SE IIIRS 50 BRUCE ALLAN WILKIE Brew' 16 Walker Street Manchester Conn Duke Umverslty Bruce who came to Suffield this year has done a good job tn has studles I athlettcs he ltkewlse showed mterest and enthuslasm He IS ambmous and con stantly strtvmg for self improvement whether ln the classroom or basketball floor Bruce was well liked by the stu dents and the faculty and we feel sure that tn the future Bruce will have all the success that he nchly deserves Varstty Soccer 4 QLetterJ Varsity Bas ketball 4 CLetterJ Golf 4 The Pioneer OVW ijcor QL H59 0 I fm 52 CLASS HISTORY It s a fact that the class of 1950 had 1ts start in 1940 when jim Richardson came to school with his father who was teaching here The next year Franny Platt arrlved to compete on all the athletic teams In 1943 Dave Meehl hltch hiked to Suffield with his brother ack and could not get a ride home so decided to stay on and play football Also that year there was a cloud of dust as a big Cadillac came to a hault and from behmd the driver s seat stepped Al Greenberg with his new license In 1944 a Kane Furniture truck delivered new beds to the school In one of those beds was little Bob Ketover who refused to go home 1945 brought us four new class members one from war torn Poland Theodore Kulpik Tom Wxlber arrived in his new limousine driven by his favorite chauf feur The Bickmore brothers also arrived ln time to complete on the varsity track team That year Platt Meehl Greenberg Ketover The Bickmores along with Wilber and kulpik graduated from thejunlor School In our freshman year there were six new additions to the class While a Rodeo was passing through the town Tex Larue was seen chasing an Indian who later turned out to be none other than oe Norman From the same rodeo came Moonbeam Roberts While sailing up the Connectlcut River jerry Holton got lost and was found trytng to make his way out of the creek in back of the athletic field While searching for an outlet he first met Bubbles Nowatarski The Marcus Sign Co was putting up the honor roll tn town and when Mr Marcus saw what fine gentlemen there were at the Academy he decided to send his son there Now with our freshman year completed we had a grand total of fifteen members As our sophomore year rapldly approached we were all eager to renew our old friendships at C LI This year brought us seven new class members Fred Ashman came to meet Patty Coates and declded he might as well spend a few years at the Academy A politician named Toppy Tembussl from Windsor Locks while campaigning with his little red wagon saw the boys at play on the village green and wanted to stay From Cuba came a student who had decided he wanted to study English so Erasmo Palec came to Suffield An old car stalled in front of the Mrddle Bullding and out stepped Teddy Weld to see lf he could find a mechanic He couldn t but he did find Suffield From Springfield came the little bookle in his pencil striped suit Al Manazer When Al arrived his first friend became the perfect scholar Bill G1v1n Symonds got mislayed in the post office and was brought to the Academy in the mall bag Yes we were now getting to feel a little older and our class was taking shape We then had twenty two members We were now in our yunxor year and members were arriving from all over the world Our quletest class member arrived 1n the form of Davld Mosher We were happy to see him although we did not hear him From Torrington came two fine youths oe Adorno and his political boss Dlck Eagan From the Arthur Murray Dancing Studlo came Fred Shine and Fred Ferrari to help Constantine Dumas the dancing instructor at the Academy From new Britain came ay Pearl and Don Fetgenbaum to play in Ozzie s Band Bellrose came to study French before he was married Bob johnson came to Sufiield late as usual for football practice A new foreign student came from Cuba to , . . . . ' jom Palec he was Ed Hernandez Now we were expandlng to a great slze for a prep school as small as ours We all agreed wlth Mr Terwllllger when he said Next year IS the year This was the year we had been wanting for 1950 We had struggled through three hard years but thls our senior year was to brmg memorles never to be for gotten by any ofus tn the half century graduatmg class at Suffield Academy This year more students reallzed what value a prep school background IS ln college and so of course they enrolled tn the Academy On reglstratlon day one could see qulte an assortment of boys all shapes and slzes There were many new faces and names to be remembered ohn Mele and Bruce Hendsey decided they would join thelr Wmdsor Locks frlend Robert Tambussl on h1s mornmg excursxons We had a quartet of foreign students thls year ohn Kuronsurt and Sam Narumlt from Slam Eduardo Perez from Cuba and Andres Varela from Venezuala Torrington Hlgh sent us two of their finest athletes tn Peter Mazzaferro and Andy Baslle From the ranks of Enfield Hlgh came an assortment of football players There were lgger Dmeen Gus Westberg Mtckey Marec and Jack Rook ln a wheel chalr From other schools came three all Connecticut football players co captatn and guard Fred Robinson end ohn Waz and tackle Herb Hoffman Our wonderful basketball team was blessed wxth such versatlle fellows as MlCkey Porto Gene Sullxvan Tom Caln Phtl Pease and last as usual George Poulos Ken Albert found trme to leave all the women tn Westfield to study at the Academy One of West Sprlng field s future buslness men brought hls younger brother to school and dec1ded that he too would stay that was Lee Mlller Kulas and Remlngton took a short walk from the htgh school and found that they ltked the fellows and teachers at the Academy so they enrolled for a year Th1s year we notxced several new boys wtth kahk1 shlrts and pants II wasn t hard to figure out why We had a troop of soldxers wlth us under the watchful eye of General Frank Skoywara and hxs able asslstant Sergeant Cognlac Vtgnone Among the other men tn brown were Dxck fFrank1e Lanej Posnlck Ralph MOFIHIIIY john Ferrtter Hap Bryden and jash Borawskl Mxchael Donnell came to study plane geometry wxth Mr Baker Tom Stevenson came to Suffield because he heard that there was a prxvate room wtth maxd service for all soccer players Koehler found the fur trappmg fine down by the creek Forsberg supposedly came to help Mr Ward with the basketball team Dick Owens figured that a year at prep school would help htm develop his memory Larry Morrlson came to help Bob Ketover l1ft his weights Dave Poverman took the wrong subway and found hlmself tn the basement of the North Bulldtng Rouette came to Suffield by way of the Al Greenberg express from Sprmglield Last but certalnly not least came Billy johnson to lnspxre the boys 1n all phases of school llfe w1th h1s famous Come on gang Now we the class of 1950 w1sh to thank all the teachers who have done so much for us and who were so understandmg durlng our adolescent years Every hour wxll be a treasured memory for us ln the years to come and we hope that the classes whlch follow wxll enjoy thelr stay at Suffield Academy as much as we have enjoyed ours Thanks for the memorles ' ' u n ' ' , . . . , ll ' 77 , . 9 9 9 ' a 9 - , . - J . , j Y! to Rzgbt Pare Co Capt Norman Posmck R1chardson Platt Grady Hoffman Meehl Eagan 3rd Row Letto Rzgbt Mazzaferro Ketover Rook Morlarty Dxneen R john son Nowotarskx Kulpxc Kopp 4th Row Left to Rzgbt Borawskx Waz W ohnson Anderson Porto Co Capt Robmson Kelly Goodlove fManager Brown fAsst Managerj 5th Row Left to Right Coach Terwxlllger N Norman Asst Coach Buffinton Al ,,..4v Co-Capt., Coach, Coach, Co-Capt., joseph Norman Warren Terwilliger Thomas Buflinton Fred Robinson VARSITY FOOTBALL The Sufheld footballers of 1949 completed a successful season by winning three of the six games played An unceasmg display of spirit and determination was characteristic of every member of the s uad This great courage was dis played time and again as the Orange and Blac gridsters roared up in the second half and either pulled out a victory or came exceedingly close in a sam attempt Because of this practice Suffield Academy was affectionately known around the football circles as a second half club This distinction was responsible for many exciting and tense games which resulted in the course of the season It also kept many an opposing coach as well as the crowd in suspense until the last whistle was blown Leadlng our fighting forces were Co Captains Fred Robinson a dynamic line man from West Haven Conn andjoe Norman plunging fullback from Agawam Massachusetts These tvso lads were extremely instrumental in the Suffield plan of attack and were continually praised by rival coaches and players This year s squad was v1v1dly marked by products of previous .I V teams as such men as Dave Meehl Ted Kulpik jim Richardson George Kelley Nelson Nor man Bill G1v1n Fran Platt Charley Kopp Co Captain Norman Bob Ketover erry Holton Dick Eagan and Fred Nowotorski all saw service on -I V teams at Suffield Supplementing the previous mentioned squad members were newcomers such as Herb Hoffman Billy johnson ohn Waz Bob Anderson Pete Mazzafero Mickey Porto ohn Rook Dave Poverman Frank Skowra and Mark Posnick all lmemen Bob Pare john Westberg ski included the new backs ekrans of last year s squad Bob ohnson Gus Dumas and ohn Grady also played prominent roles ln the Suffield attack The squad was very ably coached by Mr Warren Terwilltger and his HSSISIZHI and line coach Mr Tom Buffinton These coaches did a masterful job in fitting together many inexperienced and young players with the seasoned veter ans They should be commended for an excellent ,ob The season s opener saw Kimball Union get away to a 19 0 lead at half time 1D a game played on the Academy field The Suffield lads then turned on the heat but despite touchdowns by Bob Pare and Bob johnson fell short in a valiant attempt and bowed 19 13 The next game saw john Westberg gallop 40 yards to a touchdown and oe Norman 6 yards to another as Suffield gained a 12 0 victory over Moses Brown In the third contest our lads met disaster as a power ful University of Connecticut Frosh team overwhelmed Suffield 26 0 The score however was not indicative of the closeness of the battle as the score at half time read 0 0 The larger UConn squad however romped in the second half and piled up 26 big points The big disappointment of the season was a heartbreak ing 12 0 defeat at the hands of our arch rival Wilbraham Playing unorthodox football all the way the visitors gained a hard fought victory much to the dismay of all Suffield rooters The next and fifth game of the season resulted in a 13 0 victory over Cranwell on the visitors field Franny Platt dashed 13 yards for Suffield s first score and Ken Albert 70 yards on a pass interception for the second and final score The highlight of the season occurred in Suffield s final game of the campaign In a game played before a large turnout on the Academy field our warriors turned back previously undefeated Monson 13 7 ln a rousing battle Monson took an early lead by scoring a touchdown IU the first quarter of play The courageous lads of Suffield however were not phased and came fighting back john Borow ski drove for 7 fighting yards and a score midway in the second period and thus Suffield trailed 7 6 at half time as the try for extra point was missed The final and deciding score of the contest resulted in the third period when Charley Kopp flipped a flat pass to john Waz who snared it unmolested in the end zone Monson tried valiantly for victory by throwing long desparation passes but it was to no avail and the victory bell rang again on the west campus bringing down the curtain on the 1949 grid season at Suffield Academy 1 ' . 'wg L25 l. ., 'MQ VARSITY BASKETBALL For the 4th consecutne year the Academy basketball team enjoyed a highly successful year as they won 17 out of 18 games in regular play and then for the second time in 3 years were slctorlous in the New England Preparatory School Tournament in Boston Chosen to represent the New England SCCIIOII in the 28th annual Eastern States Tournament in Glens Falls N Y the Orange and Black were edged by Blair Academy of Blatrstown N in a 50 48 thriller With only George Poulos standlng ox er 6 feet the charge of C oach Stan Ward more than made up their hclght deficiency by playing a full court press on defense and a fast brelkmg offense Speed aggressneness md excellent team pl ny re sulted in w lctory after victory over larger and more experienced opponents Thc Academy mmed through its first 16 games undefelted before dropping a hotly contested 64 60 struggle to a giant Hartford Extension Unn of Conn combine Included in the sensational strmg were uctories oxer such perennial powers as Monson Dean Amherst Frosh Wllbraham Loomis Williston and Kingswood The season closed with a smashing 16 pomt triumph over a fine Brown Frosh team it Proudence Instrumental 1n the team s success were the lightning fast Gene Sullnan who scorcd 267 points in regular season plly to smash thc school indiudual scoring record and 'Iom C .un the team s clutch scorer Bruce Wilkie and giant George I oulos vu ho alternated at center tossed in 200 points betvt een them and dominated the backbolrds Tvso of the finest guards 10 Suffield court history patrolled the back court Phil Pease and Mickey Porto not only contributed scoring punch but their floor play vs as of the highest calibre Two reserw es played key roles in the team success as xmmy Richardson played msplred ball at elther forvt ard berth and his deadly one hand shot contributed materially to several XICIOIICS james Hap Bryden although not a prolific scorer contributed the poise and coolness so needed it guard The team undoubtedly reached its season s peak in the final of the Preparatory School Tournament in Boston against the Tilton School The Wardmen ad xanced to the final by drubblng C olleglate Prep 48 40 and then against the New Hampshire School put on one of the finest exh1b1t1ons of polished play ever seen at the Garden to vs in going avt ay by 12 points After a 2 week layoff the team returned to the court wars in Glens Fills but poor foul shootlng aided materially to Blair Academy s 50 48 uctory Ewery member of the 15 man squad was awarded letters at the annual banquct in recognition of his superior play and xmpressne exhibition of sportsmanship which was eudent in es ery situatlon 1 9 4 . , . . K Y, L U I - , . ll A4 .C , 1 - Wxifwhge ,M , L M.: an ,, K fi I f '. y 9 ' 9 9 1 j U' n , , SWIMMING As the 1950 swlmming season started it looked as though Suffield was going to have a very successful season Fourteen boys came out for the first two weeks but due to many misfortunes the team consisted of only seven men These seven men worked hard and faithful for the entire season but were not able to get into adequate condxtlon due to the lack of swimming fac1l1t1es at the school The seven swimmers who survived were Captain Fred Ferrari 50 yd man David Bodxn and Carter White breast stroke men William G1v1n back stroke Sam Chevalter and Charles Orcutt 100 yd and 200 yd men and Richard Lan ers diver These men fought hard for the points they recelved The first official swimmtng meet was held with Dean Academy The outstand mg events were Captaln Ferrari placing first in the 50 yd and Bodxn plactng first 1n the breast stroke The 1 50. yd medly relay was composed of G1v1n Whtte and Ferrari they did a commendable job in defeating a powerful opposing relay team The 200 yd free relay team composed of Landers Langley Orcutt and Holton took first place whlch made the final score 42 30 IU favor of Suffield The second meet was held w1th Tech High School and due to the lack of practice Sufiield was defeated 47 19 The Deerfield JV s thought they had an easy meet when Suffield met them in their own pool but Captain Ferrarl defeated Deerfield s 50 yd man with ease Th1s inspired the men but could not llft them enough to defeat this strong Deerfield team The 200 yd relay team composed of Orcutt Sterch White and anchor man Ferrari defeated a powerful Deerfield relay team by lnches Suffield was agaln challenged by Tech Hlgh School whlch the swimming team gladly accepted Suffield the under dog scored 28 polnts agalnst their 44 Class1calH1gh School was our last meet The first event was the 50 yd free style tn whlch Fred Ferrari agatn took first place Our diver Richard Landers made a wonderful exh1b1t1on of his diving skill whlch resulted 1n a first place for our team.
