— SUFFIELD HIGH SCHOOL SufField, Connecticut Dedication MISS KLIMASZEWSKI, MR. ZAK, MRS. FAY The years pass on; time ticks away; names slip from memory. But never throughout the entire parade of life shall we, the Class of 1961, forget the understanding with which our various troubles and problems have been met, the cheer¬ fulness with which we have been greeted, or the generosity which we have been offered—these being three of the things which you, our class advisors, have so faithfully given us. Soon we shall depart to go our own separate ways, but there will remain with each and every one of us the imprint of our many experiences with you. Thus, as a final appreciative gesture, we, the class of 1961, dedicate this book to you. A school system is judged by its graduates. We hope and believe that the lives of the Class of 1961 will bring much credit to the Suffield Public Schools. Dr. William M. Farris Yale University, B.S., M.Ed., Ph.D. Superintendent of Schools We wish you success and happiness in your venture through life. Howard C. Brown Springfield College, B.S., M.Ed. Signed, sealed and delivered: THE CLASS OF 1961 79 Class Prophecy 1961 Once upon a time in the kingdom of Suf- field, there was an institution, by name, Suffield High School. Through the lofty doors of this citadel passed the leaders of the future. In those days, Suffield was just a small hamlet with a population of 5500. What a difference it was from the bustling metropolis it is today in 1 970! Here comes a taxi; we han hop in and go now. Why, it’s Bob Sullivan, driving a shiny new taxi from his yellow fleet. First we’ll visit our alma mater. It hasn’t changed much, except for a new wing in the back, and the faculty, of course, is differ¬ ence. We just saw in the Suffield Gazette News, owned by Paul Pochron, a list of new teachers. Here are some of the prominent names we noticed. The new superintendent of Schools is David Dickenson, and the prin¬ cipal of the high school is Kent Fuller. New members of the faculty include: Jane Martyn, Latin; Mary Low Grabowski, Span¬ ish ; Dick Miller, English; Tom Conway, Mathematics; Lois Wisneski, French; Louis Favreau, Chemistry; Judy Price, Business, Becky Gibson, Cookie Blodgett, Ray Galetta, and Mike Sepko, Physical Education; and Russell Havourd, golf coach; Larry Foss, Manual Training; Nancy Rowell, and Carol Stratton, Home Economics; Debby Cowles, Vocal Director; John Zenisky, Instrumental Director; Dick Harris, Art Director; Cath¬ erine Johnson, Driver Education. Other members of the staff are Eleanor Anderson, school secretary; Sheila Hall, school nurse; Penny Stiles, and Cynthia Walker, dieti¬ cian ; Pat Bancroft, librarian; Walter De- Gray, head of the guidance department; Dave Lill, head janitor, and Bill Sheridan his aid. After driving around the grounds and observing the new baseball and football fields, where the team is working out, we head towards the shopping center. Oops! Here comes a train; so we’ll have to stop. Can you imagine who are the chief engineers that we see through the window? They’re Donna Pratt and Ed Harriman! My, the shopping center certainly has grown since we were in school! In place of the three stores that once were here, we see rows and rows of bright, shiny stores; Craig and Nodwell Supermarket; “The Bread Basket” Bakery, run by Janice Edwards; “The Gangrene Thumb” florist shop, op¬ erated by Bonnie Blaisdell, Diane Merrell, and John Barry; “The Bottom of The Pot” coffee huose, run by Bob Sutton. Look, there’s a new Friendly’s! We hear that its owned by Judy Ann Grabinski and Mary Ann Bailomyza and that Sandra Russell and Sue Morgan work there. Here’s a Radio and TV repair shop, operated by John Smith and Carl Tootill; a men’s haberdashery, “The Sharp Crease,” owned by Vernon Hall; “The Dull Razor,” run by Leon Link; “New World Art Gallery,” owned by Randy Walker, who sells the works of Dave Jorgenson. Over to our right is a new beauty salon, “Beauty Alley”, the head stylist of which is Dave Landry; other hairdressers under him are Ann Swanson and Barbara Turner. Looking in the window of Peggy Roalf’s bookstore, “The Musty Shelf,” we see on the best seller lists are two books written by Suffield greats: “Suffield Place,” by Sally Ann Osowiecki; “The Techniques of Love,” by Andy Love. Across the street is a photo¬ grapher who does the pictures for the SHS yearbooks now, John L. Sullivan. Friendly’s has competition across the way—“The Lean¬ ing Tower of Pizza,” run by Toug Tower and Mary Lou Gray. Since election time is drawing near, we see campaign posters plastered all around. 80 Some of our local politicians running for office are George Bellmore for Town Select¬ man; Bob Chase and John Samsel, opposing each other for a seat in the State General Assembly; and Ed Rodzen for Tax Collector of Suffield. We heard that Duncan Macbeth has recently become the public accountant for the town treasury. Looking across the street we see a new establishment for Suffield “The Tarnished Star” Theater, managed by Chet Cynoski. Currently showing is “I Was A Teenage Cassanova” starring Woody Jacobus; also in this Academy Award winning film are Don¬ ald Kennett, Pat Bruce, Gary McQuillan, and Rozanne Kalb. The ticket girl is Terry Gra- bowski; the projectionist, Ronnie Miller; the ushers, Danny Buckavich and Eddie Burke; the matrons in the ladies’ room are Dale Martinck and Evelyn Mayrand. Over there— ah—we see our popcorn girl, Ernie Colson, snatching a handful of popcorn behind the manager’s back. As we leave the shopping center, we come to Suffield’s garage row. To our right is the “Suffield Volks Wagon Service Center”, owned by Denny Jenkinson. and “The Rusty Joint Auto Body”, run by Fred LaForge, Robert Latonie, and Elliott Parker. George Hinckley has taken over his uncle’s Esso Station. Driving out to West Suffield, we see a familiar face at Margie’s Fruit Stand. Here comes Robert Clark bringing in a truck a new load of shiny red apples. Here on our right is an establishment dear to our hearts, “Buster’s Snack Bar”, which is run by Pricilla Romano. As we come up North Grand Street, we see before us a dazzling glass and aluminum structure, the Suffield General Hospital. We’ve heard that one of the resident doctors is Ronnie Meyers. The supervisor of nurses is Kay Berry, and the nurses under her are Jackie Gray, Terry Sherman, and Lin Gregg. The chemical technician is Nancy Orr. Other members of the staff are Pat Schiessl and Alice Hopkins, secretaries, and Judy Szczepanik, receptionist. Look! There is a patient on the operating table—Chuck Lincoln. His doctor is the famous surgeon, Betti Jane Ernest. The X-ray technician is Jane Holt. Traveling on back to the center, we notice a huge, sprawling farm, one of the largest in the tobacco industry today, which is owned by Ricky Stoughton and Tommy Carney. Driving through the center, we see by the traffic light Suffield’s new Chief of Police, Paul Baldyga; other new members are Chet Sobinski, John Cooper, Jerry Cebula, and Paul Lukas. Nancy Baytate directs the kiddies across the crowded streets. Also on the force are Judy Root and Susan Patterson as truant officers. On the Community Bulletin Board we see some coming attractions: the internationally famous dance team of Sue Morrison and Teddy Lord; also coming, the famous base¬ ball star, John Hierl and his manager, Jeff Matus, Merble Harrington in a lecture at the church hall Saturday night. Her theme is “My Life as a Foreign Correspondent”. Today is the grand opening of Clark’s De¬ partment Store. Phyllis Dorman is the ad¬ vertising manager, and Diane Boucher, Noreen McCarthy, and Cathy Washburn are sales ladies. Now after seeing our town and all the graduates of ’61, we know that even with all these changes, the people are the same ones we knew back at Suffield High, once upon a time. 81 •Vv A v v imes Cl ass When we entered Suffield High as freshmen, we found that our class was partially composed of East Granby students. We enjoyed meeting so many more students and we welcomed them into our classes and extra-curricular activities. Later in the year, we were all very glad to hear the news that these stu¬ dents would stay to graduate with us. In late October, the freshmen entering the Latin Club were initiated. They were a sight with their pigtails, bows, pant legs rolled up, and their pil¬ lowcases filled with books. We were fortunate enough to have some of our boys playing varsity sports. Also, many members of our class belonged to the band. That year our class officers were President, Dave Lill; Vice-president, Woody Jacobus; Secretary, Judy Price; and Treasurer, Becky Gibson. Our sole money-raising project was to hold a rec¬ ord hop. We netted an average amount of money from this dance. The first thing we did when we returned in the fall of our sophomore year was to elect our class officers, who were President, Dave Lill; Vice-presi¬ dent, Cookie Blodgett; Secretary, Judy Price; and Treasurer, Becky Gibson. The big day of the year was late fall when we received our class rings. To add to our treasury, we sold all occasion greet¬ ing cards. Our sophomore dance “Winter Wonderland”, was held on December 20. As far as sports went, Suffield shared the co¬ championship with Hale-Ray in soccer. This same year, a community drive was held to buy ne w uniforms for our band. The drive was a success, and the band members looked absolutely dashing in their new uniforms. In our junior year, our president of the past four years was defeated by Eddie Harriman. In the vice- presidential spot, we found Gary McQuillan. Two of¬ ficers who remained in the respective offices of sec¬ retary and treasurer were Judy Price and Becky Gibson. November 23 was the day we had eagerly been waiting for. It was bright and early that morning that we met at the Windsor Locks train station to go to New York City to visit the United Nations. After our tour of the building and luncheon at the U.N. dining room, we were free to roam the city, until our meeting at Grand Central. About Christmas-time, we sold wrapping paper, ribbon, and cards. The night of March 12, 1960, Suffield High played St. Anthony in the finals of the basketball tourna¬ ment in the UConn field house. It was a thrilling and close game, but we came out of it as “State Champions.” Those who were chosen for the All-State Band from the Class of ’61 were Curtis Belden, George Bellmore, Becky Gibson, Woody Jacbus, David Lill, and John Zenisky. About that time, the delegates to Girls’ and Boys’ States were also chosen. Judy Price and Donna Pratt were to attend Laurel Girls’ State, and Eddie Har¬ riman and Dave Lill were to attend Nutmeg Boys’ State. The Junior Prom, “Bali Ha’i”, was held on May 14. It went beautifully under the guidance of our eeneral chairman, Eddie Harriman. Eddie Walenta’s History Band chose Bonnie Blaisdell as queen, and the eight attendants in her court were Judy Root, Nancy Batayte, Roxanne Kalb, Donna Pratt, Becky Gibson, Patsy Bruce, Sue Morgan, and Terrv Orabowski, Cookie Blodgett was to be the captain of the cheerleaders the following year. Then came our year! We didn’t know exactly what we’d be confronted with, but we were deter- minded to do our best in every case. David Lill start¬ ed off his year by regaining the office of president from Eddie. The vice-presidency was captured by John Samsel. Becky and Judy were to carry on the duties of the respective offices of treasurer and secretary once more. Very early in the year, our editors began plan¬ ning for the yearbook. It certainly was a big proj¬ ect, into which a great deal of hard work went. The Senior Patrol elected John Samsel as its cap¬ tain. This new patrol had to put up with something new — fire doors. Some tackled the problem of bottle necks at their posts by using door stops. The students didn’t regard these doors very highly at first. It became tiresome pushing and pulling an average of six doors between every class. In the fall, our magazine drive was held. We broke all records. The three top salesmen were John Samsel, Judy Price, and Lin Gregg. The students accepted into the National Honor Society were Nancy Batayte, Mary Ann Bialomyza, Cookie Blodgett, Bettie Jane Ernst, Becky Gibson, Eddie Harriman, Merble Harrington, Woody Jacobus, Dave Lill, Jane Martyn, Gary McQuillan, Nancy Orr, Sally Ann Osowiecki, Donna Pratt, Judy Price, Penny Stiles, John Sullivan, and John Zenisky. Judy Price was the winner of the D.A.R. Good Citizen Award, and Susan Morrison that of the Betty Crocker Homemaking of Tomorrow Contest. John Zenisky made the All-Eastern Band, which is composed of the best musicians in All-State Bands from Maine to Maryland. Suffield played Hale-Ray at Wesleyan University for the state soccer c hampionship and were “State Champs.” The Third Annual Senior Ball, “Wonderland By Night”, was held February 11. We had Eddie Wa¬ lenta’s Band again. Under the direction of John Samsel, the ball was well planned. The queen was Judy Root. Her attendants were Nancy Batayte, Cookie Blodgett, Margie Galetta, Lin Gregg, Rox¬ anne Kalb, Susan Morrison, Nancy Orr, and Joan Petrauskas. We stood behind the Annual Variety Show, as many of the senior classes before us had done. We were the last class to take a trip to Wash¬ ington. We left early Monday morning, April 24, by bus. After touring Washington and Williamsburg, we started home on Thursday, April 27, tired and happy. This was truly an experience we will never forget. The close of our high school career came in mid- June with our banquet and finally our big night— graduation. As is always the case, we left with dif¬ ferent emotions. Some of us were joyous of the fact that we were finally out, and others of us were sorry that those wonderful high school years could never be lived again. Some of us were off on our own to earn a living and others of us were off for the gates of higher learning. We will always remember our classmates and Mrs. Fay, Miss Klim, and Mr. Zak who stood by us during our six years at SHS. 83 Our 3utuve Qoals Eleanor Anderson.Secretary Paul L ' hldyga . .Stock Car Driver Pat Bancroft.
