Mathematics The Mathematics Department, chaired by Mr. Ed- ward Marcantonio, is one of the finest Mathematics Departments in the country. All students must com- plete Elementary Algebra, Geometry and Intermedi- ate Algebra-Trigonometry. Qualified students may choose from the following electives: Modern Analy- sis, Calculus, Computer Math, the History of Math- ematics or Unified Mathematics. The Mathematics Department sponsors the Math Society and supervises the publication of the MATH SURVEY. It is also in charge of the Math Resource Center, which allows students to undertake indepen- dent studies. The Math Team, under the guidance and coaching of Mr. Barry Glotzer, has continued to excel in national and international competition. Mrs. Anna Tunis retired and Mrs. Susan Brustein joined the department due to the tragic death of Mrs. Irene Finkel. Mechanical Drawing And Fine Arts The Mechanical Drawing and Fine Arts Department chaired by Mr. Anthony Valenti offers a wide range of courses which enable the students to express their creativity. All students are required to take two terms of Mechanical Drawing. A ten-period shop elective is re- quired of all seniors. The shop courses offered at Stuyvesant High School include Architectural Drafting, Photography and Basic Art. In the Architectural Drafting class, taught by Mr. Scotti, students learn the fundamentals of structural design. The Photography classes, taught by Mr. Valenti and Mr. Gordon, allow the students the oppor- tunity to do very creative projects. The Basic Art class, taught by Mr. Gross, Mr. Spoerri, and Mr. Rosen, designs the posters for the many musical and dramatic performances throughout the school year. ff KY Anthony Valenti Fred Gordon Rima Kustin Leslie Rosen Music The Music Department, supervised by Mr. Max Watras, produces several fine musical groups. The Symphonic Orchestra, the Symphon- ic Band, Chorus, and Madrigal Singers perform at the Winter and Spring Concerts. The Stage Band has its own concerts and also performs at such functions as College Night, Orientation Night and various faculty parties. In addition, there are piano recitals, several performances given by the Woodwind Ensemble, the String Quartet, and the Brass Quartet. A Mr. Watras, the Music Department, and the student performers can always be counted on to liven up the year with their enjoyable recitals. ,,n, 'K ,. I Max Watras
