Rather, they serve to energize him and increase his impulse to ambition and achieve- ment. Throughout his years at Suffield Academy he has given a great deal of himself to the students and the fac- ulty. He is admired by some, held in awe by others, and respected by all. His warmth, friendship and willingness to help are rare qualities which few men pos- sess. He has led us through our hard times. We appreciate this unending faith in us as a class and his respect for us as individuals. We proudly and happily dedicate the 1978 Pioneer , 1 .iw .l. A man lives not only his personal life as an individual, but also, conscioulsy or unconsciously, the life of his epoch or his contempories. He may be vaguely conscious of the deficencies of his epoch or find them prejudicial to his moral well-being. All sorts of personal aims, ends, hopes, prospects, hover before the eyes of the individual and out of these he derives the impulse to ambition and achievement. - Thomas Mann, The Magic Mountain ,1 1 fn. Technically it is a two-day program of mental and physical obstacles that are to be tackled by each member of a group, but also it is an unpres- sured way of breaking the ice among new stu- dents, who may feel slightly unsure of themselves in their new situation. By stressing individual partici- pation and team unity, the program brings the teammates together as they work to achieve their goal. Whether going through an obstacle course in the pouring rain or pitching a tent while blindfolded, all who participate walk away with a greater under- standing of one another. Aside from this, a state of community grows between students and teachers that enhances a free and expressive learning experi- ence. In addition, it sets the mood for the new year at Suffield. It gets you in gear to accept new chal- lenges and meet them head-on with a winning atti- tude. Although orientation in itself is demanding, it lets new students ease their way into life at Suffield. lt's a great way to get to know other new students, teachers, and yourself a little bit better. zo l Spirit is rising - finally! Pep Rally A little help from the tiger - drawn by Karen Napolitano. lt's really fun! C'mon gang, more! We'll get you yet, teachers! Varsity Football 5 2 1st row: B. Green, Stremmel, Salvio, Goodman, Sanzo Ccaptj, Georges, Renner Arneill Coach Corbiere 2nd row Goldbach, Bosworth, Walker, Trudeau, Schneider, Mayo, Bitting, Westlake, Polisky Coach Waskiewicz 3rd row Hawkins, Watson, Senatore, August, McKenzie, Gunn, M. Higgins, F. Drapeau Boas Blessis Scott Coach DeSalvo, Coach Giguere, This year's team closed out its 5-2 season with a powerful 28-13 win over Hopkins. As usual, the Tigers scored most of their points in the first half. The team did better than the record indicates. During the entire season, the offense was led by the rushing of Jim Scott. He was Suffield's leading rusher with 832 yards on 82 carries. He also led Suffield in total points with 92. But the other members of the offensive backfield were also valuable contributors: Joe Nlayo, 305 yards on 50 carries, 36 points, Dave Senatore, 317 yards on 53 carries, 12 points, and Greg Georges, 340 yards on 43 carries, 20 points. Even though Suffield was strictly a run- ning team, whenever we passed, there was always someone to receive. The defense was one of the strongest points of the team. lt was led by a strong line, hard-hitting linebackers and a quick and versatile secondary. Overall, the team had a successful season and enjoyed many memorable team efforts. The team would like to thank the great dedication of the coaching staff: head coach Wask- iewicz and his assistant coaches, coach Corbiere, who was in charge of the linebackers, while coach DeSalvo had the backs, both offensive and defensive. Also the team would like to thank coach Giguere, who said, You ain't a team until you all work together, and at that moment I'II be proud enough to hold up that sign of victory which says 'TEAlVl'l Boys Varsity Soccer 7-3-3 1st row Humphrey Giordano K Stone LeMay Aaron fco captb, J. Adib'Samii, Kalali Hutchinson 2nd row Coach Gooch C McCullagh Borowick, Brubacher, Davol, Krogh, Meyer, Linsley, J. lt looked dismal in the beginning, and even worse after the first four games, but then we all pulled together. Our season could not have been salvaged if it had not been for the continuous support of the entire team. When John Humphrey was injured, Dave Hutchin- son always filled in with outstanding clutch saves. The season was marked by several exciting games: against Deerfield, and especially against Loomis. A win over Loomis would give us a winning record. lt was a tough game, and, after trailing 1-O, the team pulled it out and won 2-1. Our final game against Hopkins was a 3-0 Suffield vic- tory, giving us the best Varsity Soccer record in four years. The co-captains want to say Thanks for putting up with us, but it was all worth it in the end. Boys' Cross Country 1-9 1st row: Kaplan, R. Stanley, Fogg, Kheirkhah, Viola, Wolfe, Forauer, M. Brown, Berry. 2nd row: Coach Compton, J. Green, Kieger, Rarus, Benedict, Bergeron, Cahill Ccaptb, Barnard, McCrea, Wilson, Bryans, Aurichio, Grieb, Coach Glover. These are few experiences harder to take than a long losing season. But this long losing season had some bright spots. First of all, there was the courageous and good humored leadership of seniors Bill Cahill, Steve Ber- geron and Pete Barnard. Secondly, we never quit and we never gave up, we took the best we had into every race and did the best we could. The third bright spot grows directly out of the second. Next year we start the season with eight tough and experienced veterans who are hungry to win. And that's a tar cry from the way we started this season, with one really experienced and one slightly experienced run- ner. Those who ran up those long painful hills of this building year will remember each other with respect and admiration, for what- ever this team's record, its members: Captain Bill Cahill, Nlatt Grieb, Andy Rarus, Steve Ber- geron, Pete Barnard, Louis Aurichio, Bill Kieger and Brian Kaplan each won their own private races. For the first time at Suffield Academy, girls' cross country competed in a full schedule of meets against established prep schools. Under the coaching of Gordon Glo- ver and David Compton and the consistent running of Jennifer Starr, Nina Harrop, Trish Pohanka, Cheryl Glass and co-cap- tains Lisa Keney and Helen Arnquist, victo- ries were posted against Taft and Kings- wood. This year's team established its posi- tion as a highly competitive team for the future by competing in an invitational race hosted by Suffield in which nine teams com- peted, and by competing in the Girls' New England Championship held at Choate. Looking ahead to next year, returning run- ners Starr and Harrop should pace the team. This year the team showed a great deal of sportsmanship towards other teams and an extreme interest in the growing trend of girls' competitive running at Suf- field. Varsity Field Hockey 3-7-1 1st row: Shaffer, Rockwell, Sheehan, Bogle, Fogg. 2nd row: Gondarowski, Hayden, Coach Fraser, McDaniel, Dee. 3rd row: Heffernan, Stewart, Longo, Brown, H. Smith. The field hockey team had a disappointing season this year. Many games were rained out, we could only really play on the fields the first two weeks of school. Parents' Day was an exciting game, winning over Williston 5-1, Another victory took place with 18 sec- onds left. Lisa Longo put in the winning goal over Pom- fret. Much improvement in Donna Hayden's game. . . The culmination of the season came against Mac- Duffie in a very exciting game which ended in a tie due to darkness. For most of the games, the offense and defense couIdn't get it together. A special thanks to Sue Shafroth, our dedicated manager. Best of luck to the underclassmen next year, under the coaching of Gail Fraser, and thank you for a fun season! bf.w55P4f3 ,J Girls' Varsity Soccer 4-8-1 1st row: Mackey, L. McCullagh, Gore fcapt.J, Gallup fcaptj, Samuelson, Workman. 2nd row: J. Lewis, Napolitano, McCormack, Kennedy, Dustin, Rogers, Salius. 3rd row: Coach Downes, Magauran, Tucker, Buice, Drummond, K. Adib-Samii. The girls' varsity soccer team was built largely on character and spirit, which developed greatly from our new coach, T. Stephen Downes sir, There were no really outstanding indi- vidual players, so the entire squad had to work as a team to improve and develop skills in order to have a successful sea- son, although early injuries hurt us physically and morally. We lost our first game against Ethel Walker due to a lack of experienced players, but Coach Downes pulled the team together and we were able to defeat a strong Hotchkiss team 1-O, and Wilbraham!Monson 5-O. The team was discouraged by a strong, overly aggressive Kings- wood team, resulting in a 2-O loss. We won two of the next six games. In the re-match with Ethel Walker, the team showed much improvement and its ever- present spirit, losing by only one goal. Due to the disappointing loss to Ethel Walker, Suffield could not quite pull itself together to play at its full poten- tial against Agawam and Wilbra- hamfllllonson. Hopefully, a bet- ter season is in line for next year, because the team is losing only four starters. Thanks to Coach Downes for his continuous sup- port and understanding. And we cannot forget our great man- ager, Cindy Workman. Where is the water, Cindy? Thanks and good luck! . 11 1 127 C Y .,g..t' Boys' JV Soccer 4-7-2 1st row: D. Smith, Cormier, Vardakas, K. He stimulated and moved usp made the music come alive with his vivid descriptions and techni- cal mastery. We learned that any kind of music can be appreci- ated by anyone and that the beauty is there, if we just care to lis- ten. His two weeks with us were all too short, and he leaves us not only with memories which we shall have for a long time, but also with a deeper appreciation for the pianist's art. lijll Amer Ml-TWA' I Q05-2. The team as a whole witnessed improvement in skills, and even witnessed some new records which hopefully, and in a very real sense hopefully, will or will not stand for a while. The season began with victo- ries over Kingswood and Willi- ston Academies, until our team met the experience and talent of Deerfield JV's, Hopkins, Avon, Mt. Hermon, Loomis, Hotchkiss, and Kent Academies for a final two and eight season. Fortu- nately only three people are graduating, thus Suffield can look to the future as a new team emerges from the many fresh- men and sophomores on the team this year. 1st row: Howell, N. Freshman Vera Chrisman broke four individual records in the 200 yd. individual medley, 100 yd. freestyle, 500 yd. freestyle, and the 100 yd. backstroke. The girls' 200 medley relay record was broken with Chrisman, Bishop, Fogg and Claiborne. Bishop also set an individual record in the 100 yd. breast stroke. High point winners for the season were Chrisman, Fogg, Shafroth. Others were Bishop, Samuelson, Tucker, and Landers. This year's team had a great deal of potential and with the extraordinary time, energy, and patience of Adrian Corbiere, the girls' swim team pulled it through another tough season. Boys' The 1977-78 Varsity Basketball team had a very successful season. Before going home for Christmas vacation, the team jumped to a 5-0 record. Three of the victories came in the Kingswood Invi- tational Tournament, where the Tigers brought home three firsts, a first place trophy, the first KIT crown for Coach Kinne, and the first for Suffield. From there, the team out-hustled, out-played, and out-scored its opponents to a 17-1 record at the end of the regular season. From here, the team entered the Class B New England State Championships, where they defeated Trinity-Pawling 67- 52 to cap off SuffieId's best basketball season ever. Pohanka, Karanian, Dustin, H. Smith, Mackey, Arnquist. This year's Varsity Basketball team had its defi- nite ups and downs throughout the season. The beginning of the season started out with three quick wins. We defeated Williston, Willbraham!Monson and Ethel Walker by a large margin. Our first full week back at school from Christmas vacation proved to be one of the toughest of the season. We lost five games in a row. We lost to Mount Hermon, Loomis, Kingswood, Pomfret, and Canterbury because of injuries, sickness, and not enough team effort to fill the holes where we were lacking. Finally we got our team together and won five games. Our first win was a massacre against Berkshire. Then we played Hopkins and won a well-deserved game. Suf- J . field was losing at the half and played a tough 3 ff .1 sris' defensive game, defeating them by one point. We next met WilbrahamlMonson once again and had another easy win. One of our long awaited wins was against Westminster. Suffield had lost to Westmin- fx ster the past two years and with seven of the twelve Q- Q ,, players we defeated them 31-26. We also beat Miss QV'-.' Porter's 34-23. Our last three games were tough -f V ones against Kingswood, Hotchkiss and an unde- feated Taft team. AII three we lost, but not without a ' good hard effort. Our season ended up with an 8-8 record. The seniors wish all the luck to next year's team, and also thanks to Coach Wasky for every- thing. 45 Varsity Hockey 10-4 HOME if 1 ' f' , A 1st row: P. The team wh started building in '74 has become very dedicated and disciplined gr This year's offense showed trer dous skill and scoring ability. It sisted of Bill Stone, T. Fl. Varsity Wrestling 9-1 Again this year's Varsity Wrestling team led by Coach Frank Peraino had a very successful season. Despite the early season loss of its Captain and also state finalist Brian Green, the team had it together to defeat all but one oppo- nent. Strong team performances came against Deerfield, Choate, Kingswood, and Taft, as the team showed its adapt- ability to a variety of surprises. The Western New England Championships again went down to the wire as Suffield just missed its 3rd consecutive championship, finishing a strong second by just two points. In a fine team effort, four wrestlers avenged earlier losses as Veseskis and Adler took third, Giordano and Young took sec- onds, and Bergeron, Georges and Mayo closed out unde- feated seasons with championships. The following weekend Georges, Bergeron and Nlayo added New England Champi- onships, and for the third year in a row, Coach Peraino came home with a National Champ in Joe Mayo, with Bergeron placing a strong fourth in a tough class. Characteristically this team went out on the mat and went after people. Peraino's teams are known for their aggres- siveness, conditioning and season-long improvement. Though falling iust short of our goals the team certainly has to rank as superior, another in the school's fine tradition that holds a 11 1-6-2 record over the last twelve years. Riflery 4-6 1st row: Wolfe, Forauer, Piccus, Swanson. 2nd row: Brady, Coach Banks, Pease, Trudeau. 3rd row: Johnson Schweitzer, Nath, Murphy. This season, riflery had its ups and downs. We started with five returning men, Andy Forauer, Bob Piccus, Dan Pease, Tim Johnson, and Phil Hamon who were joined by Matt Grieb, Al Trudeau, Mike Swanson, Marc Schweitzer, Tony Murphy, Jim Viola, Scott Learned, Todd Wolfe, and Stacy Nath. We lost a close match to Loomis by one point which was quite a surprise to Coach Banks. The season was frustrating due to our relative lack of success, cancelled meets, and sickness. But this season also saw the emergence of some new talent, which offers promise for the future. Captained by Bill Joyce, the team members participated in three interscholastic meets. losing twice to Hotchkiss and Salisbury and once to Berkshire, but gaining a satisfying dual-meet victory against Kingswood. Our schedule was rounded out by participation in three citizens' races: the Selleck Hill 10k C294 startersj, the Cummington Farms 10k C162 startersj and the 15k Cumming- ton Farms Bread race C375 startersj. These races gave us a good deal of experience, if not success. Returning skiers Rod Frechette, John Hart, Chris Bromson and Bill Joyce were helped by newcomers Josh Smith and Ken Coelho, both of whom made substantial individual progress. Dave Harding, Roger Bisaillon, and Sam Orr also helped the team effort in several races. The season was rewarding in several respects, but next season we look forward to competing in a new ski league, and to the return of several strong skiers. The 1978 Ski Tream was hampered by bad weather and a lack of depth. It was an incredible winter which saw the start of the season delayed several weeks by, of all things, too much snow. The level of Suffield's competitiveness improved as the season progressed. By the time we reached the Berkshire Ski League Championships in Nlarch, the team was skiing reasonably well. The fortunes of the team seemed to rise and fall on Tim Scudder's suc- cess. We needed a strong, consistent effort and in many areas were unable to produce. A conscien- tious building program should help in the future. Despite our disappointing showing in competition, the efforts and desire shown by all involved made the year a good one. The offense was led by co-MVP Larry Krough with a .365 average, Captain Bud Dra- peau with fourteen FlBl's, and co-MVP Mark Westlake who led the team in six offensive catgories, including a lusty .512 average and reaching base an incredible forty-two times in thirteen games. Solid defense kept the team in many a ballgame, catcher Chris Coates, first baseman Clay Gunn C93 putoutsj, shortstop John Giordano, third baseman Krogh C38 assistsj, and centerfielder Dave Senatore were particulary outstanding. The mound staff had a great depth led by Krogh with a 5-1 record, 55 strikeouts in 41 innings, and a sparkling 1.29 earned run average. Westlake C2-OJ, Drapeau C3-15, and Andy Rarus C1 -OJ all pitched well. Contributing to this fine season in so many ways were infielders Tom Killam, and Steve Cotnoir, along with outfielders Reid Flenner, Bob Stanley, Fran Figueroa, Chuck McCullagh, and Joe O'Brien. A mixture of returning lettermen, players from JV's, and new freshmen combined over the course of the spring to play close, excit- ing matches, and reach some significant per- sonal goals. An early narrow 5-4 win over Westminister set the tone for the season, made possible by Bard Stephens' come-from-behind wins at both sin- gles and doubles. Hopkins fell by a 6-3 count, in part victim to Todd Wilson's effective serve and net game at third singles. Louis Aurichio was a steady performer at number five, contributing to decisive team victories against Pomfret, Willi- ston and Wilbraham, and surprising everyone by hitting overheads in the court toward the end of the season. Peter Barnard was an effective leader as team captain, while Dave Spitzler's ability to win under pressure brought him victo- ries against players from League Champion Kingswood and powerful Avon Old Farms at number six. Suddenly we dropped to an even 4-4 with two big losses to Hotchkiss and a very tough Avon team. We then joined together for outstanding wins over Mount Hermon, 6-1, and Windsor Locks H.S., 4-3. We were then 6-4, heading into the toughest course in Connecticut for a tri-match with Hopkins and Choate, both of which we lost, ending our season 6- 6. The season was interrupted by a tournament, the Kingswood Invitational, where we finished a dissap- pointing seventh out of ten teams, losing out on sec- ond by only fifteen strokes. The team consisted of seven players, number one and two men switching off between Mike Fioroni and Bob Gladchuck. Now, like any overanxious parental figure, I do t want to send you out there without all the help an give you. So, as we part, let me offer a few eces of advice - some borrowed from the sages, me Cfor better or worsej my own. ould advise you to. . . Do what you want with your life, but do it the best at you can. Keep your sense of humor and laugh at life. member, as someone once said, life isn't so bad en you consider the alternative. Be true to yourself. Hold on to what you believe, tfor heaven's sake at least try to understand what hers believe. Develop a faith to help you define the chaos ound you. Remember your teachers with affection and toler- ion, like yourselves, they will appear more reason- le with age. Use college well. lt is not supposed to be an end- ss Woodstock Festival, nor an agency for social tion, nor a hospital for group therapy. Keep faith with your friends - and at times ease think seriously about how you can best sup- rt a friend. Be kind to your neighbors, keep your stereo vol- e down. Contribute to the Suffield Academy Annual Fund, en if it's only a little bit. When you are going out to a party and your parent ys, have a good time, avoid saying don't tell e what to do. Always respect excellence in all its forms . . . Get to places on time. lf you think about it, it's one of the ways you accord respect to other people. Keep faith with America. With all its imperfec- tions, this is still the greatest nation on earth. Remember that its flaws are those of imperfect men and women, and better men and women can make it better. Be open to love, care for one another, keep in mind that to beloved, you must be lovable. Recognize that there can never be any significant growth or maturing without pain or friction. lf you have nothing to say, don't ever let anyone persuade you to say it. Try to share more, you will find that you multiply your blessings by dividing them. Learn, if you have not already done so, that the real pleasure and satisfaction in life comes from doing things for others and with others. Always remember that your education at Suffield has tried to teach you not what to be, but how to be. I would only add that you have been an outstand- ing class, and we shall remember you fondly. And as individuals, we are going to miss you. We hope you will come and see us when you can, keep us posted about what you are doing, and let us help you when- ever we can. Good luck to you all, you have our love, our best wishes, and our continuing interest. Commencement Day May 28, 1978 gm X...'N CXQYQV S 4 Senior Superla tives 1 9 78 ff., 9 fa ie. It is not every day that we are needed. Not indeed that we personally are needed. Others would meet the case very well, if not better. To all mankind they were addressed, those cries for help still ringing in our ears! But at this place, at this moment of time, all mankind is us, whether we like it or not. Let us make the most of it before it is too late! Let us represent worthily for once the foul brood to which a cruel fate consigned us! What do you say? It is true that when with folded arms we weigh the pros and cons we are no less a credit to our species. The tiger bounds to the help of his congeners without the least reflexlon, or else he slinks away into the depths of the thickets. But that is not the question. What are we doing here, that is the question. And we are blessed in this, that we know the answer. Yes, in this immense confusion one thing alone is clear. We are waiting for Godot to come - or for night to fall. We have kept our appointment and that's an end to that. We are not saints, but we have kept our appoint- ment. How many people can boast as much? All l know is that the hours are long, under these conditions, and con- strained us to beguile them with proceedings which - how shall I say - which may at first seem unreasonable, until they become a habit. You may say it is to prevent our reason from foundering. No doubt. But has it not been straying in the night without end of the abyssal depths? That's why I sometimes wonder. You following my reasoning? Estragon: We are all born mad. Some remain so. Pozzo: Help! l'll pay you! Estragon: How much? Pozzo: One hundred francs! Estragon: lt's not enough. Vladimir: l wouldn't go so far as that. Estragon: You think it's enough? Vladimir: No, I mean so far as to assert that l was weak in the head when l came into the world. But that is not the question. Pozzo: Two hundred! Vladimir: We wait. We are bored. No, don't protest, we are bored to death, there's no denying it. Good A diversion comes and what do we do? We let it got waste.
