Before introducing to you the people who make up the school, we shall now show you the buildings which make up the campus, and, in so doing, give you a brief history of Sue Bennett. The school, founded in 1897 by Belle Bennett in memory of her sister, had as its first structure the Administration Building, shown at the right. To the left is the second building to be erected, Helm Hall, the girlsi dorm, which was completed in 1910. The school dining room is located here. After Helm Hall, the Belle Bennett Auditorium Building was added to the growing campus. Miss Belle Bennett, for whom the structure was named, was present at the dedication ceremony in 1922. Pictured to the left is Downs Hall, the men,s dormitory, built in 1929. It houses the men students, the Dean of men, the hostess, and Mr. Conley. Below, you see the athletics buildings. To the left is the gymnasium, erected in 1926. To the right, is the Hector Scoville Swimming Pool, which was built in 1940. The funds for this building were contributed by Hector H. Scoville, a member of the first graduating class of Sue Bennett. South of the President's home, pictured to the right, which was built in 1960, are the tennis courts. Down from there are the picnic grounds, including a large outdoor fireplace. The two buildings pictured here--our two newesti --were dedicated on October 1, 1966. They are the Minerva McDaniel Library-Science Building, left,i and the Oscie Sanders Student Center, below. The Library-Science Building houses the library, a conference room, and the sci- ence lecture rooms and laboratories. The Student Center contains a student lounge, a snack bar, and a recreation room. This picture shows the conference room and some of the people who attended the ded- ication ceremonies . The Board of Sue Bennett Col- lege at the close of the dedication service on October 1. Bishop Roy A. Short was the s p e ak e r for the occasion. esttieeeeeieeeeettet To the west of the Library Science building and the Student Center is the athletic field. Here, according to long range plans, as projected by the Board of Trustees, is to be erected a physical education building. At that time, the present gymnas- ium is to be made into a chapel. Mwwwmacmwwohm Next to be completed is the faculty apartment building at the left of the College Street entrance to the campus. It is to have eight units. ikahkilwkilKiOHOItthkzlEJiokiwkakik This, in brief, is our campus. By seeing the step-by-step additions and improvements of the buildings, you can under- stand how the Sue BennettCampus is one of a changing face. Now, let us show you the people who make up the school, and you will understand how rapidly the school itself changes. Here, now, is a ' birdis-eye-view of THE CHANGING FACES OF SUE BENNETT. 'EARL F. HAYS B.S., Berea College M.S., University of Kentucky L;H.D., Union College President ,In Tribute To EARL F, HAYS Our Student Center is brick, wood, mortar, the imagination of architect, the skill of artisans; it is also vision, daring, commitment, the pooled resources of many donors. tiWe, the students and faculty of Sue Bennett College, do this day, for ourselves and our successors, express deep and lasting appreciation to you, Earl F. Hays, for the substantial investment of dream and energies to realize the construction of the Oscie Sanders Student Center. The building will be a lasting tribute to you as well as the one honored in its naming.H hatttstt$$ttissstsh$ The above is a copy of the wording that appears on a plaque presented to President Hays on October 25 by the Student Activities Committee in behalf of the student body. As this plaque shows our appreciation for the work that he has done in making the Student Center possible, we hope that this yearbook will be a tribute to him as well.
