I954 Football Season The Trojans started their new season on the wrong foot but they finished with a highly impressive record and a rating of tenth among the football teams in the state. The Trojans had an 8-3 record for the season. In the season opener, Subiaco took on the powerful North Little Rock Wildcats on their home soil and lost a loose-played ball game 27 to 0. It was a bitter mouthful to swallow but it was due to inexperience on the team's part. The Trojans came back like Wildcats in their next game against the Mena Bearcats as they romped over them 32 to 6. It was an easy victory for the power-ridden Trojans whose every play seemed to roll for tremendous yardage. Then the Trojans played underdog, a role which they were destined to play most of the season. They invaded Fayetteville and won over the Bulldogs in one of the most exciting games of the years that these two teams have battled. With the 26 to 25 victory over Fayetteville, led by Mike Donnelly, the Trojans' stock soared high in the state poll. Then the Trojans elected to try to unthrone mighty DeQueen and they almost did before losing a close one, 13 to 6. It was nip and tuck until a long pass play clicked and left the Trojans out in the cold. The Trojans started a drive that ended about on the twenty yard line but that was as far as they could get. With a two and two record, the Trojans began a winning streak when they mauled Rogers 33 to 6. In this game, Eugene Gaisbauer, almost single-handedly beat the Mountaineers. He compiled a tremendous yard- age rushing and scored four touchdowns before he was hurt in the third quarter. The triumphant Trojans went to Booneville to thrash the Bulldogs 27 to 12 in a game that featured long punt returns by the Trojans. Jimmy Hornibrook and Mike Cooney both returned punts for eighty yards. The next game was a traditional battle and both teams were up to their full strength as Subiaco met the District 5 Champions, the Catholic High Rockets of Little Rock. The Rockets had the edge because their quarter- back, Max Smith, was a wizard with a football, but Subiaco unleashed a wizard of its own. Mike Cooney came through with a brilliant per- formance, being all over the field, pouncing on fumbles, intercepting passes and calling fine signals. He led the Trojans to a 27 to 13 victory and extended the winning streak to three straight games.
