Girls' Cross Country 2-5 1st row: Crabtree, Keney, Arnquist, Glass. 2nd row: Coach Compton, Harrop, Starr, Cummings, P. Pohanka, Coach Glover. For the first time at Suffield Academy, girls' cross country competed in a full schedule of meets against established prep schools. Under the coaching of Gordon Glo- ver and David Compton and the consistent running of Jennifer Starr, Nina Harrop, Trish Pohanka, Cheryl Glass and co-cap- tains Lisa Keney and Helen Arnquist, victo- ries were posted against Taft and Kings- wood. This year's team established its posi- tion as a highly competitive team for the future by competing in an invitational race hosted by Suffield in which nine teams com- peted, and by competing in the Girls' New England Championship held at Choate. Looking ahead to next year, returning run- ners Starr and Harrop should pace the team. This year the team showed a great deal of sportsmanship towards other teams and an extreme interest in the growing trend of girls' competitive running at Suf- field.

Boys' Cross Country 1-9 1st row: Kaplan, R. Stanley, Fogg, Kheirkhah, Viola, Wolfe, Forauer, M. Brown, Berry. 2nd row: Coach Compton, J. Green, Kieger, Rarus, Benedict, Bergeron, Cahill Ccaptb, Barnard, McCrea, Wilson, Bryans, Aurichio, Grieb, Coach Glover. These are few experiences harder to take than a long losing season. But this long losing season had some bright spots. First of all, there was the courageous and good humored leadership of seniors Bill Cahill, Steve Ber- geron and Pete Barnard. Secondly, we never quit and we never gave up, we took the best we had into every race and did the best we could. The third bright spot grows directly out of the second. Next year we start the season with eight tough and experienced veterans who are hungry to win. And that's a tar cry from the way we started this season, with one really experienced and one slightly experienced run- ner. Those who ran up those long painful hills of this building year will remember each other with respect and admiration, for what- ever this team's record, its members: Captain Bill Cahill, Nlatt Grieb, Andy Rarus, Steve Ber- geron, Pete Barnard, Louis Aurichio, Bill Kieger and Brian Kaplan each won their own private races. Varsity Field Hockey 3-7-1 1st row: Shaffer, Rockwell, Sheehan, Bogle, Fogg. 2nd row: Gondarowski, Hayden, Coach Fraser, McDaniel, Dee. 3rd row: Heffernan, Stewart, Longo, Brown, H. Smith. The field hockey team had a disappointing season this year. Many games were rained out, we could only really play on the fields the first two weeks of school. Parents' Day was an exciting game, winning over Williston 5-1, Another victory took place with 18 sec- onds left. Lisa Longo put in the winning goal over Pom- fret. Much improvement in Donna Hayden's game. . . The culmination of the season came against Mac- Duffie in a very exciting game which ended in a tie due to darkness. For most of the games, the offense and defense couIdn't get it together. A special thanks to Sue Shafroth, our dedicated manager. Best of luck to the underclassmen next year, under the coaching of Gail Fraser, and thank you for a fun season! bf.w55P4f3 ,J
