Pounders and French fries. We came back as confi¬ dent sophomores, glad to have the freshmen looking up to us for a change. We all commented on how short the freshmen seemed and how we never could have been that obnoxious when we were so young. Being a class to break tradition, we changed companies when it came time to order our rings. The change was for the better and when the rings arrived, we happily displayed them to anyone and everyone. Our junior year was the HISTORY real beginning for the class of 1985. We pulled together, exceeding our can¬ dy sale goals, as well as coming in second place in the pep rally. We eagerly awaited our junior prom and when it arrived, it lived up to our expectations. In our taffeta gowns and hand¬ some tuxedos, we danced the night away at La Renaissance to the song, “Heaven.” The next day we flocked to the beaches (despite the weather) so that the fun wouldn’t have to end. June came and the graduates went. It was up to us now — we would be the next senior class. Now it’s our turn! Our senior year started off powerfully with a successful magazine drive. We came together and showed the underclassmen what we could do. To celebrate our success, we held a semi- formal and indulged ourselves at Friendly’s. We spent hours at Frankie’s after the basketball games, eating pizza and grinders. Now, as graduates, we have found unity in our class. We are all individuals, but we have a common goal — the welfare of the class of 1985. 137 Jeff Alers J.V Baseball 1; Varsity Baseball 2, 3, 4; Freshman Basketball 1; Cross Country 3, 4 Wayne Andrews Musicals 1, 2, 3, 4; Track 1, 2, 3, 4; Indoor Track 2, 3, 4; Gymnastics 1, 2, 3; Co- Captain 4; Madrigals 1, 2, 3, 4; Chorus 3, 4; Tempest “Maria” Anastasia Varsity Cross-Country 1, 2. 3, 4, Captain 4, All State Band 2, 3, NCCC Band 1, 2. 3, 4, Regional Band 1, 2, 3, 4; Concert Band 1, 2, 3; Symphonic Band 4; Dance Band 3, 4. BIG CRUISE!! The S.H.S. Cheers, desig ned by MIKE GEMME, PAUL STAFFORD and interior decorator ED BIGDA, departed from Boston Harbor on December 26, 1999 for a New Year’s cruise to Australia. Travel agents NATALIE HALL and AMY MARKOWSKI had worked closely with TEDDY ROY, the captain of the cruise liner, in planning this trip. CINDY LEAVITT, cruise director, cheerfully greeted everyone as they boarded. The first aboard was the notorious gangster CHRIS WILLIAMS, surrounded by muscle-bound bodyguards ROB SOBINSKI, TED VARHOLAK, and JOHN VISCOMI. KELLY DRAKE and GINA MARTOCCHIO, taking an eagerly- awaited vacation from their jobs working with children, ran up the ramp. Next came Senator MARGO MCCARTY with her five St. Bernards, and her dogs’ veterinarian, MARSHA ANASTASIA. After an hour of boarding, the business women of the year: AUDREY KURAS, social worker; PAULA MANDEVILLE, advertising executive; and MIMI LAB- BEE, a business executive, all old high school friends, barely made it onto the boat. JODY HARBOLD and cabin mate HEATHER WATERMAN, housewives, prepared for their first night away from their husbands. In the adjoining cabin, PHIL BARRETT tried to sell his tools to computer repairman WAYNE LANCIONI. For the first dinner aboard the S.H.S. Cheers, beauticians JUDY HINCKLEY, SHARON MASON, KIM KOCHERT, and CATHY BLICKARZ were kept busy for many hours working in the ship’s salon. In the kitchen, nutritionist TONI REYNOLDS had been working hard planning the dinner, along with her staff. STACY WADENKLEE and DEREK PIERCE were seen carrying huge trays of food. At the first table they served were a few Suffield Garden Club members: DENISE MEUNIER, MARCIA RADZIEWSKI, BECKY ROSS and GREG RAYNES. After dinner, busboys TODD ROSANSKY and ERIC SCHULTZ cleared the tables. BRENDA BAUMERT, head chef, and her close associate, ARA STEWART, caterer, began mingling with the crowd. For entertainment, the break dancing team of ED MARKOWSKI, RUSSELL SMITH, JOHN MERRILL and VICTOR NIGRO captiviated the audience. The crowd dispersed into the various other entertainment facilities provided on board. Soon after, everyone retired early, exhausted from all the excitement of the first day. The next day began with an aerobics class led by DAVE SULLIVAN and BOB MANDIROLA Accountants JEFF ALERS, TRACEY BENOIT, NEAL CONDON, STEPHANIE HUOT, MILLIE CHRISTIAN, and KIM CALDON were in the first session of aerobics that morning, taking time out from their stressful jobs to loosen up. Doing one-hundred vigorous laps in the pool were the members of the awesome American Water Polo Team. The members included: LORI AUTORINO, MICHELLE CHARBONNEAU, TINA CLIFFORD, EDWARD COOK PAUL CYR. CINDY HEFFLON, TOMMY HEYSE, JENNY JUSTICE and PHIL KELLY. They were soon joined by Britain’s formidable water polo team members — NICKY KOSMAN, JOE KUPAU, PAM KUSZAJ, BOB LAFLAMME, MATT LAFOND, AUDREY LATA and DIANNE LINGENFELTER. Watching the water polo competition was Hartford Whalers coach SUZANNE LINGENFELTER. Nearby, attorney MATT BROMSON could be seen lounging on deck, basking in the sun, while his legal assistant, LYNN KOLNSBERG worked diligently. On the upper deck was MICHELLE BULAT seeking the advice of WILLIAM FOTHERGILL, child psychologist. Meanwhile, in the background, her children, fondly known to the passengers as the “Dirty Half Dozen,” could be heard playing cowboys and Indians. On the other side of the deck, the Connecticut Shuffleboard Team members KIRSTEN LITTLE. SANDRA LONG, LISA LONGO, and DEIRDRE MAHONEY, were impressing passengers with their skills. As the week closed, the ship docked at Puerto Vallarte, Mexico, to pick up the class of 1985’s SPECIAL GUEST. MICHELLE MYERS, child therapist, CAMI ENGLER, psychologist, and GENNY CANNON, social worker, brought out all the books on child psychology in an added attempt to solve the mystery of the “Dirty Half Dozen.” At 7:00 P.M., New Year’s Eve, the SPECIAL GUEST boarded the S.H.S Cheers with her bodyguard. AMY LEACH. Following behind them were the husband and wife reporting team, STEPHANIE STONE and MARK GLUNT Soon after, photographers WENDY TAYLOR and MIKE RICHARD arrived. Business people boarded the ship en route to an Australian convention; among them were DIANE SEYMOUR and LISA SCHWALBACH, executives SANDRA REGAN, a company chairperson, CHARLENE BUCKLEY, a secretary and Senator TARA REMINGTON. Last to return to the ship was yearbook advisor, REGINA WYSOCKI, with her colorful pihata, bought on a carefree spree through the city in an attempt to forget her yearbook duties. As the horn signaled the departure from Mexico, bartender PAUL STAGG was serving exotic drinks. TIM SWEATLAND, a hotel manager, rejected one in favor of a frosty mug of brew In her gift shop SALLY GEARY was 170 PROPHECY liking t m % I i Jfcr ComSlu ryi the fertilities to bring in the New Year were JOHN DIELi on drum 3oHN LEAHAN, concert pianist accompanying MARK SULLIVAN and SHELLY CICERO, singing Auld Lang Syne jC A The music stopped as the SPECIAL GUEST came in she was complimented on her gown, designed by MICHELE DUVAL Businessman SCOTT MORRISON asked the SPECIAL GUEST to dance as the music started again. Now that SCO TT has broker the ice, everyone ' joined them JANET WOOD, legal secretary, looked over the shoulder of her dancing partner, stockbroker BRIAN YOUNG, and saw pediatrician TOM NAUGHTON, boogieing with KAREN WHITE, legal ssjstanf . JT The music sU.ppecL and touring comedian PETER MANN started the countdown for the new yeaY 10 9.8 ... 7 ... 6... 5 .. . 2 . CHASHH! The ship struck an uncharted island! ANN MARIE VIETS, ati accountant, hit her faeejon the rail and was rushed to dental hygienist CINDY TUPEK. Doc¬ tor GREG PACKARD and his nurse. KATHY WELSH, were seen aiding RAY YOUNG. Olympic basketball coach. In the morning ll passengers were asked t 9 leave the ship for safety’s sake while JAY CHRISTIAN, underwater welder, ERIC VALDES, PETER DAS and MARC EDWARDS, electrical engineers, worked diligently to repair the ship. Archaeologist LINDA MEIBERG dras eager to examine the island’s rocks, while veterinarian AMANDA LAWLER look¬ ed for animal inhabitants. Night fell! And the strange beat of a distant drum could be heard. In the morning when the passengers awoke, they discovered that CATHERINE COGGINS, pony trainer, MICHAEL BLANCHARD, famous soccer player, and MARY JENNINGS, gym teacher, were missing. jr Search parties were organized to find the missing people. F our were led by MICHAEL BUSSOLAR1, owner of a chain of auto repair shops, STEVE SLAMON, millionaire, STEVE CASSTEVENS, horticulturist and GREG STEWART, farmer. The day ended without success. As the passengers dozed off, the drum beat was much louder than it had been the night before. Later in the night the passengers were awakened by the drum that was closer and louder than earlier. The drum stopped and there was dead silence! All of a sudden 1,985 weird fuzzy creatures began to attack. Someone screamed, “Oh My God, they’re Weepies — and they’re alive!!!” There was no way to defeat these furry beasts. Then all of a sudden the Weepies ceased their attack. Out of the jungle twomer ppeared. One was wearing a crown, and the other was holding a drum. They identified themselves as President TED LYON of Weepies Island and his faithful bongo player, BILL NEALON. The president told us of the many grieving Weeple families that had lost relatives to the Suffield magazine sale. President LYON then asked for the SPECIAL GUEST as a sacrifice. The passengers refused to give her up but, against our wishes, the fearsome Weepies took her. As this happened, we heard helicopters in the distance. “Oh No, What Now!!!’’, we thought. But before the helicopters arrived, we started to negotiate with President LYON We agreed upon making a trade — the three miss¬ ing passengers and our SPECIAL GUEST for WAYNE ANDREWS, advertising consultant, SCOTT BOLL1GER, business manager, LISA GEBHART, business woman, business executive MIKE FABRIZI, sales representative DEB¬ BIE HICKEY, and MAIR1 LAFRANCE, another business manager. Amazingly, they were all willing to volunteer for this highly dangerous position, while visions of Weeple Inn World Renowned Resort flashed in their minds. Finally the helicopters arrived, just a little bit late for a rescue, yet nonetheless welcome. Flying the helicopters were BOBBY HARRIS. MIKE MIARECKi, and MIKE MURZYN From the sea came the Navy. First off the Navy boat was Lieutenant TIM CANNON All the passengers were checked for injuries by JEFF BOYD, emergency medical techni¬ cian, and two radiological technicians, CHARLENE HAWLEY and WENDY TERRY. Soon after, the passengers were escorted from Weepies Island. Our arrival in Boston was met with much fanfare. Passengers were greeted by reporters, relatives and colleagues. Returning from her work in South America, JENNIFER DELEEUW. who was helping Dr Jim Reardon, barely made it back for the ship’s return. In the crowd were rich and famous JOHN LIPSKI, DARLENE PHELPS, bookkeeper; BETH MASON, psychologist; BRIAN CASINGHINO, lawyer; BRIAN MANDIROLA, owner of a small business; ELLEN SEGER, Wall Street financier; DAN SHERIDAN, WALTER COLE, and LISA COATTI, all business executives. Though invited and eager to go, they couldn ' t find the time to take the cruise. So this concludes yet another zany and unique episode for the “Class of 1985,” wrote famous novelist KAREN SIMMONS. SPECIAL GUEST: The seniors at Suffield were honored to have our own special guest from Mexico, LARA LATA We enjoyed having her here with us and maybe we’ll see her again at our 15th reunion!!!
