V., T gtk vip ' ' 1 V7 5 -a - Y f' ff ' xv ,.- A 71 I , . . . . , . 1 ' 'r ' -1 A 'Me pwawz 1951 Under the excellent and spirited leadership of Coach Collms Suffield compiled a com mendable 3 and 2 record against strong opposition Operating out of a split T Suffield with its very strong line and break away back field was able to rule over theoretically stronger opponents in spite of its severe lack of reserve pox er Against the Springfield V B squad and its ancient r1val Wllbraham Suffield was able to score at will Both games were marked by the fine running of halfbacks john Gwara and Huddie Thayer and the more than able field generalship of quarterback Charles Kopp The Dean Academy game proved conclusively the strength and ability of the Suffield lme Unable to pave the way for further scoring after Bob Burnleys second quarter touch down Gallup Grady Mattson Norman Pomper and Ztma led by CoCapta1n Herb Hoffman and Abe Moses successfully stifled every Dean threat before it reached the 30 That Suffield s two loses best indicate its ability and fighting spirit is a singular state ment to make but thls IS indeed the case Opening against a strong Worcester Academy team that had lost only one game over a perxod of five years the Colllnsmen jumped to a quick lead behind a well executed 90 yard run back of a punt However in splte of grlm determl nation and goal line stands the team was forced to bow before the comb1nat1on of the Worcester reserves In the final game of the season Suffield faced IIS old r1val Monson which fielded the best team in the history of that school Despite insurmountable odds because of lnjuries to the key men the team entered the game with confidence determined to play it all the way for a win The gamble almost payed off Fullback Ken Albert broke through the huge Monson lme to even the score ln the third period but Monson came back with a drive through the middle to lead 13 to 6 With Burnley and end Nelson Norman on the side lines with badly sprained ankles and John Gwara watching from a stretcher and ohn Grady playxng with a newly aggravated ankle injury Suffield started for the equalizer Although robbed of its speed and hitting power the team seemed on its way only to be denied when the clock ran out The class of 1951 will not soon forget the strength of character the sportsmanship and the fighting heart of the men of this football team nor will they soon forget the two fine men who led them courageously and loyally Roy Collins and Tom Buffinton Varsity football Schcdulc Suffield 6 13 Worcester Suffield 24 0 Springfield V Suffield 0 Dean Suffield 20 0 XX ilbraham Suffield 6 15 Monson I . . . Coach de panacea 7957 In September Ned Learned Tom Cam Richard Convey Richard Stewart Carter Sim mons Fran Romano George Vales and Donald Cannon along with Lanny Aselton and Bob Lavme reported from last years squad The newcomers this year were Frank Pacewlcz Victor Nadaskay oe Rice Bob Furey Tony Silva Ken Christian Claude Ramos Armando and Javier Medina In the first game of the season a Suffield team hindered by lack of experience was out classed by a powerful Deerfield Academy eleven 6 0 Tom Cain was outstanding at center half This game however gave Suffield the experience it needed and the team rolled over Monson 4 0 in the second game of the season Carter Simmons dented the nets for 2 goals while Fran Romano and Ken Christian each found the range in the second half Armando Medina and George Vales were outstanding performers at their respective wmg positions Then the team traveled to Easthampton Mass to cope with a strong Williston Academy combine The teams played on even terms until the closmg seconds when a Williston forward broke the scoreless tie and Suffield ended up on the short end of a 1 0 score Richard Convey and Ned Learned were best for the losers In the next game of the season Suffield was host to a strong Wilbraham Academy team The game was played with a heavy wind hampering the offense and defense of both teams It was a hard fought game all the way and Wilbraham emerged victorious 2 1 Fran Romano and Tom Cain were outstanding for Suffield Fran scored the lone Suffield goal Monson then was again overcome by a score of 3 1 at Monson Vales Tony Silva and oe Rice each netted one goal Tony s goal was one of the finest of the season he headed a beautiful corner kick by George Vales directly into the corner of the goal Bob Lavme also turned in a fine defensive game The team next traveled to Cranwell in Lenox Mass and after a battle brought home a 1 0 victory Not only did Tom Cain play excellently on defense but he also teamed up with Fran Romano to score the decisive point Vic Nadaskay played one of his best games of the season Kingswood then visited Suffield and found Suffield very sluggish on a fairly warm fall afternoon This was one of the worst teams we met but we certainly did not play better losing 2 0 Richard Convey and Carter Simmons were really the only play ers who kept us in the game When Worcester Academy came we seemed eager for victory and during the opening minutes oe Rice found the range with a hard shot well kicked which no goalie could have saved George Vales and Dick Convey turned in superior performances but Worcester won 2 1 on a nlcely executed penalty kick In the last game of the season Milford faced a very strong and much improved Suffield team Suffield played its best game of the season and defeated Milford 6 1 Ned Learned was moved from goalie to center forward and scored twice once on a penalty kick and once on a pass from Armando Medina Captain Romano George Vales Carter Simmons and Armando Medina each garnered one George Vales continually threatened from his wmg post and in the last 20 seconds finally dented the nets Javier Medina Dick Convey and Bob Lavme played well defensively for Suffield The team play displayed in this final game made the season successful for Captain Romano and his mates U 1 1 1 1 1 ' 1 1 . , . . - 1 1-1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 ' 1'- - 1 1 , , . . . . l , I ' ' ' ' 1 , . - .
