“
I went back to the school not long ago, and found it looking oddly newer than when I was a student there fifteen years before. It seemed more sedate than I remembered it, more perpen- dicular and strait-laced, with narrower win- dows and shinier woodwork, as though a coat of varnish had been put over everything for better preservation. Perhaps the school wasn’t as well kept up in those days; perhaps varnish, along with everything else, had gone to war. I didn’t entirely like this glossy new surface, because it made the school look like a museum, and that’s exactly what it was to me, and what I did not want it to be. In the deep, tacit way in which feeling becomes stronger than thought, I had always felt that the school came into exis- tence the day I entered it, was vibrantly real while I was a student there, and then blinked out like a candle the day I left. —John Knowles A Separate Peace 2 And so to play: ball and ring and hoop in a garden that is gently paling, and sometimes to brush against the grownups, blind and disheveled in the haste of tag, but in the evening quietly, with small stiff steps to go walking home . . , O childhood, O images slipping from us . . Rainer Maria Rilke On the morning of my first day 1 spotted the grafitti on the side of the building, a dedication sprawled in bold, black letters, To all the beautiful girls of Stuy- vesant... 1 smiled to my- self, and held my head a little higher, feeling wel- comed, as if some un- known and long-gone stu- dent had written it for me . .. We enter this building . . . stepping upon lacquered floors — shiny, slippery like wearing new shoes on marble — and we climb the five flights over and over. Slowly, the paths of our feet wear away the layers of thick wax, and the lines we walk in leave their mark, softening the floors to fit perfectly to our soles . .. 5 He nudged me, Hey, look!'' His Casio watch sat between his fingers. Slowly, he caught the rays of the sun coming over his shoulder on the face of his watch. A spot of white light danced on the space of plaster above the blackboard. Chuckling to himself, he directs the spot to hit the teacher's backside. Whispers and embarrassment, the class dissolves. 7 8 At 340 E. 15 Street, from a window on the third floor, the window-woman watches the activity across the street as she leans on both elbows with her forearms folded . . . Between lab periods, he makes his exchanges — We take into our hands his warm, twisted dough covered in salt, and drop a quarter and two dimes into the pretzel man's tray . . . 9 The park-people sometimes singing Marvin Gaye or pulling shopping carts behind them, take our empty soda cans and speak with us a bit about Moses or ask for spare change . . . And if we are listening we can hear the hot dog man ask in Spanish, You must be the sister of the Springtime, and then, You will not let her get away from us, si? 10 11 Our anonymous secrets are printed in both large and tiny letters on the doors of the bathroom stalls or carved in jagged form into the corner of a wooden desk. The pictures or simple circles scored around the inkwells become our fossils. 13 We hear leaves. Kicked and scraping against the stones . . . there is a black gate that runs around this place — it is intricate and delicate. It gives stripes to the cars on the other side and makes the people look and move choppily. . . there are people in sweaters and jackets. We hear with newspapers and bookbags ... a bus screeching slowly to a stop at the light on the corner. 15 idmiti ...... ...... .......V . .IV «HUMI.' I wu 1 V- mix V. 's 17 I cn Z o h-1 H O W h4 Ph W AN ODYSSEY OF REFLECTIONS Trying to write about reflections, we ran into a problem: How are we to reflect on behalf of 771 seniors? Our own efforts would knock off two reflections, so with 769 to go, we asked our boss. She remem- bered her mother keeping her in on Friday nights. She’s never been to a Stuyvesant dance. Her loss. We walked out of the room and passed two members of the speech team being spoken to by Mr. Bau- mel. They yawned and we took that as their reflections. We thought about asking Mr. Baumel for his re- flections, but space was a consider- ation. We proceeded down the hall and visited the Tarot Astrology Cult. By virtue of the moon card, Mr. X predicted a victory for SE- NIOR SING and the Boston Red Sox. So far, 0 for 1. With 765 more to go, we stopped by the West Cafeteria. The Presi- dent of the Chess Club complained about ping pong balls knocking over pieces on crucial moves, “Even when they don’t ruin the game, they’re an awful distraction. But otherwise I like Stuyvesant.” In a corner of the West Cafe, we found three people playing poker, one of whom was winning all the money. He told us that doing well at Stuyvesant was like winning at cards, all you had to do was “con- centrate and cheat like hell.” The other two players reached into their pockets and we thought it was a good time to visit the gym. As we walked towards the door, a distinctive odor reached us and we 18 realized they weren’t folk-dancing inside. On the mats, a crowd ofll wrestlers in headgear was watch- ing the coach demonstrate tech- nique on a senior unfortunate enough still to be on Junior Varsity. After he had been turned upside- down by the neck but just before he burned his face on the mat, he was able to tell us, “it’s all in the hips.” Only 762 reflections left and feel- ing confident with our progress, we took the stairs down to the stage where we came upon a plethora of seniors working behind the scenes of this year’s production. An art di- rector told us she spent her time trying to get the paint out from un- der her nails and a sound manager told us he had learned at Stuyve- sant that the totality of the uni- verse’s most pressing existential questions could be understood in terms of a four-letter word begin- ning with “B”. Amidst all the confusion and mulling about, one stage squad member stood tall with his power drill poised and though he ad- mitted, “it was a sad day when we lost cable TV,” he assured us that “squad is still a family and a happy one at that.” In the auditorium, we caught a bit of play rehearsal and managed to ask one senior star for her thoughts. She said she didn’t have too many, but expressed her confi- dence in the play’s success. When asked why, the young thespian said, “Because of me”. It was getting late with 758 se- niors yet to reflect, so we left the auditorium and ran into a debater. -------------------—--------i When asked for her reflections she belligerently replied, “And just what do you mean by reflections anyway?” We moved on. In front of the weight room we came upon the Stuyvesant Sports Information Director (SID). He told us he “only dealt in concrete facts” but that his friend, a booster, was good with abstractions. “I’ll always remember the diver- sity of the student body, the good times and the bad times I shared with all the dear, dear friends I’ve made here. They’ve all been so good to me, sometimes I coidd just, just . . . Oh, I’d better stop before I start to sound corny.” From the weight room it was a short walk to the Spectator office where a sign told us that Spectator was coming out shortly, but no one was inside the office to talk to us. In the S.U., we told a senior that only three percent of our grade had reflected and that it was getting dark outside. He spoke about the Students Rights Council, the blood drive, and the prom, told us the president wasn’t in and that we shouldn’t be worried, because few- er than three percent of the stu- dents had voted in the last election. Feeling better about our reflec- tion collection, we left the S.U. and walked up to the first floor. On the way, we tripped over a couple who told us that they had spent the bet- ter part of four years intertwined on the staircase. Although the dirt was a problem at times, they said they certainly had enjoyed high school. 20 I In the lobby, six dancers were re-1 hearsing for the show. Two of them | were seniors. We asked the choreo- grapher, who said she was too busy to reflect and went back to dancing. “No, no, no . . . you’ve got it all wrong. You grab my thigh on three and lift on four. Okay?” Her part- ner nodded. The janitor told us we would have to leave the building soon, so with nobody left, we stepped out onto 15th street and started to- wards the subway. Cletus, who de- scribed himself as a resident of Stuyvesant Park and an honorary student of Stuyvesant High School, remembers singing with other stu- dents but complained about the se- curity guards not letting him go to class. We walked down First Avenue and into the subway station. Away from the school, it occurred to us how much there was to reflect upon at Stuyvesant. We realized there would be much more once Stuyve- sant became part of our past. Each of you has been a part of an historic series of events which reflect your talents, your character and your heart. Needless to say, the number of academic awards won by the members of this class is as remarkable as ever. The sports teams have more than held their own and during your years here our Wrestling Teams, Swim- ming Teams and Fencing Teams have won City Championships. Our Football Teams, Bowling Teams, and Soccer Teams won many Divi- sional Championships. Our school placed more students in the All City Orchestra and the All City Band than did virtually any other school in the city. Our Debate Team and our Math Teams have won City, State, and National honors. However, not many people know of the service rendered the people of our city by Stuyvesant students. Our Arista tutored students in neighborhood schools and the Stu- dent Union helped feed the elderly on Thanksgiving Day. Clothing drives and food drives were mounted to help the homeless. Students served as volunteers in hospitals, shelters, homes for the aged and in children’s centers. The class of ’87 gave of themselves willingly and with much spirit. These demonstrations of caring, of love, of conscience, arc the special hallmarks of this class. I hose who gave did not follow some prescriptions or a recipe one might find in an enchiridion for col- lege admission. I hey gave of themselves because it is their nature. What each of you has done during your years at Stuyvesant will echo through the years. The theme of this yearbook is “reflections”. When I think of all you have done, I think of the infinite reflections seen in a pair of parallel mirrors. The images formed stretch on and on to infinity and so do the accomplishments of this class. The sounds of your voices reflecting off the walls echo on forever. All of us who have had the privilege of knowing you will remember you always. The spirit of camarade- rie, friendship and love which characterizes this class will linger in our memory as well. As you leave Stuyvesant, we wish each of you the most productive and fulfilling future. You have done well here and we know you will continue to do so as you move ahead through life. We hope you will remember your years here with much joy and that you will come back often to share your life with us. We shall miss you but we are comforted in knowing what you have done in the past and how much more you will accomplish in the years ahead. Sincerely, PRINCIPAL Abraham Baumel Abraham Baumel Principal REFLECTIONS One person looks into a pond and sees reflections; a science student remembers ripple tanks and the spec- trum. One person looks into a mirror and sees reflections; a science student remembers angle of incidence equals an- gle of reflection. I look at the members of this senior class and reflect on the physical, social, and intellectual changes that have occurred . . . I remember when you came to take the entrance ex- ams. I remember when you came into my chem class and into my office to work — what small, quiet, eager people you were. Today you are taller than I am. You are mature, knowl- edgeable and voluble. You have social grace. You are not afraid to show your wit, your intelligence and your in- volvement. Then I reflect upon the fact that you are embarking on your next beginning — when you again begin to wonder and worry about your ability — but I have no worry about you — I have seen you succeed and know that you will again. When you reflect on it — you also know that you will do well. Murray Kahn Assistant Principal I awoke from a fitful sleep to a cold and dreary Febru- ary morning, the year 1947. Those familiar “butterflies” had been busy all night, a relentless reminder that I was soon to embark on an odyssey to a school far from home. The journey, which would take a little less than an hour and a half by trolley, subway, and foot, made for a particularly long day, given the odd class scheduling which did not provide me with a lunch period. School was divided into two sessions. My first class began at 12:49 PM. and my last ended at .5:20 P.M. As I walked to the trolley, I raised the collar of my pea coat to shield my face from the wind. The thought of eating dinner at 7:00 PM. elicited an impolite grumble from my stomach. I arrived at school unscathed, only to face an even greater trail: To write an essay of “EXACTLY” 100 words. A single word, more or less, would result in a grade of “0”. Could all this be worth it? After two weeks, I answered in the negative, and with mixed feelings, transferred from Stuyvesant to my local high school. Ev- ery so often I think back to those days, and wonder how my life would have been different had I remained. The graduates of the class of 1987 are fortunate. You will not have had to wonder, “What if . . . ?” Each and every day, you will have the opportunity to experience what it means to have been a Stuyvesant graduate. Best wishes for a happy and healthy future. Harold M. Then, as we reigned as eighth graders in our small circles close to home, we prepared in the backs of our minds to be the youngest again in the larger, more intricate pattern of people in high school. Little did we know that on the first day of orientation that fall, when we entered this building with avocado colored in- sides, that the people we borrowed pen- cils from would later become our boy- friends, girlfriends, best friends . . . It was in this year, when the teachers never failed to remind us that we were no longer in junior high school”, that we each made particular adjustments. Tor the first time we woke up before the sun and travelled to school from all boroughs under the same dark sky ... We learned not to question why rooms 213 and 214 were on opposite sides of the building. . . What had made us feel important or spe- cial seemed to be common. . . There were tests we had to study for, class work we were asked to think about. . . Some of us took our freshman year as a chance to begin again with new friends and new atti- tudes, and approach that the distance from our childhood permitted . . . Some of us learned to do cis others did to blend in, find a little space where we felt right, even if just for the moment, until we grew to feel the school was something of our Styles from the 1950's prevailed from bowling shirts, crew cut hair, old, beat up high school jackets (never from our own school) and large overcoats. It was a time when we experimented with our own indi- vidual look or hit Astor for the clone buzz. nonetheless, we left in June feeling very tired and a little more confident than when we had entered. Sophomore Year We didn t waste any time this year but headed straight for Stuyuesant Park in September. With the new computerized programming we found that four lunches and a study gave us plenty of time to make it to Marietta s and back for drafting. We were no longer frightened freshmen, and we weren't yet frustrated juniors. We were beginning to find our niches in sports, musicals, newspapers, student government. Sing and the social patterns. We went out, broke up, ate Frozefruits and pretzels, and began to relax. Yet at the same time we were reminded of reality by the crises both in and out of Stuyvesant — it was the year of the Vigilante contro- versy and one of focused attention on world hunger. Relationships and connec- tions were strengthened in oub immediate worlds, and the place that used to be dif- ferent and sometimes frightening to us suddenly changed to a comfortable, famil- iar setting that helped us to consider the larger scale problems distant from our im- mediate concerns. % rr 90 91 V 'A Junior Year Our older friends had warned us about it — every time we told people we were juniors they would reply, Sorry to hear that . We spent our Saturdays at Prince- ton Review and for the first time in our lives we were getting more mail than our parents. It was a year of national and in- ternational tragedy as newsclips of the Challenger, Chernoble and European ter- rorist attacks appeared in the papers regu- larly. The year reached many panic peaks with the end of the Bru Crew, the crack down on Crack ( Crack is Wack , said Run DNC), the AIDS scare and a very unusual Excursion Day — probably the last (tia!). With spring came personal triumph as we won Sing '86 and the season when much ofHYC's youth turned California, going for days in the same pair of Jams, checkered sneakers and glued to their skate boards. Just as we thought the year was over, an independent business firm brought us back for one last day of Physics Achieve- ments and S.A. T. s. We left the year feeling exhausted, relieved and numb. . s • v -'HHfUW'. 92 93 Senior Year Strengthened by the summer sun, we came back full prepared to assume our positions as the all mighty SEHIORS. It seemed that we had more keys — to the Spec office, the Indicator closet ... we were the Editors-in-Chief of all the news- papers and the captains of all the teams we were so worried about making fresh- man year. Our newly acquired power seemed to give us a second wind to carry us through the first term, as we delved into the AP zone and applications over- loaded our psyches with essays on mean- ingful experiences and relationships, what seemed to be do or die decisions on the future, and mechanical self-evalua- tion. It was difficult not to get caught in the hurricane whose pin point was placed on us. as we pulled through the January finals and our very self concerned atti- tudes into the second term. SECOND TERM. We licked the stamps for our last application, complained about schedules heavier than a 1 to 5, and graduation be- came a reality as we were measured for caps and gowns. We began to feel just a little twinge of sadness as we saw our kingdom being taken over slowly by younger classes. In the midst of ail the pomp and circumstance, we tried to sneak in a few more hours of Spring in the park, listening to You Be lilin' and laughing as we were finally free, though not quite sure what that meant for any of us. We would see each other again as we came back for reunions in a few years. But what were the chances of us all being to- gether again to watch Spring blossom in Stuy Park? 95 96 97 C.O.S.A. Arista forms a vital part of the Stuyvesant community, assisting in such lajor areas as ushering for school events, tutoring in and out of the school, organizing trips to colleges, visiting feeder fhools, (and processing vast quantities of extraneous paper.) Not to mention getting annoyed when people sneak into Cir picture. 103 SING Freshman year . . . “Sing Glorius Sing” . . . While political discussions often turn into dis- agreements and debates, and we can never all agree on any issue, the club is strengthened by the fact that we all think that it's still 1967. After admitting that, “horses come first,” members insist that the family aspect of the Equestrian Club not be overlooked. “It’s what we do to counter stress,” said one member who prefers to be identified only as ‘Horse’, “riding can get to be a very lonely experience.” Considering the awards members have won, including the USHA’s prestigious Golden Saddle, one would have to conclude that the Equestrian Club is on the right track. Cheng, Rcnny Fong, David Wing, Wahley Chan — (' President, Danny Cheng, Steve Chung — Co- President Since the dawn of time man has created miracles. In the ancient days there were the great pyramids of Egypt, the hanging gardens of Babylon, and aerosol cheese. '1 he}' called these miracles the Seven Wonders of the World, probably because that sounded better than Joe’s Collection of Pretty Neat- o Stuff. Stuyvesant High School, being the most prestigious school in New ork, is not without its own share of neat-o stuff. These are the great mysteries which we call SEVEN WONDERS OF STUYVESANT 1) I he Incredible Sinking Building. One of the first things that a new student at Stuyvesant notices is that the building is sinking, as the cornerstone on 15tli street clearly shows. The truth is that the building is not actually sinking (and no, the ground isn’t rising either.) Instead it’s all just an- other antic that those wild and crazy guys in the Junior Engineers Technological Society dreamed up. I hey put the entire building on hydraulic lifts and hooked it up so that the elevators don’t go up and down, the school rises and falls to meet it. This is the real reason that students aren’t allowed to use the elevators. 2) The Floor Plan. For freshmen, finding the way to a classroom can be a confusing mess. Of course for freshmen, so can tying a shoe. Still, the floor plan of Stuyvesant is certainly one of its great wonders. I he early history of Stuyvesant is shrouded in mayonaise, but recently discovered docu- ments reveal that when the school was first built there was a fight between the two architects in charge. The result was that one architect decided to screw up his partner’s otherwise neat, orderly floor plan by plotting the room numbers in base 13. The second architect retaliated by putting pillars in the middle of the gym. - STUYVESANT SCHOOL 132 3) Mr. Orna. No explanation necessary 4) Temporal Distortion Effect. The mysterious force in Stuyvesant which controls the random sounding of the five minute warning bells during class is also responsible- for an even more sinister phenomenon. Triggered by the announcement of a train delay, bizzare time warps snatch students up so that even if the LL only pulled in ten minutes late, they cannot get to class until the middle of second period. Believe it ... or not. 5) Sticky Feet. Stuyvesant’s cat stomping team swept through the season undefeated, without selling a single box of M M’s! “There are too many @! % cats!”, says captain Arthur Jolly, who speaks typeface, “I like to stomp their % @ %!! brains out!!” 6) The Program Office. Without which the school would be a mess of paperwork and bureaucracy. 7) The Freshmen. Or more specifically, the Freshman Theorum, which was proven by the first Westinghouse winner from Stuyvesant. In brief, the theorum says that if you let x= the average height of the freshman class, and x + y = the average height of the senior class where y varies directly as the cube of the graduat- ing year + the density of the cafeteria meat- loaf, it can be mathematically proven that the freshmen get smaller every year. QED. 8) The Eighth Wonder. Seven wonders are more than enough for anyone, but the eighth wonder is that Stuyvesant actually has eight wonders! The eighth wonder was discovered by two students during an espe- cially boring particle physics class. Eight wonders. Gosh, it’s things like this that really make Stuyvesant High School a spe- cial place. Lift SCHOOL 134 135 Sophomore year proved to be the end of the scramble for the hundred or so lockers in Stuyvesant. Finally, everyone had one, and we happily stuffed them with coats and BOARD OP EDUCATION OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK STUYVESANT HIGH SCHOOL 345 EAST 15th STREET. NEW YORK. NEW YORK. 10003 ABRAHAM BAl All.! HRINUHM November 14, 1986 Dear Mr. Rogers: All the children born in 1969 will be graduating from high school this June. This year, those children are applying to college, making career plans and, although they might not realize it, are slowly saying goodbye to a big part of their lives - their childhood. While making such important decisions about the future, the Stuyvesant High School Class of 87 is also trying to remember our past and capture it in our yearbook. Indicator. The theme this year is reflections, so we've been thinking about our coming of age and the people who influenced our lives, we were probably the first generation to grow up with Mr. Rogers' Neigh- borhood and one can see the results in our personalities. You were one of the first teachers who taught us that everybody's different and that you liked us for who we were. Your role in developing our individuality was a crucial one. We consider Stuyvesant to be a place where no two people are the same; originality thrives in these halls. Now, it is difficult for us to maintain our individuality and, at the same time, meet the uniform standards of people who seem to hold so much of our futures in their hands. Just as you were there in the beginning of our childhood, we'd like you to be at our entrance into adulthood. The lessons you taught us are as relevant nov as they were then. And so, the Stuyvesant High School Class of '87 is asking you to address our class in a letter to be published in our year- book. We would like to hear whatever you would like to say. There is a time factor to consider - we go to print in February. Regardless of receiving a reply, we want you to know what an inpact you have had on us. We will always be individuals who judge people by what is inside. unnecessarily massive history books. However welcome these lockers might have been, the school storage units most memorable must always be cubbies. Cubbies — the ones we could fit our young bodies into, cushioned by coats, our faces brushed by mittens suspended by mitten clips. Now, our classrooms smell like shark and sulfur, instead of Crayola and Elmers glue. Nevertheless, things often appear on TV, in a store display, or in conversation that bring back memories of a time when we were many inches shorter and a few years younger: Tuesday night television triple feature, the Hustle, Wacky Packs, Sasson, jacks, . . . The list is endless and different for everyone. Also in the days of old there was someone who told us to expect to be different and that that was okay. Mr. Rogers, with his sneakers, fish food, and Land of Make Believe, was a familiar face to many of us. Thank you. Sincerely, y, Courtney Lichterman and Risa Lasher Co-Editors, Indicator '87 136 NEW YORK S FIRST SCIENCE high SCHOOL MISTE NEIGHBORHOOD Family Communications Inc 4802 Fifth Attnut Pittsburgh. Penuiyhanu 1521 412 68 2990 January, 1987 Seniors of Stuyvesant High School 345 East 15th Street New York, New York 10003 Dear Neighbors of the Class of '87: What an important time for you to be reflecting. In one of our songs, the words are, In the long, long trip of growing, there are stops along the way ... for a look at yesterday. Graduation is about yesterday and tomorrow. It is a wonderful mixture of an ending and a beginning, full of many different feelings: excitement, pride, and relief, but at the same time, loneliness, frustration, and concern. You're all going to be taking such big steps towards your future. No wonder you're wanting to look back. Looking back does help with the future. Even though you can't know the future right now, you certainly can have lots of wishes and dreams about where you might be and what you might do with your lives. There's so much in our past that we care about that we base our wishes on. Wishing doesn't make anything happen, but it certainly can be the start of some important happenings. I hope you’ll feel good enough about yourself, your yesterdays and your todays, that you'll wish and dream all you can. And that you'll do all you can to help the best of your wishes come true. Please know that I'm thinking of you and am very grateful that you've grown into the young adults you already are. Thank you for keeping us the leader in SAT preparation. Thanks to you, every year since 1938 we've been number one in SAT preparation. Ever since we started with our first class of eight, we’ve played a part in the lives of over 100,000 high school students, pre- paring them emotionally and intellectually for the SAT. We know were successful because our students are—many increasing their SAT scones 150, 200, 250 points, or more. It’s 48 years and over 120 centers later. We’re still students’ first choice for SAT prep and that makes us very proud. 1KAPLAN STANLEY H. KAPLAN EDUCATIONAL CENTER LTD. I’m sorry, Miss Medcalff—I didn’t hear the ques- tion. Well I know it’s Spring, Deenie, but try to pay more attention. I quoted some lines from Words- worth’s “Ode to Immortality.” Deenie, did you hear them? I’m afraid not Miss Medcalff. Well then I must ask you to turn your text to page 380. Yes . . . You read the lines to me. Yes . . . Stand please! Though nothing can bring back the hour Of splendor in the grass Of glory in the flowers, We will grieve not rather find strength in what remains behind.” Now perhaps you an tell me exactly what the poet means by such expressions as splendor in the grass, glory in the flowers . . . Well, I think it has some . . . Yes . . . Well, when we’re young, we looked at life very idealistically, I guess . . . And I think Wordsworth means that when we grow up, we have to forget the ideals of youth and find strength . . . 288 —“Splendor in the Grass” 289 290 I saw the smiles. 1 saw the smiles of my friends, and the smiles of my teachers, and I lived each day for the smile of that girl in my English class. Cheerful smiles, knowing smiles, and smiles that said things like Hey, it's going to be all right , or Thank God it's Friday (even if it wasn't). 291 There's a sound across the alley of cold metal touching skin and you can see if you look in her window that she cut her hair again in straight lines, those soft, golden lights in the morning are now on her wooden floor— the wind has swept them through the apartment she wont need them anymore. —Suzanne Vega 293 It was incomprehensible; 1 had proffered the question in the most gracious, pear-shaped tones. I had bowed as my ballet teacher had taught me, from the waist down. 1 had spent thirty-eight dollars in the Paramus K- Mart, selecting my clothes for this auspicious day. I had rehearsed the sentence infinite times in front of my bathroom mirror. Therefore, it irked me more than somewhat that Mirna Blandish-Loft had refused to be my lab partner... 296 Eating Habits: Freshmen year you bring your lunch three to four times a week. You buy something from the cafeteria —once. French fries from the Zion Deli can be brought to the park . . . With sophomore year comes the advent of Dilly Deli as well as the pretzel man in the lobby. Leisurely lunches at Stavy's become popular . . . Junior year you start grabbing food anywhere and if you have the time —the little window by the cafeteria is your home away from home. Your mom complains about how malnourished you look . . . Senior year brings on the reinstitution of the leisurely lunch —preferably two or three periods long. 297 300 People have such delicate balances after traveling an hour or more on the subway.” Everyone had waterguns — not just pistols, but machine guns.” ... all those anonymous, laughing faces, those bodies clad in stark black and white and the unsteady, drunken laughter.” 301 I remember Mr. McDonald telling us to look around the green room and feel the beauty of the architecture. I remember the first time I saw the band room. I was so im- pressed by the way the floor had levels. I saw cellos and basses in front of my face instead of on t.v. . Then when 1 was placed in a seat at the top, I felt so great because I had a veiw of all the other instru- ments. 302 303 Mind like a floating white cloud Sunset like the parting of old acquaintances who bow over their clasped hands at a distance Our horses neigh to each other as we are departing. —Li Po 304 PETER RABBIT
