I FOOTBA The varsity football squad of this year exhibited char- acter, sportsmanship, and a team spirit which made all of Sufheld Academy and the followers of the team proud. The season was not a successful one in terms of games won and lost, but the team represented the school well. Head coach, james S. Williams, assisted by coaches, Donald R. Rawson, and Edward M. Banks, developed the Sufheld Pioneers into a speedy split-T- offensive unit, which was to score in every game, and into a stubborn defensive eleven. Though closing the season with one w scores that the opposition won by were not overwhelming. The Pioneers entered the contest with only ten days of practice, but showed impressive strength both offensively and defensively. Suffield struck pay-dirt first when co-captain Lenny Erff culminated a Suffield march by smashing over from the Loomis twenty-yard line. The game then became a defensive battle with Suffield holding the heavier Loomis team to a stand- still. 35 Before the half ended Loomls scored on an intercepted pass and the score was 6 6 Loomis wetght and longer practice told the story in the second half they tallied twice and emerged victorious 20 6 Our second game of the season was with Avon Old Farms on our home grndrron The Orange and Black completely outclassed the vxsxtors and won handrly 28 6 Suffield s first score came when Lenny Erff pitched wrde to Jim Krayeske who weaved to the five yard lme where he was tackled He lateraled to Gary Conklin who carried the pngskrn the rest of the way A Suffield pass from Erff to Lewandowskr accounted for another score before the half In the second half Erff tallied twtce and co captain Dick Gaull uprooted an Avon ballcarrrer in the end zone for two more points Suffields blockmg and defensive work were sharp throughout the contest An undefeated and power laden Wllllston Academy v1s1ted Suffield before a Parents Day crowd The Williston squad was big fast and deep 1n reserves They proved to be too strong and we dropped our second game to a superior team Wtllnston s offense clicked early rn the first half and the v1s1tors took a commanding lead Finding Wrlltston stub born defensively Conklm took to the air and connected with Erff for our hrst score In the second half it was again a neat pass from Conklin this time to Lewandowskl who eluded a host of tacklers on his way for the score The game ended wlth Williston vnctorrous 26 13 The Orange and Black traveled to Wllbraham a seven point underdog The Pioneers played one of thelr better games of the season and salvaged a 7 7 tie out of a gruellmg battle Wllbraham was first to score and took the lead in the opening period Suffield scored in the second period on a magnificent fifty yard run by Steve Mackay to the Wrlbraham one yard line On the first down Lenny Erff spoiled Wllbrahams goal line stand and bulled over for the touchdown The pressure was on and jim Krayeske split the uprrghts wrth the all lmportanr extra point The remalnder of the game was marked by brilliant defensrve play on the part of both teams especially rn the lxnes Suffield s lme led by our two big tackles Walt Steuernagel and Charlie Strrd stopped many Wrlbraham thrusts and enabled The Pioneers to ne the1r favored opponents Suffield played host to a confident undefeated once tied Wooster School in a highly contested game It was close all the way wlth both teams playing hard football The Orange and Black wasted no time rn gettxng started Erff ran the kickoff back to the Wooster four yard lme and a few plays later went over for the score Krayeske added the extra point and Suffield had an early 7 0 lead Runnrng from a well drilled wing T the Wooster School rallied to score three touchdowns and an extra point before the first half ended In the second half our defense strffened and our offense began to roll Mackay culminated a Suffield drive and that made the score 19 13 Trying desperately for the tymg touch down rn the final quarter Erff and Lewandowskl both went over but the plays were nullr fied by penalties The game ended with Wooster victorious 19 13 It was a hard one to lose For the Hnal contest of the season Suffield traveled to New Haven to play a favored Hopkins School Suffield scored first on a 40 yard run by Gary Conklin and threatened to score agaln before the half ended Hopkrns took advantage of two fumbles and pushed across two touchdowns rn the second half Both teams played outstanding football but Suffield wound up on the short end of a 13 6 score Wm over Avon Co Captains Erff and Gaull Football Acuon S' . .. RSITY SOCCER This year's varsity soccer team completed its schedule with two wins. eight losses, and one tie. As in football, the record is not impressive, but the fighting spirit and sportsmanship cannot be denied. This truly is a tribute to Coach Patil Sanderson and to Suffield. The Suflield Academy varsity soccer team's first con- test was a home game on October 3rd against a favored Deerfield eleven. The pioneers played impressively but wound up on the losing end of a 3-1 score. Henry Wliit- field accounted for Suffields only rally of the day. Witli one game under their belts, Suffield played host to Willisttwn on October 7th at Raff Field. The Orange and Black started slowly and were victims of another de- feat. This was the first shutout of the season recorded against the Pioneers. On Parents' Day, Cranwell, undefeated in three years, downed the home team 3-1 to keep its string of wins alive. Ronny Aselton broke Suffield into the scoring column with a magnificent shot from 25 yards out. The Pioneers traveled to Choate and fell victim of an ll-O trouncing under very adverse weather conditions. BASKETBALL We at Suffield are extremely proud of the varsity basketball team. Not only does it have a fine record, but it has also represented the school in creditable fashion. The team is coached by Mr. Raymond Picard who has produced Suffields first winning varsity team in two years. Congratulations both to the boys and Mr. Picard for their fine showing this season. On january 16th, the Pioneers started the season off with a thrilling 75-71 win over a powerful Loomis squad. Suffield showed great form, and a flashy fast break that could not be stopped. Dick Barry accounted for 17 points, Len Erff hit for 16, and joe Lewandowski hooped 14. SufTield's second victim of the season was Deerfield Academy to the tune of 76-68. BASKETBALL Although our j.V. Basketball team didn't have too successful a season, as far as wins go, they had a successful season in another way. Only boasting four wins against eight losses they never gave up, and their opponents knew that they had had a game. This year the j.V. team has gained a great deal in experience and sportsmanship, which is far more important than a long line of wins. The j.V.'s have netted themselves enough ability and experience to make them good prospects for the coming year. The success this year of the j.V.'s was due to two able men and coaches, Mr. Williams and Mr. Sanderson. We think that they have a right to be proud of their team. The Editor and Staff wish them good luck in the future. 46 First row: Dedman, D., Kowalczyk, Stubbings. Second row: Mr. Wlilliams, DeMaio, Boyer, Elliott LIGHTWEIGHT BASKETBALL This year's team could not be called a successful one with regard to the record of one win and six losses, but the spirit was at a high level at every game. Led by Captain Ed Kowalczyk, Frank DeMaio, and David Dedman, the boys lost a pair of games to a superior Longmeadow junior High group, Then traveling to Longmeadow they lost a close game to them. A home series was played with Watkitis School of Hartford. Our boys had the spirit and determination to win, but could not pull the game out of the fire after leading for three quarters in both games and losing by a close score. Traveling to Willistcmn, the Orange and Black lost a tough decision to a much taller and experienced Willisttmn team. The high point of the season came when a previously unbeaten Monson team came to Suflield on a Wedtmesdily afternoon to tangle with the Lightweight Orange and Black. Led by Frank DeMaio with Z1 points, the team played its best game of the season before a near-capacity crowd at our gym. From the opening whistle to the closing gun, DeMaio, Kowalczyk and Stubbings were unstoppable and the Little Orange won its hrst game of the season. The game was highlighted by two spectacular shots, one by Victor Vales and the other by Larry Novick from half court. The 10-man squad, coached by Mr. Willizims and led by Captain Ed Kowalczyk, had a right to be proud. Some of the boys had never played basketball before such as: Victor Vales, Larry Novick, Barry Elliott, and Conrad Boyer. I , ef.:-.5 'l!lQ '-Jaws -5 if ' First row: Pope, Greene, Chapman, Rhame. SWIMMING The varsity swimming team participated in SUFFIELD OPPONENT seven meets this season, and achieved a record 24 51 Avon of one win, live losses, and one tie. The record 33 33 Williston Ur. School, of the swimming team is not particularly im- pressive, but it should be noted here that the 24 40 Hopkins boys swam against stiff competition. Also, last 19 56 Westminster year the swimming team was run on an inform- 14 61 Deerfield al basis. This year the school participated in formal meets. 28 58 Avon Under the watchful eye of Coach Pender- 55 31 Williston Ur. Schoolj grass, the boys all improved steadily. Its purpose is, to create, maintain, and extend good fellowship and school spirit through Suffield Academy . The activities of the Torch Club this year have included a drive for money for various charit- able organizations and the sponsoring of a bus to the Wilbraham-Sufheld basketball game for school fans. The outlook for the rest of the year includes the sponsoring of a speaker, a possible dance, and a party for Torch Club members. Ofhcers for the year are: Everett Bahre, president, Donald Gunn, vice-president, and William Austin, secretary. Our faculty advisor is Mr. James Williams. Eight new members were taken into the club during the Winter Term. They are: Eugene Antonucci, Donald Gale, Richard Gaull, Marshall Sey- mour, Charles Strid, john Taylor, Roger Varnum, and Norman Vester. 50 First row, left to right: Heacock, Pope, Gesler, Mutch. GLEE CLUB The Glee Club opened its 1953-1954 season with a concert for an alumni group in New Haven. This was the first of a series of alumni dinners held in the New England area. Alumni dinners in Meriden and Hartford were also entertained by the Glee Club. Besides singing at various school functions, the Club has performed for the Suffield Rotary Club, and at a joint concert with the MacDufhe School for girls. Either before or after the respective concerts, the club has been treated by the school to a fine dinner and in some cases, movies. After the concert with the MacDuffie School, a dance rounded out the program. Truly a good time was had by all. Our group is led by Mr. Raymond Lindstrom who has an unusually fine background in music. Mr. Lindstrom conducts rehearsals twice a week, and works with the boys on their parts. The Glee Club has been a credit to the school, and has made a good appearance. Each member has a blue blazer bearing the Suffield Seal, and a black and orange necktie which adds a great deal to the appearance of the group. 51 ' Q 5 hx 9 4 5 AA Q 2 ...Q 41 si' isa in 5 he L I 5 4Q359pnff.z- me ' 4' .5f:.zi1-My 1-:Dai ' X ' :gum A I ' 5 H - W .X E vw ,s 5. 55 riff!! THE BELL The Bell got off to a slow start this year, but when the first issue came out it was a big success. In two weeks the second issue arrived, and two weeks later the third issue was out. The School paper has been a big success ever since. The reason for not having the hrst paper out sooner was that the printer had dirliculty in setting new type. I think that we all agree that The Bell has done a wonderful job. Editor Norm Vester and the staff have a lot to be proud of. 58 lv x- ' . 'F 7' '31 .L . .I ,KAY Y -4 47.
