They have maintained a school with the best educational and extra-curricular facilities in the state. We extend to them our sincere thanks for their worthy efforts in making our years at S.H.S. so pleasant and profitable. 6 MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1947: Congratulations to the members of the Class of 1947. You have fulfilled a desire, attained an objective and found a new beginning. The objective has been in many cases the acquiring of charted knowledge, or receipt of formal certification or granted oppor- tunity for further study. These seeming objectives are really only means, means carrying you inexorably toward the development of a total personality, good or bad, which will benefit or retard man- kind. I hope that your subjects and classes have provided you with the knowledge to think clearly and honestly and in addition have served as laboratories for the development of sound judgments, for the achievement of selfless devotion to high ideals, and for the attainment of respect and appreciation for all mankind. at home and abroad. May the memory of our Uruguayan visitor, Miss Bea- trice Lopez Monestier, ever be a reminder that the world is small and that we are all truly neighbors. Again congratulations upon your graduation from high school. I hope that the education gained through the elementary and sec- ondary schools of this school district has kindled a desire for further learning and has helped prepare you for the greater tasks ahead. FosTER S. BROWN Sllp67l'iJi7Zg Principal, xxx ' gig.,-1-1-f X' '17 5 , 491 TO THE CLASS OF 1947: You've lived your high school years upon the hill In classrooms hitherto untenanted. Immeasurably your class has helped to forge Distinctive patterns of activity. From neophitic frosh to cap and gown! Congratulation-full and unrestrained! As time gives you a recollective mood, Draw forth a clipping here and there, A medal, or the program of your prom, Memento of a championship hard-won, And most important still your cherished ann A Panoramic view of life at school. If these can measure satisfactorily The culture and the knowledge each has wrought Into his way of life, then all is well. However, proofs of educated men Lie not in souvenirs but useful deeds And contributions of enlightenment. How fairly do you treat your fellow men? How squarely do you face your daily tasks? How brightly lighted is your inner self By music, and the arts, and literature? Here is the challenge to create anew A world community of honor and respect. LESTER E. RoUNDs, High School Principal. S ual- 18 u 3 N.. Slllllllll AIIVISIIR MISS RIDLEY, whose tireless efforts have spurred us on to greater achieve- ments, we are most grateful. MISS MIX, who has worked with us and understood us, we extend our sincere thanks. MR. ZVVART, who has continually worked in our benefit, we express appreciation. In so doing the elected members gain experi- ence in discussing the promoting legislation that will react to the benefit of the student body as a unined whole, and thus make our school community a better one. This year's council went at its task with a will, and when its terms of office had expired, the members were able to look back upon a busy year with many accomplishments. During the year the council voted to make the Mountain Echo subscription a part of the GO. card, and sponsored the sending of three repre- sentatives to the Empire State Student Press Associa- tion Conference at Syracuse. It also sponsored the March of Dimes and Magazine Campaigns, presented an interesting variety of entertaining and educational assemblies, and too, took charge of the Suffern High Band in their performance at the teachers' convention in New York City. The funds for support ofthe numer- ous clubs ancl sports were administered by the council and they also sponsored a New Years Dance, continued the effective Hall Guide System, sold pins, buttons and banners. They also played at all the pep rallies and games during the football season. A short concert was given at the Lafayette Theatre in the fall, and the band was also the highlight of a fall concert given at the school by the entire music department. A trip to New York to play for the Teachers' Convention at St. Nicholas Arena was another important event of the year. Our members participated in the llO-piece All-County Band, and our own band provided musical entertainment for the afternoon session. The school had the honor this year of having a Festival held here on May 6 and 7 in which the band and soloists entered on a contest basis. The band, and the chorus also spon- sored a Spring Concert which was a great success. A brass sextet, formed from the band, has served both school and community by playing for group singing. Promising candidates of past season experience were made up of Paul Villarosa, Francis Dunnigan, james Rice, john Dembnicki, Norwood Ernst. Williiim Morrow. Peter Callaghan, Lee Stewart, Harley Smith. and joseph Nappo. Newcomers who will bolster the strength of our team should be: Edward Waligrciski, Wallace Russo, Michael Brown, Burton Thompson, Ronald Becraft, W'illiam Keers, Glen Brubaker, Gary Herring, Edward Newlands, and Edward Small. Vanity C oacb-PETER KURACHEK Jr. Vanizy C0d6b-WILLIAM MAHANEY TRACK The 1947 track and held team faced the task of upholding the fine record set by the 1946 squad. The schedule included a total of lil meets including 5 triangular meets, 7 dual meets, and 4 championships. The team lost many of its star competitors but made up for these losses with team balance. The middle distance runners and pointers carried the consistent scoring punch which was well supplemented by the pole vaulters and high jumpers. Two sprinters from last years state championship sprint relay team, Bruce Williams and Paul Villarosa. formed the nucleus of another fast quartet. it .P fini' v ,X LV.BASKETBALL While the Varsity was clinching the Rockland County P.S,A.I.. basketball champion- ship for the second straight year, the junior Varsity proved that it will furnish excellent material for next year's Varsity with a successful season of 10 wins and 7 losses. This placed Suffern third in the county junior league. Edward Clark, james Hoffman, joseph Nappo, Harley Smith, and Donald Stewart proved a strong, capable starting five, ably backed up by the remaining members of the squad. The entire squad was well-balanced, and displayed marked improvement in each suc- cessive game. A game captain was appointed before each game, and an honorary captain elected at the close of the season. joseph Nappo was accorded this honor by his teammates. LV.FOOTBALL The little Mounties had a very successful season as far as experience goes. They were coached by john Medve, who did an excellent job with the boys. This year the j.V.s pro- duced plenty of available material for next years Varsity squad. Some of the potentialities ate, Ed Clark, who quarterbacked, the J.V. squadg joe Nappo, hard-working center, Pitt Hoffman, charging guard, and john Dembnicki, tall pass-receiving end. Also Bob Meehan, Ed Becraft, Blackie Consiglio, Bob Hill, Herbert Harvey, Snap Van Dunk, Bill Keers, Richard August, and Wilbur Stiles. 1llL 415. ..a ,lllk af' I W' 1 f .
