Social Studies The Social Science Department, headed by Mrs. Viv- ian Gluck, is constantly trying to keep its curriculum flexible and up to date. Accordingly, the department has made several changes this year, including a revi- sion of the freshman history course. The department offers electives in Labor Studies, Urban Problems, Sociology, Political Theory and Law Studies. An Ad- vanced Placement History course may be taken by qualified seniors for college credit. The Social Science Department sponsors many out- side programs including Bicentennial Scholars and the Urban Studies Seminar. The department, work- ing with the Student Union, sponsors the Model United Nations and the Model Congress. It also su- pervises the Forum fthe Social Studies Clubj which publishes FORUM magazine. The Social Science Department was glad to have both Mr. E. J. Lugo and Mr. Donald McGuire join the staff this year. Mr. Arnold Bellush is the Coordinator of Student Affairs fC.O.S.A.J. He is responsible for coordinating and supervis- ing all of Stuyvesant's extra- and co-curricular activities. Mr. Bellush also counsels and instructs the Student Union and its officers. Serving on the STP, he often acts as a liason between the students and the administration. Mr. DePalma, the program- ming chairman, and his com- mittee are responsible for put- ting the teachers, students, and subjects all together to form a smoothly running program. Mr. DePalma is usually bom- barded with complaints and numerous requests for pro- gram changes. Thanks to the dedication of Mr. DePalma, most of the students get the right classes and are satisfied with their programs. Mr. Myron Wechsler, the school's College Advisor, is in charge of the College Office which distributes information concerning CEEB, ACT, and other tests. He helps seniors make arrangements for finan- cial aid and scholarships and supervises college application processing. He keeps in close contact with colleges, the Board of Education, and social agencies in order to obtain up- to-date information. Arnold Bellush Leonard Crapanzano C. O. S. A. Dean Anthony DePalma Ralph Ferrara Programming Guidance Counselor W4 if X if .wail fa' Myron Wechsler Ron Cancemi College Advisor Beverly Katz Mr. Leonard Crapanzano is Stuyvesant High School's Dean. His job involves dealing with students who have disci- plinary problems, excessive ab- sences or are repeated cutters. Students can also talk to Mr. Crapanzano about problems with teachers, their peers, or their overall adjustment to the Stuyvesant environment. Mr. Crapanzano is always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needs him. Mr. Ferrara, the only Guid- ance Counselor at Stuyvesant High School, handles often- irate teachers, upset students, and distraught parents, while teaching three biology classes a day. He works with the Pro- gram, College and Attendance Offices, as well as the depart- ment chairmen, in an effort to keep the school running smoothly. He can be found in the Guidance Office, always ready to lend a helping hand. S.P.A.R.K. has been described as a place where students can come and talk about whatever is on their minds. Mr. Can- cemi, who replaced Mrs. Katz as the S.P.A.R.K. coordinator, explains that although S.P.A.R.K. is funded as a drug prevention program it is also a place where students can talk about their problems. There are group sessions as well as individual conferences.
