It is unusual when a secondary school principal acts truly in behalf of the student body; and it is even less often that his efforts are so effective that the students appreciate them and admire their orginator. Student freedom, senior privi¬ leges, and other forms of liberalization initiated by Mr. Ouilette were gladly accepted along w ith the responsibilities which went w ith them. Mr. Ouilette, with his philosophy that “the students should run their own school” cer¬ tainly left Suffield High School better than he found it. In appreciation, we proudly dedicate the 1969 Sagitta to Mr. Arthur J. Ouilette, Jr. ARTHUR J. OUILETTE, JR. Under the strong leader¬ ship of the President, Ken Berube, the class of 1969 started its uphill journey to gain knowledge and wisdom; a trip that would lake four years. Assisting ken with the duties of lead¬ ing the ' , 69ors were: Joyce Baker, Vice-Presidt nt; Chris Burton. Secre¬ tary; and Janet Craham. Treasurer. Giving u a helping hand were: Mrs. Horton, Miss BiggerstafT. Mr. Clark, and Mr. Cecchini. SPIRITED FROSH TAKE HONORS Judged on class decorations and school spirit, the freshman class won the annual Suffield High School pep rally on December 16, 1965 in the gymnasium by unanimously defeating the other three classes. Highlights of the winning decora¬ tions on the theme of “New School- New Spirit were a huge wildcat and the faces of the varsity team members in separate beds with huge feet protruding from under the covers. On the covers was printed Suffield High. SOPHS SEEK STATUS The class of 1969 began their sopho¬ more year presided over by President Ken Berube, Vice-President Buddy Chris¬ tian, Secretary Allison Harvey, and Trea¬ surer Janet Graham. To advise them in all the problems that arose were Miss Jackie, Mrs. Sullivan, Mr. (dark, and Mr. Cecchini. In order to boost class spirit, tee shirts with Suffield and ’69 on the front and back were sold to any Sophomore for S2.00 To raise money, the class spon¬ sored several daners and bake sales. Besides the fact that everyone had good times, it helped to enlarge the treasury. In addition to these fund raising pro¬ jects, a “Car-Bash was held. After paint¬ ing several of the teachers’ names on an old car, the sophomores charged a quar¬ ter for the use of a sledge hammer for three waeks at the name of their choice. Not only was a great deal of money taken in but also it provided an outlet for pent- up frustrations. During the year many distinctions were awarded to several sophomores. Jim Hoynoski and Dav Graves were chosen to represent Suffield High in the All-Connecticut Band. Beth Potter re¬ ceived the Rotary Club Citizenship Award at graduation in recognition of service, self-sacrifice, industry, and a spirit of cooperation on behalf of the school and community. SI KKIKI.P SKNTIMKI. P«K 2 JUNIOR YEAR A GREAT SUCCESS To start the year off on the right fool. the Junior Class received (hr rlaso ring ilrsitinni lor them by Joslons. This year the rlasx obtained the op¬ tion of having either gold or white gold. Also. each Junior had his choice of mI one; light blue, spinal hluc, or a dc« p royal hluc. However, the basic appearance of the ring was similiar to what it had been in the past with the wildcat on one side and the scholar¬ ship ensignia on the other. Torn Lea hey. President; Allison Har¬ vey, Vice-President; Saudi Doyker, Sec¬ retary; and Karl Wencc, Treasurer led the class through a very successful cand dri e. Our advisor, Mr. Roth, supervised the sale and kept track of all the money and candy. When all the results of the drive were turned in, Ronnie Rulat and Pete Durnakowski were found to have sold the greatest amount of candy and were awarded cash prizes. ‘SHOWER OF STARS’ On May 25, 1968 under a ‘Shower of Stars ' the Junior Class danced till twelve to the music of Eddie Walenta and his hand. The school cafeteria was trans¬ formed into a heavenly sphere with blue crepe paper and sparkling stars. On each table a candle flickered giving off a romantic glow. As the 87 couples entered, they were met with a garden made from turf, flowers, and shrubs. The grand march began and as the c uples marched around the room the hand picked the queen and her court. Debra Szoka was crowned queen with a garland of red roses by the class President Tom Leahey. She was attend¬ ed by Dayl McComb. Pamela Hastings. Betsy Jaworski, Suzanne Woods, Susan Sales, Martha Potter, Ch ristine Sutula, and Sandra Doyker. Each member of the court was given a single red rose and a charm with which to remember this truly memorable night. Debra Szoka and her escort illiam C bailey. MAGAZINE DRIVE The Senior year started off with an energetic magazine drive. The class officers; Jack Henesey, President; Bud¬ dy Christian. Vice-President; Debra Szoka, Secretary; and Karl Wence. Treasurer headed up the four teams. Due to the large amount of enthusiasm on behalf of the team members many small, stuffed wildcats were soon se« n in the halls. “Bud ' s Duds surged ahead in ihe competition and claimed first place with a total of £1847.00. Jack Jokers placed s cond with £1774.16, “Wence’s Winners” third with £1745.74, and Deb ' s Dynamos fourth with £1442.47. The total amount of £6811.35 is the mtouH highest ever achieved at Suffield High. Prizes were also given out to the top five salesmen; Janice Biggerstaff, Lee Fasoli, Tom Leahey, Gwen Adams, and Barry Good- sell. “Bud’s Duds”, the winners of the magazine drive, and the top five sales¬ men were treated to a pizza party where they were served all they could eat and drink. Buddy, captain of the win¬ ning team, was awarded the permanent guardianship of McGregor, the multi¬ colored mascot. SENIORS ATTAIN HONORS Awards for excellence in scholarship have been presented to many seniors at Suffield High. Thomas Leahey and Allison Harvey receivid a blue blazer with the scholar¬ ship ensignia embroidered on the pock¬ et. the highest award possible, for maintaining a first honor roll rating eleven marking periods out of twelve. The I)AR Good Citizenship Award given to the senior girl who is outstand¬ ing in all round citizenship, manners, and courtesy to others, was awarded to Wendy Rowell who was selected by both the class and faculty. Inducted into the National Honor Society on October 23, 1968 were Gay Maiolo, Shari Potemski, Jacqueline Bie- lonko, Loretta Rush. Richard Williams, Robert Leach, and David Graves. Each member, including former members: Terese Monson, Allison Harvey, Debo¬ rah Roy, Jane Barry, Betsy Jenkinson, Thomas Leahey, Noel Underwood, W ayne Sherman, and Deborah Kennedy lit a candle symbolizing his member¬ ship. The parents of these students were invited to the assembly and were served a luncheon prepared by the home- making students after the assembly. SKI CLUB 120 FOREIGN EXCHANGE This year Suffield High School was host to two foreign exchange students. The first, Carlos Fche- verria, arrived in the United States on December 6. Thi v a the third time that Carlos had visited the United States. In 1962 he stayed in Houston and San Antonio, Texas, and in 1961 he and his parents made a trip to Miami, Florida. Our second exchange student, arriving on Decem¬ ber 28, was Carmen Contrreas from Valdivia, Chile. While Carmen was here she enjoyed trips to New York City, W ashington, and W iliiamsburg. In ad¬ dition, she toured the Harriet Beecher Stowe house and the Mark Twain House in Hartford. W hile Lee Fasoli, host to Carlos, was chosen as alternate, Betsy Jenkinson, hostess to Carmen, was chosen to live for 10 weeks in Santiago, Chile. Here she stayed w ith Gina Sirandoni w hose family was of Italian descent. Besides attending a private Catholic girls school, Betsy went on a tour of Southern Chile with 50 other Open Door exchange students that were staying in Santiago. This opportunity to visit South America not only has given Betsy a broader outlook at the language, customs, and people but has also helped to strenghten the ties of friendship with our Southern neighbors.
