1980 Sagitta Suffield High School Suffield, Connecticut Voices of the Present . ii Graduates . 10 Faculty and Administration . 48 Activities, Community Involvement . .74 Underclassmen . 90 Athletics . 104 Seniors in Action . 140 Community Support . 188 Voices Yet to be Heard . viii Like wisdom ' s lamp and triumph s jubilation, let your light shine and your voice be heard. Within each person is a voice revealing Hush, take time to listen. There are those who care to and those who EglBB remain silent; Sigh with life’s sorrows, Whisper dreams of longing. Sing joys of the heart; Shout of a bright future! To Mrs. Margaret Corcoran ... a teacher with dignity ... an esteemed lady in the eyes of our entire school commu¬ nity ... whose poise, wisdom and char¬ acter inspire students and colleagues ... in love, respect and gratitude for her tire¬ less efforts on our behalf, we dedicate the 1980 Sagitta. Let our voices sound in appreciation to Mrs. Rollet and Mr. Katulka for their devotion, inspiration, and vibrant spirit. With words of encouragement and reassurance, they have given us confidence to move forward with high expec¬ tations toward tomorrow. 9 GRADUA TES 10 ROBERT FRANCIS BAUCHIERO ERIC JOHN BENNETT LISA ROSE THECLA BAZYK 12 JOHN BELORIT RAYMOND G. CLASS HISTORY Although we stepped silently into our fresh¬ man year, we decided to come out of our shells early and let our voices be heard. Our spirit and our favorites began to emerge by the time our BLUE class jackets arrived. Through the year we danced happily to our favorite tunes from BILLY JOEL and LINDA RON- STADT and of course our favorite song, RENEGADE.” As freshmen we didn’t care if we came in third at the Pep-Rally; we knew we were working our way to the top. As “silly Sophomores” our cheerful grins carried us through the year. We HEIGHT¬ ENED our class spirit with the tradition of Class Rings (a bar of soap for swollen fingers), a class trip, donut sales, and the unforgettable Slave Day. Determined to prove to the entire school we were 1, we yelled our way to sec¬ ond place in the Pep-Rally. AND FA VORITES By September 1978 we had not just become Juniors, we were UPPERCLASSMEN. We made great use of this impressive title by suc¬ cessfully selling those delicious candy bars (followed by tons of Clearasil). In this most progressive year we not only participated but cheered both Varsity Soccer and Hockey teams to state championships, but we also pulled together as a class to prove we were the best when we captured our Pep-Rally victory. Our magical Jr. Prom theme “If,” led toward thoughts of our rapidly approaching Senior year. Our SUMMER dreams of riding around in a CORVETTE listening to BEACH BOYS songs had now disappeared. With the approach of fall, we had more realistic dreams to achieve. Among these were college acceptances and graduation. Somehow the once so important trips to MCDONALD’S and PIZZA lunches didn’t seem to phase us. We had a magazine sale to undertake, a yearbook to publish, and a Donkey Basketball game to play. As a class we cherished our vanishing moments of our Sen¬ ior Sno-Ball; If only we could hold “TIME IN A BOTTLE.” Before we knew it the good-byes had been said, yearbooks were signed, and with voices once more subdued, we anxiously awaited our first step into the world yet to be explored. CLASS The class of 1980 decides to hold their fifteenth class reunion in Suffield at the restaurant owned by KEITH BERTE. Suddenly, an unexpected blizzard cripples Suffield. The entire class, under the supervi¬ sion of Senator ROBERT PACKARD and his aide, MARCIA GEARY, volunteers its services during the emergency. Engineers JAY WATERMAN, AL KLESCZEWSKI, CHRISSY DILKO, JEFF MLINEK, STEVE NOR- CROSS, carpenter TROY VIETS, along with architects BILL HEYSE AND CATHIE PSHOLKA, plan to design igloos for the stranded motorists. Meanwhile, those who are marooned are being entertained in the barns of farmers LISA BAZYK and MARK KELLOGG. Singers LESLIE HARDIN and TERRY MAT- THEWS captivate the audience with their lovely voices while model TONETTE VAUGHT dazzles them with the latest fashions. There are some slow moments while presidential candidates LAURA SCHULTE, KATHY BENSON, and PETER GARDOCKI give their speeches, but the music of the MARCIA GEARY Trio, featuring JEAN ANASTASIA and the infamous trumpeter LEE TANGUAY, bring the audience back to life. Using kerosene lanterns, expert lighting technician STEVE MARKOWSKI, cleverly illuminates the darkened barns so that renowned dramatic artists, KATHY VARHOLAK, LINDA BRYCE, AND JEFF ELE- VELD (directed by DORTHY BRUYETTE) can perform a play based on the best selling novel, The Class of ’80, by LIZ LATHROP. Meanwhile, U.S. Air Force General, DOREEN KENNEDY and her squadron flies to the rescue as doctors HOLLY FITCH, MARIA FRANK, ROB MCCARTHY and BILL POWERS with nurses TAMMY MILLS and NANCY SIMMONS parachute to JOY FALKOWSKI’S sports shop and pick up skis on which they will reach needy survivors. Neighboring kennel owner KATHY MALEC, assisted by animal management expert MELANIE RUTZ, provides Alaskan huskies to pull toboggans of supplies driven by explorers DONNY LOWNDS and MARK SHERMAN, who are employed by travel agent JEFF DAVID. The medical group proceeds to the new YMCA where snowbound families are being sheltered. Pharma¬ cists JOE D’ALESSIO, and JENNIFER OSOWIECKI bring more drugs and equipment to the doctors. Vet¬ erinarian MISSY COPPOLO, assisted by LISA KNOX, stand by for emergency surgery on any hurt ani¬ mals. Awaiting medical treatment is secretary PAM FORD, who accidentally stabbed herself with a nail file when the lights went off. She wonders how she’ll explain the unfinished briefs to her bosses, attorneys BETH DAHMS and JEFF DOWD. Mafia leader LARRY TAVINO also wounded himself by slipping on a piece of ice by his limousine and causing the machine gun in the inner pocket of his pin-striped suit to misfire. As night draws near, social workers TERI CIRILLO, NANCY GARDOCKI, LORI MASLOSKI, and JEN¬ NIFER RINK gather blankets and bedding for those who will be spending the night at the shelter. In another part of the YMCA, gym teachers BLAKE GIBSON, and MIKE LENK, Spanish teacher SALLY HALL, elementary teacher LYNNE WOODRUFF, special ed. teachers DIANE DUGAS and KATHY PURDY, guidance counselor LINDA ZACAYNSKI, daycare center owners DIANE PRICE and JANET BINDER completely care for children separated from their parents. Criminologist MICHELE PARRY reads a Dick Tracy story to the children, while medical secretaries LYNDA KROGH and LISA BRODER try to PROPHECY locate parents thought to be trapped in business offices. LISA BRODER finally reaches SHAWN DAVIS by phone. Davis is now business administrator of the Leroux Corporation owned by KATHY LEROUX. He tells her that secretary, SUE PHILLIPS, and staff members EDGAR MORGANWECK and KEITH PURKIS are fine, but JAYCE EDWARDS is trapped in the basement with SUE BLANCHARD, along with plumber BOB PARNELL and welder STEVE NYSER. Back at the restaurant dietician KATHY MARTIN has helped arrange a buffet for the volunteers. At one table, psychologists MARTHA BROME, RON MCCLELLAND, medical technicians TERRY KULINA, JACKIE SAMSEL and DEBBIE MORIN and physical therapists GAIL BRACKETT, CARYN GOODWIN, and ROBIN HINCKLEY sit down after an exhausting morning. At another table geologist KEVIN CHASE, and astronomer DAVID SHINKEVICH listen intently as interior decorator GLORIA CHARLAND tells of her recent experiences decorating the mansion of world famous artist JON KLASE. As soon as dinner is over electrician STEVE STEWART lowers everyone’s spirits by announcing that the power will be out for some time. The unhappy sighs of computer programmers JOHN DALEY, MIKE LONGO and DIANE VAU¬ GHAN can be heard above the voices of accountants RON ANDREWS, CINDY GEBHART, JUANA PRUDE, BARB SCHILE, STAN ZYCMUNT, PAT WILESKY, and ELAINE RICHARDS as they argue over who makes more money. The only happy one in the group seems to be DAVID MANN who has just invested in snowshoes. Hairdressers LINDA FABRIZI and BARB ANNIS sit furtively in a corner hiding from two women who have purple streaked hair to complement their strawberry facials. (In the blackout, they used the wrong chemicals). Marketing expert LYNDA McKENZIE finally finds a phone line open and cancels an appoint¬ ment with DAVID LIANA to have her snow tires removed. At another table STEVE PELLETIER and MARK SULLIVAN sit pouting because they won ' t make it to the season’s opening baseball game. Suddenly there is a roaring noise outside, everyone dashes to the win¬ dows. What could it be? In a plane over Indianapolis en route to the class of ' 80 reunion, we find pilots LEE CHAPMAN, and JOHN SHELANSKAS, transporting mild-mannered landscaper JOHN PURDY with race car drivers BOB BAUCHERIO and PETER GUNN. Dashing from the cockpit, comes stewardess ROSEMARY GUPTON with the announcement that a blizzard has hit Suffield. MR. PURDY whispers something in her ear, “Would you like us to land by a phone booth?” she asks. No” he says, I carry my own equipment just show me the storage room. In a minute, leaping out of the room comes superplow. When the plane lands in a field close to the restaurant, superplow leaps out and plows a path to the res¬ taurant. Soon everyone in the restaurant, including BARB ANNIS and LINDA FABRIZI disguised in ski masks, boards the plane. Superplow then plows a runway so the plane can fly to the YMCA, the barns and the office buildings to rescue others. From here the plane flies to Bermuda where they will stay until Suffield is back to normal. Writer KIM STUART will surely have ample human interest material to incorporate into her up-coming novel, What¬ ever Happened to Our Senior Class? All concerned enjoy a sense of proud satisfaction that once again, as in the ’79 tornado, the unified effort, talent, and selfless dedication of the Class of ’80 has come through. And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream — and not make dreams your master; If you can think — and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with triumph and disaster And treat those two imposters just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools: If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings. And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the will which says to them: “Hold on!” If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with kings — nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it.
