The 1979 Varsity Football Squad had a depressing season, haunted by many upsets. Record-wise, the team was not successful. How- ever, the 1978 team was far more spirited than any previous football squad here at Suffield. The team was lead by a strong coaching squad, with head coach Leon Waskiewicz, and assistant coaches Bill DeSalvo, John Burns, and Jerry LaPlante. The feam's offensive unit was suc- cessful when in full strength, but throughout most of the season, it was plagued by injury. The team produced a very strong defensive, known as the Orange Crush . This season was head coach Waskiewicz's last season after many years as coach. He will be missed greatly by all who have known him as coach. From Jill's constant state of hyperactivity, to Judy's Hawaiian shorts, to CarIa's continual contact with the ground, to Lili's vampire joke, and Kendra's ballooning ankles, we feel that this variety added to the char- acter of our magnificent team. Our forceful halfbacks also combined to make a strong defense. Co-captain heckle, and Kathy Gondarowski's nag- ging neck, kept away the opposing team. Our goalie and co-captain, Bev Fors- man, verbally aided us in fundamental coaching techniques from the net, with an occasional chocolate bar or two. She added confidence, as well as sweetness to our team. Thanks to a colorful team and a ter- rific coach. The season was indeed a successful one. Thank you, Mrs. Drinker, ' Lk. Due to the loss of five major runners, our season was shaky, but was pulled together late in the sea- son by the surprising strength of Bill Murzda and Chris Shaw. Our training began early in the sea- son, before school even started, at a place called Tunxis in the Berkshires. The house was owned by Gordie's brother, Hank. We ran hard there, and tested our talent, running with the famous Andy West for twelve miles. We all ran well and experienced a growth of pride and a feeling that we would have the best team that hit Suffield. Since Tunxis, our team members began to drop like flies. Halfway through the season it was all up to York Mario. At this point we began to lose, not only meets, but also team confidence. All of a sudden, out of nowhere arrived two underclassmen, and our spirits revived. Our last race . g , the odds were against us, but Grieb and the team were super-psgched. With total effort and drive, the uffield Cross Country team won the race excitingly. ln reflecting on the season, there is much to say, but these phrases will help bring back the memories of how close the team was. There was the Hydrotherapy group at Tunxis, Grieb's awful harmonica, singing in the vans, The Indian, Rufus' rabbit run, tough guys, Grover, seven lost runners on the six mile loop, excellent managers: Rosene and Figueroa, good weather and the last race. As a senior it is sad to leave Suffield and its Cross Country program, but the underclassmen are all ready to go and race hard in the next season. With run- ners like Murzda, Shaw, Edgcomb, Drinker, Fogg and others, Gordy Glo- ver should be exalted about the next season. Girls' Cross Country 1-9 1st row: McManus, Milosis, Keney, Harrop, 2nd row: Dra- peau, Labun, Sheehan, Woods, Carroll, Starr tcaptj, Flosene, Figueroa Cmgrs.J 3rd row: Coaches Compton and Glover. Although the girls' cross country team fin- ished its season with only one victory over Hopkins Grammar, the team displayed a tre- mendous amount of spirit and zeal. The consistent efforts of Nina Harrop, Lisa Keney, Judy Woods, Mary Drapeau and Cap- tain Jennifer Starr, combined with the rein- forcing efforts of Linda Labun, Mary Carroll, Nancy McManus, Chris Milosis, and towards the end, Claire Sheehan, helped develop a VERY determined team. Without the mathematical mind of Gordon Glover, who at times lead us to believe that the six mile loop was actually three, and the wishful thinking of Mr. Compton when he entered the girls' racing team for a llamara- thon , thinking it would be a breeze for us, and a good workout for them, but quite the contrary for all. Behind these coaches we had a lot of encouragement from Margaret Figueroa and Abby Rosene, as well as from Grover. Along with the girls' racing team, this year we had three very diligent intramural runners, Donna Goldbach, Colleen Green and Yoshi Matsuda, who, even though they had never run before, showed tremendous improve- ment throughout the season. Even with the loss of three seniors, Judy, Nancy and Jennifer, there still remains a solid foundation of girls who will bring Suffield yet another year of strong, competitive racing as seen in the past. Schattman. 2nd row: Coach Graden McKenzie C Coates J Palomba, Vogelman, Van Law, Goodwin, Meyer, Currey, Aaron, Goodarzl Bradley coach Gooch lt was a season of high ups and very low downs, but overall we were suc- cessful. As a team unit we strived to play our very best and when we did we were awesome. A reflection of this had to be the game against Pomfret, who had not lost a game in thirty-six out- ings, as we fought and won our tough- est game, 1-0. Outstanding performances were seen in every player at one time or another, but much credit must be given to such players as Jim Van Law, who did an outstanding job in his first year in goal. On defense there was no one to match the ability of Jim Goodwin or the hustle of Kevin Stone. Likewise on offense no one could match the speed and scoring prowess of Hugh Rice. But overall the credit for our hard-earned wins and tough-fought losses must be given to the team as a whole. Ours was a tight group of players who strongly loved and wanted to play soccer, and who put their noses to the grindstone when needed. The come- back victory against Berkshire and the near-miss against Deerfield, show that determination and spirit. Our record was not fantastic but the moral and spiritual victories won made the sea- son a truly enjoyable and unforgettable one. The co-captains want to give much recognition and thanks to Coaches Gooch and Graden who offered their friendship, knowledge, and love of the game to each of us. Girls' Varisty Soccer 5-8 Although the record 5-8-0 does not show it, the girls' varsity soccer team had a fairly successful season. We had many strong and experienced players, and our coach Mr. Downes, was no longer new to the style of girls' soccer. Coach Downes organized a strong team of jet-like strikers, dashing halfbacks, 3 fait and fierce fullback, and goalie, Helen fpull 'em upj mit . We started the season by beating Ethel Walker for the first time, by a score of 5-3. We then lost to Hotchkiss 1-4. In defeating Berkshire, everyone had a fantastic game. After that victory, however our record started declining and we won only a few more games. In the best game we played we lost to Willi- ston, 3-1. Next fall, many of the team's players will be gone. We wish the team the best of luck in next year's season, We'Il be back to play you in the alumni game! Thanks to Cindy and Sue. We really appreciate your contrib- ution to the team. A very special thanks to Coach Downes from all of us. Good luck and thank you. wh: ','. 1st row: Brennan, Krasner McCormack, Tucker fco-captsj, L Mackey, Gallup, Kinne, L. Entering into a new environment and trying to adapt in two days can be relatively traumatic. Orientation is designed to ease this trauma. The more ambitious faculty mem- bers, together with the new students, undergo a series of mental and physi- cal exercises in which they all must cooperate to achieve the final goal. These activities include part of the Outward Bound course, some of which are: the early morning runs, the collec- tive climbing of a fourteen-foot wall, as well as many other surprises. But don't let that fool you, Our defeats were none! Such is the cheer of a certain swim team from Suffield Academy. We were never defeated despite our many losses, because we kept striving and striv- ing if not to beat other teams, at least to conquer our own times. David Hil- yard, head coach, and Fred Fischer, assistant coach, led us with their never ending perseverance to have us improve both physically and emotionally. We hope to do much better next year because of the large number of returning swimmers. There was only one senior, Guyer Young, whose main concern was to get out of his oversize bathing suit and into a Speedo. The team was led by Captain Justin Salvio, supported greatly by Dave Spitzler, Jeff Green, Prescott Fogg, Chris Soltis, Graham Lewis, Mark Try Anything McCullagh Cwho holds the all around D.Q. awardj, Flip Drinker, Brian Aaron, and Peter Drasher. There are many other fine swimmers who contributed greatly to the team. Yes, these are all fine swimmers, and that is why we plan to do so well next year. After all, from the bottom, it's hard to go any way but up. We worked and we stroked, And now we are done! One burden we always faced was the smallness of our team. It took great courage for the girls to enter a meet with 9 swimmers when our opponents had 25! However, our few victories made the season worthwhile. Our first win was a combined effort with the boys to kill Worcester Academy. A week later, the girls displayed a fine per- formance as they swam past Canter- bury. Our final-meet against Miss Por- ter's proved by far to be the most exciting and meaningful. Having lost to MPS a week earlier in our own pool, we were bound and determined to get them in their pool. And so we did. We killed that MPS team 41 to 38. Our team took seven first places out of only ten events, and everyone beat their best time. T 1st row: Dawley, Samuelson, Carroll fcapt.J, McManus, McDaniel, Quast fmgr.J, 2nd row: Fuller, Quirk, J. Hawkins, Grumoli. 2nd row: Currey, Cotnoir, Carey, Goodwin, Meyer, Figueroa, J. Glover. Last year's unprecedented 19-1 record was definitely a hard act to follow. However, the 1978- 1979 Varsity Basketball Team came away from this season looking very good. The Tigers achieved runner-up status at the Kingswood lnvi- tational Tournament and in the New England Prep School championships. If there is one thing that should be said about this year's team it is that they got the most out of what they had. There have been teams in previous years that had more talent but did not perform nearly as well. The team and the school should be very proud of this year's accomplishments. Co-Captains Ken Watson and Lou Aurichio were the only returning lettermen this year. The remaining three starting positions were filled by Jim Goodwin, Joe Glover, and Mark Grumoli. The strengths and abilities of each player blended well to form a surprisingly strong unit. Jim Meyer and Randy Hawkins came off the bench to pro- vide effective help in the front and back court. The driving force behind this team, however, was generated by the loyal and enthusiastic group who did not see much playing time. They worked hard every day in practice to prepare the starters for games. Obviously, the team would not have been a team without them. Sincere appreciation and warm thanks are extended to Coaches Kinne and Pervear for their hard work and dedication. Good luck to all Suffield basketball teams in the future! Girls' Varsity Basketball 8-7 This year, with only three returning varsity basketball lettermen, the team hustled to a winning season. Our record of 8-7 does not truthfully portray the total effort that was generated through the spirit of the girls. Many of our losses were only by the margin of a few points including Kingswood, Canter- bury, and Hotchkiss. We had big wins over Miss Porter's Q40-293 and Pomfret C45-225 along with a well-deserved, one point victory over Berkshire. The team will be losing four seniors this year, but the strength of the remain- ing underclassmen is an indication of a promising and productive season next year. The team would like to thank coach Wasky for a great season and a deli- cious meal. f 'tv' M' 'M . 1st row: Keney, Brennan, Kinne, Karanian, Mackey, fco-capts.J Skaff, Forsman. 2nd Q row: Coach Waskiewicz, Raynard, Spurr, Dustin, Howell, Mitchell, Morris, Labun. Boys' Alpine Skiing 1-15 From the standpoint of wins and losses, this would not be considered a productive year. We were able to win once against Trinity-Pawling and fell repeatedly to the other powerhouses in the league. The important thing about this year's team was that they never gave up. We made considerable progress during the season and were never totally out of any meets. Having worked with Suffield ski team for twelve years, I would have to call the 1979 Varsity Ski Team the best group of individuals l've had the pleasure to work with in several years. We are developing a solid nucleus of Rockwell, Olsen, Ftenner, Divine, G. Schattman O'Sullivan. Missing: Grady, Malcom, Gleason, Kauf man. underclassmen and with help from the Admissions Office, the only way we can go is up. If attitude had won races the team would have been champions. The team's most consistent performer was Glenn Schattman '79, followed closely by Jeff Kaufman '81 and Geoff Rockwell '82. When Shane Grady '79 and Rich Malcolm '79 stood up, they were very competi- tive. Ed O'Sullivan '80 is improving rapidly with experi- ence. Brad Divine '80, racing for the first time, shows promise for next year. Bill Olsen '81 and Chris Gleason rounded out the squad. Girls' Alpine Skiing 0-8 visits. 'Ai u McKenzie, Rainsford, Harrop, Meili, Welch, Alford, Krasner, Coach Rockwell. Missing: Coach Clark, Scudder, DeTurk. ? 'Shu 4 A X 'N-N391 Q9 , . Suffield is still in the process of trying to establish its Girls' ski program. Linda Scudder '79 has been carrying the major share of the burden. With her graduation in the spring this task will fall to a solid group of underclass mem- bers, Kim Wills, Carla Meili, and Alison Welch. The team will also lose to graduation Angela Rains- ford, and Nancy DeTurk. Return- ing next year as seniors will be Lisa McKenzie, Nina Harrop, and Maria Alford. lt's difficult when we keep trying but do not realize that all good things take time! I must say that spirits were always good, even in the rain and ice of '79, Regardless of wins and losses, everyone who skis at Suffield can look back with fond memories on the comaraderie and fun we all shared, whether it be Nancy DeTurke's spectacular crash or Lisa's adventures in the lodge. The addition of Catherine Clark allowed us tovexpand the pro- gram and her driving skills and moral support were greatly appreciated. 53 - I x, , , 1 ,lX'A!E',. X Many of the hopes of this year's team were washed out with the rains of January. We had potentially the strongest team in years, but also the worst skiing weather in quite a few seasons. More meets were canceled than were held, and we found ourselves going to meets with little or no practice. As usual, the Berkshire Ski League offered tough competition, and we were able to score only one victory over a weakened Salisbury team. But several new skiers emerged this year to help the team effort. Sammy Orr finished first in the dual meet against Simsbury High, Dave Drinker gave an excellent first-year performance and Peter Bloznalis came out of nowhere to strengthen the top group. Veterans Rod Fre- chette, Josh Smith and Ken Coelho provided the experience and encouraged some promising newcomers: Ken Klesczewski, Dan Car- stens and Todd Wolfe, who gave the team the depth it lacked. In spite of the fact that February was almost snowless, enthusiasm and morale remained high. The excellent team spirit, coupled with a promise of some strong returning skiers, makes next season look a lit- tle brighter. - 55 Varsity Wrestling 10 0 1st row: Williams, 98, Adler, 1072 Baker, 1141 Young, 1212 Ciemniewski, 1193 Peters, 126 Russell, 1381 Giordano, 132. 2nd row: Coach Peraino, Burdge, unl.3 Arnold, 1691 Levanto 169, Chase, 1691 Mario, 1452 Coach DeSalvo. We ended the season undefeated and with the Western New England Championship Trophy. Coach Frank P. Peraino created a solidarity in the team that allowed us to conquer the opposition, the most impressive being the win over Loomis Chaffee C31-21j. Chester Peters is a part of Suf- field's wrestling history, after being the state and national finalist, but every member was valuable. Flip Williams and Ken Lohr won the state finals, while Capt. Brian Green placed second in the States and went on to wrestle in the Nationals. Phil Baker, John Giordano, York Mario, Tim Arnold and Bruce Burdge come off with thirds, and the squad finished with a 27 point lead over the second place team, Loomis. Flip Williams and Tim Arnold went on to place second in the New Englands. Special recognition should go to all those whose names are not men- tioned, because of their long, hard dedication that helped make Suf- field Wrestling a powerhouse. Coaches Peraino and DeSalvo should be given recognition for their dedication and concern for every member of the team. l I Varsity Hockey 5-7 1st row: Flynn fmgr.J, Edgcomb, Stone, Goodman ftri-capts.J, R. The '79 season can be termed successful for various reasons. First, the team members devel- oped a supportive attitude and in so doing enabled themselves to learn and appreciate the experi- ence. Also, some fairly powerful teams were shown that despite the lack of a spectacular record, Suffield baseball was again a via- ble force. The nucleus of the team was made up of seniors who combined leadership and talent to add respectability to this year's squad. They are Chris Coates, who displayed a strong arm and also led the team with a .526 slug- ging percentage and Mark Gru- moli, who had a .395 average and played outstanding defense. 1st row: Renner, R. Hawkins, C. Soltis, Coates, Fenton, Killam, Fi. Stanley, 2nd row: Keney fmgr.J J. Stanley, Grumoli, F. Figueroa, Cot- noir, Blessis, DiLuzio, Flarus, Coach Cleary. Andy Rarus added expertise to the mound and sound defense, Fig Figueroa with his ability to make some superb catches in left field. Bob Stanley played a classy centerfield while hitting .322, and Reid Flenner played hard and used his shotgun arm in right field to keep other teams off balance. 1st row: Fi. Coates, McDaniel, McCormack ico-capt.J, H. Smith Qco-capt.J, L. McCullagh, Schrager. 2nd row: Coach DeSaIvo, Brennan Samuelson, L. Palomba, Wells Kinne, T. Landers. Varsity Softball 10-3 Led by its co-captains Sheila McCormack and Helen Smith, this year's Varsity Softball team enjoyed a highly successful season. After losing two of the first three games, the team turned it around to win the next nine in a row, and finish with a 10-3 record. Helped by the fielding of shortstop Jennifer Brennan and sophomore Robbin Coates, come- from-behind victories were achieved over Berkshire and Miss Porter's. From then on, the players played with a confidence and men- tal toughness that proved to be the winning edge in a number of games. Helped by the vastly improved hit- ting of seniors Lisa Palomba, Renee McDaniel, and Tracy Landers, the squad fought from a 6-0 deficit against Kingswood to over- power a fine team. Against Wil- liston, another arch rival, Linda McCullagh, Sue Schrager, and Kim Wells spearheaded a 27- hit attack which completely demoralized the opposition. The team will sorely miss the talents of its seniors as they were the core of our success. Yet, the future holds promise since the key positions of pitcher, catcher and first were held by underclassmen Martha Samuelson, Kim Wills and Kelly Kinne. 79 1st row: Polisky, Brainard, MacKinnon, Tahbaz, Grieb, Frautschi, M. Thomas. .Q at -1 1 l Outstanding leadership by example on the part of Captain Ken Watson and outstanding performances in competition by Paul Frautschi provided the inspiration for a very young and inexperienced team. The only other key senior competi- tors were Jeff Brainard and Matt Grieb. But juniors Ed O'Sullivan, Gerry Polisky, Jeff Green, Ken Klesczewski and Eric Kruse showed real poise and maturity as competitors ao '.. Boys' Varsity Track 6-5 .1 Y-f, il- ll and such sophomores and freshmen as Dan Harris, Thomas Uribe, Rich Scullin, Dave Drinker, and Bill Murdza quickly developed into very tough competitors. Especially impressive was sophomore Brian Kaplan's undefeated season in the 440. We had fun and enjoyed the rare luxury or a very successful competitive season in what most coaches whens: n rm-, y plphn gr IM el .----1-u l 'f would have called a building year. Memories will include the long successful trip to the New Englands in Bath, Maine, a hor- rible day at Hotchkiss in the rain, Ftocky's wisdom and lore, O'SulIivan's twelve foot soar, and Frautschi's thundering roar. Girls' Varsity Track 2-6 Few in numbers, limited in experience, and often injured, we achieved a Suffield first by field- ing a team that was able to com- pete in every event in a full dual meet season. Credit for this has to go to Captain Cristin Gallup's indomitable spirit and example of work, Jill Skaff's tough-minded quickness, Sally Howell's ignor- ing pain, and Mary Drapeau's will- ingness to run farther than any- body else. Laura Burek, Robin Smith, Maria Alford, Lisa Hernan- dez, and Mary O'Brien tried any- thing they were asked to, and Sara Gorman, Nina Harrop, Linda Labun, and Ann Utley worked hard to make some vital contrib- utions. Who can ever forget these sweet wins against Canterbury and Kingswood-Oxford, or that special day at Williston when we lost a meet and found our pride? s'l rn 'R' fi' 1st row: Hernandez, M. Missing: Bitting fco-capt.J The year of 1979 for the Var- sity Golf team was mostly a building year. We had only three returning lettermen from last year consisting of one sen- ior, co-capt. Bill Bitting, and two juniors, Co-capt. Joe Palomba and Matt Beaudry. These three occupied the top starting positions, and were backed up by mostlyiall under- classmen. Junior John Swan- son, Tim Harris, sophomore Sam Orr 17 and 4 for the sea- sonj, and Phil Landers made up this fairly strong back-up. Also, Senior Bryan Smith and sophomore Sarge Karch were there whenever needed to fill the number seven position. We started this '79 season not expecting to win many of the large school matches, and we did not, yet we looked strong against Mt. Hermon and others. Our goal was at least to break even for the season, but unfortunately our last three possible victories were rained out. Our coach, JR Fuller and the team, feel we were quite successful this season and have high hopes for next sea- son, forthe 1980 Golf team will have seven returning letter- men. Boys' Varsity Tennis 4-7 K' 1st row: Stephens, Dutcher, Mulligan, Van Law. 2nd row: Goulet, Barbieri, Aurichio, W Spitzler, coach Downes. V., X. 'r ,ff -,......,-' After a strong start over the first half of the sea- son, boys' tennis dropped its last five matches to strong opponents and ended the season with a 4- 7 record. The highlight of the season was a 5-4 win over Avon, a match that was postponed by rain in the middle of the last, deciding double match. Bard Stephens and Steve Dutcher me their opponents again three weeks later, winning the second and third sets in a come-from-behind victory to win the match for Suffield. Individual successes included wins by Joe Bar bieri against Kingswood, Louis Aurichio a Loomis, Rob Goulet with Longmeadow and Bar Stephens against a strong number one playe from Westminster, but against those opponents the team was unable to combine our success Jim Van Law and Steve Dutcher worked hard an helped at fifth and sixth singles, while Brendo Mulligan played doubles. The doubles team included Spitzler and Goulet, who will be return ing players for next year. Girls' Varsity Tennis 6-6 1st row: Fuller, foo-capt.J Gondarowski, fco-capt.J K. Vardakis. 2nd row: Coach Hof- facker, Ellenoff, Mitchell, Flynn, Spurr. 3rd row: Bradley, Rogers, K. Campbell. Miss- ing: Kahan, Tucker. X! The girls' Varsity Tennis got off to a slow start, but ended with the best record Suffield Academy has ever had. The team consisted of number one Judy Mitchell, number two Claire Kahan, number three Martha Fuller, and number four Kathy Gondarowski. The number one doubles team was Kim Vardakis and Grace Flynn, num- ber two was Debby Rogers and Sara Tucker, and number three was Debby Ellenoff and Kim Campbell. We started the season by losing to Westfield High, but if given the chance, we would probably have beaten them. Throughout the season, we all improved our game tremen- dously. At the start of the season we were all unsure of our abilities, but as time wore on we proved to be a winning team. Our record shows this with six triumphs and six defeats. Even though we will miss our five seniors, -we are sure to have a winning team next year. Following the pattern of past years, a fall extended weekend trip made use of unusually mild weather to climb in the White Mountains. Faculty members Rockwell, Downes and Coerper accompanied twelve students up Cannon Mt. one day and Mts. Lafayette and Lincoln the next, bask- ing in a pouring rain for the last mile or so. Mr. Graden took a smaller group of stalwarts into the same mountain region in the dead of winter, surmounting the snow cover for an exhilarating hike, unparalleled views across the icy landscape and a sound sleep in minus 20 degree temperatures. Finally, Burnt Island once again attracted a Suffield contingent over Spring Weekend to a spot six miles off the Maine coast. Sur- rounded by fir and pine, an abandoned Coast Guard Station, rocky coastline and steady surf on the 300 acre island, thirteen students and Mr. Rockwell, Mr. Downes and Mr. McCurdy slept, played fris- bee, scaled cliffs on the island's south side with ropes, pitons and carabiners, feasted on mussels and hot seaweed, and generally unwound from the pace of school life. For all the good-and-bad weather, fabulous landscape and inevi table food, it was mainly the shared experiences among the peopl who went which made the trips memorable.
