I cn Z o h-1 H O W h4 Ph W AN ODYSSEY OF REFLECTIONS Trying to write about reflections, we ran into a problem: How are we to reflect on behalf of 771 seniors? Our own efforts would knock off two reflections, so with 769 to go, we asked our boss. She remem- bered her mother keeping her in on Friday nights. She’s never been to a Stuyvesant dance. Her loss. We walked out of the room and passed two members of the speech team being spoken to by Mr. Bau- mel. They yawned and we took that as their reflections. We thought about asking Mr. Baumel for his re- flections, but space was a consider- ation. We proceeded down the hall and visited the Tarot Astrology Cult. By virtue of the moon card, Mr. X predicted a victory for SE- NIOR SING and the Boston Red Sox. So far, 0 for 1. With 765 more to go, we stopped by the West Cafeteria. The Presi- dent of the Chess Club complained about ping pong balls knocking over pieces on crucial moves, “Even when they don’t ruin the game, they’re an awful distraction. But otherwise I like Stuyvesant.” In a corner of the West Cafe, we found three people playing poker, one of whom was winning all the money. He told us that doing well at Stuyvesant was like winning at cards, all you had to do was “con- centrate and cheat like hell.” The other two players reached into their pockets and we thought it was a good time to visit the gym. As we walked towards the door, a distinctive odor reached us and we 18
