NEW YORK'S FIRST SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL FOUNDED l904 S'll'lUYVlESAN'll' HllGH SCHOOL 345 EAST I5+h STREET. NEW YORK. NEW YORK IOOO3 Gaspar R. Fabbricante ORegon 3-9030 Principal Dear Graduates: During most of your high school career your education was affected in a number of ways by the agonizing fiscal crisis of the city, taking its toll on you and all concerned with your education. Draconian budget cuts and the resulting reduction of educational services curtailed sharply the affluent life we had come to enjoy and almost expect. It was inconceivable to anyone as you began your high school career, that this great city could virtually be brought to its knees as it teetered on the brink of bankruptcy and collapse. Translated into the daily life style of our school, the budget crisis meant enormous class sizes, fwhere for a time you may have shared a seat or sat on the window sillj reduction in the number and variety of course offerings and the dismissal of teachers who, for lack of seniority, were excessed or laid off. It was a painful lesson in economics which you learned the hardest way of all, through deprivation and neglect of our nation's most important resource, education. It was a case of the classroom imitation, or more properly, reflecting life, putting to rout the jibes of critics who maintain that our students are out of touch with the real world. As the economic storm clouds gathered over our city, many of us feared that the damage to our school left in the wake of the crisis would prove irreparable and that we in public education might not survive the anticipated disaster. And then in some curious way we found that you, the students, refusing to be panicked, had risen to the challenge. With maturity beyond your years, understanding, patience and compassion, you began to improvise and innovate where materials, supplies and tools were not available. When the corridors, cafeteria, gym and stairwells became overcrowded you became more solicitous than ever for the welfare of others with a high degree of self control, respect and courtesy. In short, you took a bad situation and made it bearable. There is no fear for the future prospects of a class that has withstood these onslaughts and come out with a rich harvest of scholarships, awards and honors. We thank you for adding your chapter to the illustrious history of Stuyvesant High and we applaud you for standing by your school and your city in these dark days as we await a happier future and an improved climate for public education. Congratulations on your graduation and all good wishes for happiness and continued success. Sincerely, 0LM Gaspar R. Fabbricante Principal
