,,., L., Tom Bain, Henry Sal, Jim Zemaitis, Eric Scott Computer Society The Computer Society is advised by Mr. Jacob Rosenrauch of the Mathematics Department. The school has an IBM model 1130 computer equipped with card punch, card reader and keyboard f typewriter systems. The Computer Society Members help their teachers by operating the computer during their free periods. They also teach FORTRAN to students interested in computer program- ming, but are unable to enroll in the MC-1 or MC-2 classes. Book Club The Book Club is a relatively new organization in Stuyvesant, start- ed in October 1975. It was orga- nized so that students could read and discuss selected literary works. CARMEN, LES MISER- ABLES, and BENEATH THE WHEEL are some of the books read last year. The members form small committees that concen- trate on discussing a particular book, story, or author. Radio Club The RADIO CLUB was founded more than 55 years ago and is still going strong. The club was designed to facilitate the practice of amateur radio Cham radioj operation. With their advisor, Mr. Gar- anes, the members have established two new divisions: the Citizen Band and Broadcast branches. The Broadcast sys- tem, WSTY, began its operation in late January. Debating Team The Debating Team was formed last year by Jon Darnell and Victor Houser. This year, with the help of its faculty advisor, Mr. Tom Dolan, the Debating Team was able to compete at major tournaments sponsored by the State Forensic League on the novice level, as well as a varsity tournament at Harvard University. Jon and Victor have also debated on the WNBC television program, Positively Blackn. Chess Team The Chess Team is one of the best teams in the nation. In 1975, the team placed 2nd in the U.S. Com- petition and finished lst in the Greater N.Y. High School Chess Championship Tournament. In 1976, we were the only public high school to enter the U.S. Championships, placing 4th, ,lit FRONT ROW- Kenny Friedman, Spencer Siskind, Anders Weinstein, Eric Elowitz, Mr. Dolan. Bridge Club The Bridge Club is an offshoot of the Chess Team. Its members used to play in the hall until it became apparent that many of these people were also members of the Chess Team. The Bridge Club be- gan to meet jointly with the Chess Team, but now is an independently chartered organization. It conducts tournaments among its members. Magic Club The MAGIC CLUB meets once a week under the supervi- sion of Mr. Baronat, its faculty advisor. Each week the mem- bers introduce various new tricks,'. The club performs at school events such as Interna- tional Night, and the Festival of the Arts. The Gourmet Cooking Club meets on al- ternate Wednesdays. Cathy Carey and Patty Buchman were instrumental in starting the club. Its purpose is to discuss the culinary arts and try out unusual foods. Mr. Michael Marks is the club advisor.
