the Freshman Class We were fortunate rn havrng among us the good wrll Ambassador from Mexico Vrctor Weeds Vales whose abrlrty to skrp soccer practice was the envy of all Drck Leonards psychology course falras General Screncey started the year off wrth a shock As the Englrsh Department head we were fortunate to have jungle jrm whose spellrng was atrocrous and whose grammar was worse Casual Gordon saw that thrs drdn t last long Pmkys Latrn I proved to be an excellent course rn logrstrcal trarnrng the merrts of Fox Company and the faults of Easy Company Through the benevolence of Sandy Sanderson we were able to spend a cloudy afternoon rn the lush green mountains of Massachusetts DeMaro and Ko walczyk capsized whrle teaching those uninformed about canoeing the proper way to handle the craft We concluded the day wrth a harr rarsrng soft ball game rn a nearby swamp In 1955 we saw a lot of new recrurts fillrng up the ranks Harlrng from Larchmont came Bloom rngdale Krensky who rn hrs more undesrrable moods alras jerry From Wethersfreld came Cars Lepper to rntrrgue everyone wrth hrs automobile know how Drck Leonard resumed hrs psychology course un der a new alras Brology By the way what ever hap pened to Lrttle DoeLrne 7 Latrn agarn proved to be trme out for a lrttle braggrng The Coachs French Class eventuated rn a hot contest between Amplrfrer jennrngs and Bloom rngdale Krensky to see who could out wrt jerry Durrng thrs year we were very unfortunate rn havrng to say goodbye to one of Tvrlles delegates Sam Peraro whose golfing abrlrty was not apprecrated by Jungle jrm Under the able gurdance of Dewey Reynolds the lrghtwerght Soccer team frnrshed wrth a glorrous sea son of no defeats Sandys posrtron was serrously threatened The wrnter term came and so drd our prospective stars Kowalczyk rn basketball DeMaro rn wrestlrng accompanied by Gordon and Singer rn hockey Sprrng came and left and we completed our sec ond year at Suffield The Fall term of 1955 found us rn mrd stream wrth a srnk or swrm ultrmatum Slrde Rule Sammy s power packed Chemrstry assrgnments began submerg rng many the hrst week whrle Leo was baptrzed by re The class athletrc talent was soon drscovered as Bob Daly The Bear and Ernre Rrchards joined The Anrmal under DD Prnky and The Wrpe On the lower fields there was to be heard the plarntrve calls of antrcrpate and contain the play as the old Scotchman broke rn hrs newly acqurred talent Guyer was looking good and wrth the addrtron of Brownre Westre and Eddre the backfield hopes were hrgh The Fall term soon passed rnto memorres but not without such memorable events as Bullet Bob s butt room the after hours drscussron groups and Ser lrn s low slung Cadrllac Chrrstmas vacatron saw Brddy and Rrchardo Kahn threatened by second floor Fuller and two cartons of Chesterfields Whrle above The Coach was makrng a valrant defense agarnst firecrackers B B guns and Brran Webster Bullet Bob made no secret of the fact that currency was of the greatest necessity and that French shrrts were worth more after he had worn them Green Sneakers proved worthless on the floors of Memorral and frre escapes rcrer than ever The wrnter term saw Locko comrng out of the physrcs lab and onto the basketball court The Bear teams and Daly when he wasn t scoring pornts was addrng to what looked lrke one of the Tigers better basketball teams Bullet Bobs water polo team looked promising although the apparent necessrty of lungs became more evident The Animal led hrs mat men through therr first ofhcral season which proved to be very successful as Byers Gordon and Fungr provrded depth and pornts for the team Satgeant Lepper Frenchre Ernre and a quret lad whose name was belreved to be Sherman reported to Dewey for Hockey Bromes Arena offered not the best rce but the boys managed Squeaks and groans were heard as J C E pulled and pushed hrs barbells and paved hrs way home Knuke was rackrng up accrdents as qurckly as Zrmmy gained pornts and occasronal crres of where s Ferg were heard As japan had drsbanded the Kama kazre planes Saff took on the role of a student and proved to us that brarns do not necessarrly accompany brawn As we started down the stretch we began to learn that Hartford partres had to be left at 10 00 Saturday nrghts srnce drrvrng condrtrons were slrppery As a O , , . , . , fr . . . - . From this time on Suiheld dominated the play. Daly on a cutback ran 45 yards for a Suilield touchdown and a few minutes later Daly crashed over for another T.D. Hopkins broke into the scoring column with an end run late in the game. 5--Ch-gn A The followlng week the Orange and Black was host to Kingswood School With the Suffield spirit all fired up for the game they seemed to be the superior team and proved this with a 13 6 victory Suffields offense seemed to roll over the Kingswood defense with great line play by DeMa1o Melkle and great running by Daly Wright and Richards Smith scored the first touchdown on a pass from jack Locke and Daly scored on a dive play Kingswood couldn t crack the Suffield defense until the last 30 seconds of the game when they scored on a pass play The following week the Tigers travelled to Kent where they met a stronger and bigger Kent squad and were defeated for the first time From the beginning the superior ity of the Kent team was obvious Yet just as it seemed they would score the Suffield defense tightened up But we couldn t hold and late in the first quarter Kent scored its first T D Despite great defensive work by the Suffield line starring DeMa1o Meikle and Long the Kent linemen opened up large holes and the backs broke into the Suflield secondary continually. Kent undefeated in two years piled up three touchdowns in the first half. High- lighting the first half and also shocking Kent was the 85 yd. run back of a kick-off by Bob Daly. In the second half Kent again rolled up many yards and a large score. Suffield scored once more when Dick Wright went over from the 15 yd. line. The play was set up by the plunges of Ernie Richards. The rest of the game vias dominated by Kent. There were some fine running plays in the Sufiield backfield and a couple of 25 yards punt returns by Singer. This game meant more than a defeat for the Orange and Black, for they suffered injuries to key players Locke, Richards and Daly. The following week they played their biggest rival, Loomis. Nevertheless, it was obvious that Loomis had come to Suffield only to face one of the most determined teams Sufiield had ever fielded. ln the early minutes of the game, Loomis ran a split T-offense quite well but the Tigers held. Led by Bob Daly, Richard Wright and Ernest Richards, and the vicious blockers in the Suffield line, the Tigers unfolded an unstoppable offense that rolled for 50 yards to a touchdown. In this march, Locke ran and handed off to his backs Wright, Richards, and Daly who finally scored on a cutback. Loomis, however, came back with a fast touchdown and tied up the ball game. Sufiield once again turned on the power and Wright scored on a line plunge. In the second half, a determined Loomis squad took the field but faced a very spirited Suffield Team. Loomis late in the third quarter tied up the ball game on a 50 yd. end run. The rest of the quarter was played with great caution by both teams. Late in the fourth quarter, the Tigers exploded and Daly ran over for the touchdown and a 20-14 victory. Suffield came out of the Loomis game with no new injuries. The team looked as though it would reach a physical peak for the Trinity-Pawling game. The Tigers got off to a fast start scoring a couple of touchdowns in the first quarter. With a superb defense, the Trinity-Pawling team found the going tough, but the defense didn't hold and their team came up with two touchdowns in the second quarter. Sufiield held a one point margin 15-12 at half time. This lead looked good, but Suffield suffered the loss of its two key linemen DeMaio and Meikle, Taking the field in the second half Suffield had two holes and Trinity-Pawling soon found this out, rolling all over the Suffield defense and piling up three touchdowns for a nnal score of 55-12. In the season s finale an injury riddled Suffield eleven faced Wilbraham However everybody s morale was high since the boys wanted to set a modern record of winning The Tigers put themselves in the scoring column in the first quarter on an option play with Locke handing off to Daly for the T D Wilbraham rolled right back and scored on a 50 yard end run This looked like it might be the final score but in the second quarter Wilbraham scored once again giving them a 14 7 lead The Tigers caught fire in the fourth quarter and kept control of the ball In the dying minutes Ernie Richards bolted from the two yard line after many successful short plunges Kicking off Suffield recovered the ball and made a threat of scoring again but the clock ran out and the game ended in a 14 14 tie Ends Paul Smith and john jenckes handling offense and defense with Williams playing defensive end contributed much to the team At tackles DeMaio and Meikle played both offense and defense and continually opened holes for the backs or stopped the opposition with fine tackles As guards jim Long and Andy Hooker starred while Sumner Samuels and Duell alternated the center position The offensive backfield of Jack Locke Wright Daly at halfback and Richards at fullback carried the brunt of the attack DeMa1o and Daly were fine Co Captains Their exceptional playing abilities patience coolness in tense situations courage and ability to hold the team together accounted greatly for the success of the team Credit must also be given to the coaches Mr Wiper Mr Waskiewicz and Mr Picard Their help and encouragement at all times will always be remembered by the team Thanks also must be given to Mr Pendleton managers Lindemeyer and Lothmann and the entire team for making the season what it was sf-fs-i C 'W' xii-u :aw ,g,,-av v 7 ' ! , . . . . The final score was 3-0. The Sufiield squad played the Deerfield eleven on practically even terms in the first half but the home eleven dominated play in a hard-fought second half. As the second half began Deerfield with its larger bench was able to substitute freely against a tiring Suffield team and boot in two of its goals. They continued their assault and tallied once again in the final period of play. Harvey Greenhalghs brilliant work in the goal was largely responsible for a scoreless first half. The Tigers surge at the close of the second period was repeated at the start of the last quarter but the team was unable to capitalize on frequent scoring changes. On October 6 the team met Kingswood School at home to face defeat once again by a 2-0 score. The Tigers went on the field with great determination to defeat the team from West Hartford but the breaks were against the Suflield booters when they made 22 attempts without success. The Wyverns took advantage of the Sufheld breaks and scored twice on four attempts. Outstanding play by the entire backfield kept the ball in Kingswood territory throughout the first 30 minutes of play but the line was unable to score. MQ '-amrM dlW' A.. On October 10, the team met Avon Old Farms here to win with an impressive victory of 4-1. In the first quarter the score was even, both teams attacking and defending in turn. Avon scored first, but did not keep the lead for long. Less than one minute later, Ed Guyer, Sufhelds forward, trapped a pass from Howard Gordon and blasted the ball into the net, The third quarter proved most rewarding for the Tigers as Paul Rutherford and Howard Gordon scored. In the fourth Avon struggled hard, but the Suffield defense played exceptionally well. After defeating a spirited Avon team the Suffield booters once again exhibited their fine offensive plays as they trampled over a slow moving Monson eleven. The trickster of the day was Ed Guyer as he kicked in a pair of goals for the Tigers. The third goal came on a aggressive attack set up by Howard Gordon as he came in with a hard blast. After a penalty kick by Paul Rutherford in the third quarter, Coach Sanderson was able to send in the reserves to hold the Monson eleven for the remainder of the quarter The Tiger s starting eleven appeared once again in the final quarter and immediately scored on a kick by David jellison The day was made complete by the hne offensive play exhibited by Ted Rosenberg and the all around team spirit On October 17 the Suffield booters traveled to Choate for the defensive battle of the season The game ended in a 0 O tie Both clubs played spirited soccer This was the most aggressive contest ever played under Coach Sanderson Ted Rosenberg almost had his first goal of the season on a hard blast which bounced off the goal post and hung in front of the goal waiting to be booted but the line was unable to reach it in time Choate had their opportunity to score on a penalty kick but this was deflected by Harvey Green halgh The Tigers third win came at the hands of a spirited Hopkins team with a impressive 2 O victory Ed Guyer put his mates out in front as he tallied early in the hrst quarter This lead was aided by the outside left Bob Houghton as he booted in his first goal of the season This concluded the scoring for the game although both squads had further opportunities to score Ar Williston however the Suffield team that had worked with engine like precision burned its bearings The Tigers were eager to take on the Williston team but it proved to be a bad day as they went down to defeat 3 0 The game began with the losing of the .653 -44.4 '1uiU4,L,'.,,. toss whrch meant gomg agarnst the wrnd Thrs proved to be a brg factor rn the game for all of the Wrlhston goals were scored as they played wnth the wmd After Wrllrston scored therr first goal rn the openmg perrod the Suffield booters never seemed to get started agarn Suflield suffered nts thrrd setback of the season bowmg to a scrappy Loomis team by the score of 5 2 rn an overtrme The Loomns team scored the flrst two goals early rn the first perxod but Ed Guyer carne back wrth two to tue the score The remamder of the game was played on practrcally even terms wrth nerther team scorxng The overtnme proved to be too much for the Suffield team as the Loomns team scored wrth only mmutes remarnrng to end the game wrth a 3 2 vrctory The Trgers made the long trip up to Kent only to find ram They had to wade out onto the field but they were determmed to defeat the powerful Kent combme The srtuatron looked drm as the Kent eleven booted home 3 of nts 5 goals rn the Hrst half to Suflields one Ed Guyer tallred the lone goal before the half trme whnstle sounded In the thnrd quarter the Kent team tallred twrce to make thmgs even drmmer The Trgers pulled themselves together rn the fourth quarter and scored three goals on blasts by Rosenberg Rutherford, and Welch However thns drdnt prove to be enough as the final whistle sounded And so the season finxshed wrth the record standing at four wms five losses and two tres Cofaptarn Ed Guyer was always the playmaker of the lme as he drrbbled and bang ed hrs way through the field Otherwrse the strength of the team lay rn the backfield whrch was led by Co-Captarn Ed Kowalczyk as he drsplayed judgement trmrng and endurance Brown West and Rutherford were also outstandmg rn thxs field Greenhalgh proved a very competent goalre wrth Ralph Krensky as hrs reserve In the forward lme Jay Tompkms dnd some very fine playmg at rrght wmg Co Captarns Kowalczyk and Guyer plus Brown West Ferguson Houghton Rutherford Rosenberg Green Welch jellxson jobes and Szyrnanskn all leave thrs year Bogart Lewxt Tompkms Sundel Cordns Nye Greenhalgh, Dragat and Gordon should form a good nuqleus for the new team and to them and to Coach Sanderson whose untrrmg and eager mterest as a coach has always rnsprred the team the retrrmg team wrshes the very best of luck LA.. l I L 1 ' 3 3 1 , . 1 , . , . . . , . 7 . . , s ' 9 7 l . . . .
