Black Students League Oriental Club . Q? f l ,,,. ,.,, , ' r f f '1 'u -.. .,.. The Black Students' League is an organization catering to the Black and Hispanic students of Stuyvesant. Originally started as the Afro-American Society in 1968, the club flourished un- der the supervision of Mrs. Olga Cooke. Many years later the name was changed to U.N- .I.K.U.K.U., which is an acro- nym derived from the seven principles of blackness fNguzo Sabaj: Umoja, Nia, Kujijagu- lia, Imani, Ujima, Kuum- ' baand, Ujamaa. The main pur- pose of the club is to promote y the unity, understanding, and l self respect of Black and His- panic students. In 1975 the name of the club was changed to the Black Students' League. The Oriental Club is one of the many ethnic clubs at Stuyvesant. The club holds weekly meetings to discuss cultural and social aspects of Oriental life. The club sponsors a number of group outings which help to make the students aware of the many oriental customs and arts. The club has often organized outings with other Asian and Oriental groups throughout the New York City area. Each year the club forms a coed basketball team which com- petes with other Oriental club teams in the city.

Ski Club The Ski Club, under the supervi- sion of Mr. Gordon and co-presi- dents Lisa Hirschhorn and Carla Wohl, organizes ski trips throughout the winter to ski re- -.., sorts in the northeastern U.S. In addition to several short trips, the club also sponsors a week long trip to Canada. Seekers The Seekers Club is composed of students interested in learn- ing about each other and ex- ploring the Christian religion. Joy Eng, the student organizer of the club, expressed it as be- ing a place people can discuss the Bible and other related lit- erature. They exchange many ideas and find both academic and moral support. The Seek- ers Club is an active organiza- tion which holds lively discus- sions on Christianity of yester- day, today and tomorrow. In addition, the members sing songs and go on outings. Ukranian Club The Ukranian Club has been meeting ap- proximately seven years, and Mr. Hen- dricks is its advisor. The club's main pur- pose is to make Stuyvesantians aware of Ukranians and their Culture and contri- butions to America. Ukranians are not Russians and they want people to be aware of the fact that their culture and language is very differ- ent from that of Russia. In order to achieve their purpose and gain identifica- tion, the Ukranian Club has participated in various events such as International Night, The Ukranian Festival, and the celebration of the U.S. Bicentennial.
