B. 17 1 5 THE MOST REVEREND ALBERT L. FLETCHER. D. D Bishop of The Diocese of Little Rock A PAX At times we sit down to reorientate and to recall for the hundreth time again just what our job is all about-this business of education. We have been arriving at the same answer for a long time. Education is not a matter of loading a man down with credits and class hours like sticking plaster on a wall. Education is more a matter of mining precious metal, unearthing the tal- ents God has put in a man and' regulating these talents in the service of good and gracious living. V Knowledge without principle is dangerous. We have seen unprincipled knowledge send our generation to war. There must be both harmony and peace between mind and will. Teaching man the purpose of being and the end of destiny is the task of true education. Peace is the Way of fulfillment-Peace with God and fellow-man. When the time came to name this book, we wanted to find one word that would hold all the answer we had so often arrived at in our search for the meaning of education. Then we hit on the name PAX. ls it not an original name for the book. PAX was the name used by the men who put out the first Subiaco Year Book some twenty years ago. And these men knew the answer. PAX is also the keynote of the Benedictine Order which conducts Subiaco Academy. The Benedictines have been educating men for fourteen hundred years. We feel that we have done well in choosing the name PAX. PAX is the Latin word for Peace. STAFF EDITOR Henry B. Voqler ASSOCIATES Iohn G. Hendricks Ioseph P. Hoeqger David L. Kassebaum Ioseph H. Ray- mond will be better remembered as a frend and loyal supporter. The Chaplain's office, too, fills a real need and solves some prob- lems. On the adage that it is better to be sfe than sorry, the Infirm- ary is competently staffed by Fr. Paul and Bro. James ,backed by Dr. John at Paris. Plenty of ser- vice but no 'gold-bricking' allow- ed. After ,Hours It's nice workg and we don't mind the over-time. Amateurs at play. Guests for dinner. You should come oftener! A boarding school is certainly a home away from home and must supply a well balanced round of activity to do its job well. Any- one offerng 'public service' as the candy store attendants at left, is much sought after. S Club Rod ond Gun i RELIGIGN The Scholostics The Scholasticate is a special department of the Academy devoted to the training of young men for the Benedictine priesthood. The Scholastics are Minor Seminarians. Though they attend some class- es in the regular high school department, their work and training is separate and distinct. Classes range from first year high school to first year college. The Scholastics are required to Wear cassocks and sur- plices for certain functions and are expected to maintain a high level of discipline and decorum in keeping with the high state to which they aspire. The Scholastic enjoys an intimate acquaintance With the men he intends to follow and a first-hand insight into the life he proposes to lead. T1 I Lessons learned in silence, char- acters molded in meditation, spir- its are refreshed. A chance to talk things over and to come to peace with God is a valued inter- lude in a busy day. The three-day retreat is annually a high point in the school year. This year we are grateful for the kind services of the Reverend Clarence Vowels of Des Moines, Iowa. This picture of the May Queen procession through south park reminds us happily of our indebtedness to the Sisters and girls of St. Scholastica Academy for their annual cooperation in carrying out the program. Here we pay a son's tribute .to his mother. For the countless times you took our troubles to give us comfort and courage, for the times you listen- ed so that we could speak of victory, for a mother's solicitude-our thanks is sincere and great. Some months ago the job looked almost too big. It had been a long 'number of years since the Academy had un- dertaken such a publication. Many factors had militated against the project. Many of these still obtained when this book was projected. The enthusiasm of the student body for the book and the growing status of the school warranted the publication at this time. We counted on our friends to see us through, and the finished book is a credit to their kindness: We are fortunate in our many friends. We shall not betray their confi- dence. Nor shall We forget their kindness. Louis B. Berkermeyer lake Bezner . . .
