FABBRICANTE, PRINCIPAL Mali ,W NEW YORK'S FIRST SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL FOUNDED l904 S'll'lUYVlESAN'll' HllGH SCHOOL 345 EAST I5+h STREET. NEW YORK. NEW YORK IOOO3 Gaspar R. Fabbricante ORegon 3-9030 Principal Dear Graduates: During most of your high school career your education was affected in a number of ways by the agonizing fiscal crisis of the city, taking its toll on you and all concerned with your education. Draconian budget cuts and the resulting reduction of educational services curtailed sharply the affluent life we had come to enjoy and almost expect. It was inconceivable to anyone as you began your high school career, that this great city could virtually be brought to its knees as it teetered on the brink of bankruptcy and collapse. Translated into the daily life style of our school, the budget crisis meant enormous class sizes, fwhere for a time you may have shared a seat or sat on the window sillj reduction in the number and variety of course offerings and the dismissal of teachers who, for lack of seniority, were excessed or laid off. It was a painful lesson in economics which you learned the hardest way of all, through deprivation and neglect of our nation's most important resource, education. It was a case of the classroom imitation, or more properly, reflecting life, putting to rout the jibes of critics who maintain that our students are out of touch with the real world. As the economic storm clouds gathered over our city, many of us feared that the damage to our school left in the wake of the crisis would prove irreparable and that we in public education might not survive the anticipated disaster. And then in some curious way we found that you, the students, refusing to be panicked, had risen to the challenge. With maturity beyond your years, understanding, patience and compassion, you began to improvise and innovate where materials, supplies and tools were not available. When the corridors, cafeteria, gym and stairwells became overcrowded you became more solicitous than ever for the welfare of others with a high degree of self control, respect and courtesy. In short, you took a bad situation and made it bearable. There is no fear for the future prospects of a class that has withstood these onslaughts and come out with a rich harvest of scholarships, awards and honors. We thank you for adding your chapter to the illustrious history of Stuyvesant High and we applaud you for standing by your school and your city in these dark days as we await a happier future and an improved climate for public education. Congratulations on your graduation and all good wishes for happiness and continued success. Sincerely, 0LM Gaspar R. Fabbricante Principal Dear Seniors: I am happy to have grown with you since I officially began my job when many of you began your careers at Stuyvesant. I have enjoyed watch- ing you develop into the capable, mature students you are today. You have improved the tone of Stuyvesant by your eagerness and love for the school. Members of your class have strengthened both the curricular and extra-curricular activi- ties in our school. I want to wish all of you the best success in life, knowing that you have the capabilities to continue improving everything you are involved in. Good luck to all. Sincerely, Murray Kahn Assistant Principal Administration Murray Kahn . , Dear Graduates: H V During a recent discussion friends told me they would ' Y 2? not consider having children if they E were getting married in 1976. They explained their feelings by stating that their children, if born, would probably grow up into a society worse than they themselves are experiencing today. There would be more crime, pollution, infla- tion, famine, unemployment, rising costs of education, and global tension. Hopefully, the disillu- sionment expressed by my contemporaries is not shared by the members of the Stuyvesant class of 1977. All of us look to you, and succeeding gen- erations of intelligent young men and women, to help make the world better for all humanity. This is a responsiblity with which we charge you. I know that as graduates of one of the best high schools in the country you will be capable of meeting this challenge. ,am Sincerely, Atufw-3-41 UP! ' Harold M. For the first time, General Science is being offered to freshmen as an alternative to the more traditional Earth Science course. In addition to the one year Regents Biology course, the department offers many fascinating electives, including: Environmental Stud- ies, Biological Research, Zoological Techniques, and the Advanced Placement course which is offered to qualified seniors for college credit. The Biology Department sponsors the Bio-Med Soci- ety, which provides students with information on dif- ferent aspects of modern medicine. It publishes the BIO-MED TIMES, which contains many medically related articles. This year our Biology students had the greatest number of members in the Junior Acade- my of Sciences. All students are required to complete a minimum of a year course in Chemistry and a year course in Physics. A wide variety of elec- tives are offered in both sciences. In Chemistry, stu- dents may choose from Qualitative Analysis, Organic Chemistry and Advanced Placement Chemistry. The Physics program includes electives such as Astron- omy, Mechanics, Electricity, Advanced Placement Physics, Electronics and the Philosophy of Science. There have been several changes in the department this year. Mr. William LeSeur retired from the Phys- ics Department last June. Mr. Norman Horenstein returned from his sabbatical this September, and Miss Daisy Furth joined the department. Unfortu- nately, Mr. Thomas Micklow has been ill for the entire fall term. These electives cover many areas including: Creative Writing, Journalism, Black Identity, Elizabethan Drama, and the Feminine Im- age in Literature. Students may take any of these electives in place of the regular English course. This enables students to study those areas of the literary world they find most interesting. During the course of the school year, the department invites several poets and playwrights to come and discuss their works with the English classes. The English Department sponsors CALIPER, the literary magazine of the school, as well as SPECTA- TOR, the official school newspaper. The Department was fortunate to add Ms. Judith Meisels to its staff. Mr. Crapanzano is always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needs him. Mr. Ferrara, the only Guid- ance Counselor at Stuyvesant High School, handles often- irate teachers, upset students, and distraught parents, while teaching three biology classes a day. He works with the Pro- gram, College and Attendance Offices, as well as the depart- ment chairmen, in an effort to keep the school running smoothly. He can be found in the Guidance Office, always ready to lend a helping hand. S.P.A.R.K. has been described as a place where students can come and talk about whatever is on their minds. Mr. Can- cemi, who replaced Mrs. Katz as the S.P.A.R.K. coordinator, explains that although S.P.A.R.K. is funded as a drug prevention program it is also a place where students can talk about their problems. There are group sessions as well as individual conferences. Grade Advisors Cutbacks this year have forced markedly reduced guidance services. There are only three Grade Advi- sors in the school: Dr. Strudler, Mrs. Ferrara, and Mr. Rittermann. They each work in the Guidance Office two periods a day. Aiding them are four part-time Grade Advisors: Mr. Becker, Mr. Glotzer, Mr. Rubinstein and Mr. Weinberg. Lacking experience and size from the outset, the football team still had enough y pride and courage to consistently train hard and to I dutifully prepare for each game. Following a promis- ing first game against Wagner, the season went downhill. After its loss to Lehman, all the hard work I and disappointments that the players had endured during the season finally succeeded in demoralizing the team. In a season with a 0 and 9 record no one can be called a hero, but there are some players that deserve special mention. Chrys Nicholas, Tom Cala- bro, Dave Kugler, Gregg Turkin, and Geoffrey Ca- brera played some excellent games on defense, led by defensive captain Laurence McCreary. Captain Al Carlton led the offensive backfield and was helped by Lucky Metalios and Andy Koukoulas. Glenn Fron- tera was a clutch pass receiver on the struggling offense. Captain Tom'Ryan was out most of the season with injuries. Despite the disappointing results of the season, the Peglegs are still a team of which we can be proud. Perhaps the new players will take the Peglegs to a division title next year. If they do, maybe this year's seniors will feel a little more satisfied for having helped the underclassmen along. Dynamic ex- hibitions of quickness, skill, and timing were given by Elena Glasberg, Dana Gvildys, Vietta Johnson, and Karen Immergut. Juliet Miller deserves Rookie of the Year honors. None of this would have been possible without a great coach. She is talented, knowledgeable, soft-spoken, but firm. She doesnlt have to demand respect - she automatically gets it. Although the competitive season lasts only from April to June, Stuyvesantian tennis players are on the courts all year long. In the fall, the team practices at its home courts located along the F. D. R. Drive. This winter a tourna- ment ladder was played for the first time to decide the starting positions and alter- nate players for the team. The success of this tournament was due to the personal initiative of the individual team members and the capable management of Me- ganne McLinden. This spring, the team is hoping to im- prove last yearls record, which was a respectable 5-3. That record might well have been better, all three defeats were as close as one set. Last season had many highlights, includ- ing the play of the first doubles team of Geoff Rogers and Jeff Bail who were un- defeated throughout the season and went on to win the City Championship. They have graduated, but there are some tal- ented holdovers from last year's team, notably Josh Chanin, who played first singles last year as a sophomore and is expected to play the same slot this year. Josh Chanin and Mike Rakijas are both team captains. Also returning from last year are Robert Fisher, Marc Seltzer, Jens Robinson, Paul Stern, Paul Schul- man, Peter Good, Eric Berman and Greg Wirshba. During the course of the year it makes recommenda- tions on financial requests and oversees all spending There is more to Stuyvesant than classes and tests. After three o'clock and during the school day itself, students have a chance to participate in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities. For aspiring journalists, there are many student-run publications to choose from. In addition to the official school paper, Spectator, there are departmental publications such as Kaleidoscope, Forum, Caliper, The Math Survey, BioMed Times, and Nucleus. These publications offer students the chance to learn how to run a paper or magazine. Those students interested in the ,behind-the-scenes running of the school may join the Student Union. Thereis the Senate, the budget committee, the Student- Parent-Teacher committee, and many other political committes on which stu- dents may serve. Stuyvesant also has a sports program that is very successful. Our teams compete in city-wide meets and games, and many go on to win divisional titles. In addition to athletic teams, we have a Math team and a Chess team which are outstanding, and are nationally recognized for their excellence. There are many clubs at Stuyvesant: ethnic clubs, language clubs, a ski club, cheerleaders, pre-professional clubs, and many more. Some of the more differ- ent clubs include: the Star Trek Club, the Rapid Transit Club, and the Video- taping Society. Students who have an interest that is not represented in one of the existing clubs may apply for a charter to start their own club. Our extensive drama program includes the popular Sing competition. The music program is both choraland instrumental. Indicator '77 Many crises beset the Indicator staff this year. First, there was the resignation of Miss Lynch from her position as faculty advisor. For a long time the Indicator had neither publisher nor photographerg both of these were major obstacles. People like Michael Solomon and the layout staff were of extreme value in overcoming the problems faced in completing the book. Natalie Byfield often had to type by moonlight. Mrs. Susan Brustein came to the rescue of the Indicator, and considering it was the first time she had ever been given the responsibility of advising the staff of a major publication did a noteworthy job. There were also many who worked diligently in the background. The Indicator staff owes special thanks to Hon Tsang for his invaluable assistance. Through Mr. Arluck's leadership, the club hopes to be more than just a place to play chess. The club is now affili- ated with the United States Chess Federation, and plans to conduct nationally rated tour- naments. The Black Students' League is an organization catering to the Black and Hispanic students of Stuyvesant. Originally started as the Afro-American Society in 1968, the club flourished un- der the supervision of Mrs. Olga Cooke. Many years later the name was changed to U.N- .I.K.U.K.U., which is an acro- nym derived from the seven principles of blackness fNguzo Sabaj: Umoja, Nia, Kujijagu- lia, Imani, Ujima, Kuum- ' baand, Ujamaa. The main pur- pose of the club is to promote y the unity, understanding, and l self respect of Black and His- panic students. In 1975 the name of the club was changed to the Black Students' League. The Oriental Club is one of the many ethnic clubs at Stuyvesant. The club holds weekly meetings to discuss cultural and social aspects of Oriental life. The club sponsors a number of group outings which help to make the students aware of the many oriental customs and arts. The club has often organized outings with other Asian and Oriental groups throughout the New York City area. Each year the club forms a coed basketball team which com- petes with other Oriental club teams in the city. Seekers The Seekers Club is composed of students interested in learn- ing about each other and ex- ploring the Christian religion. Joy Eng, the student organizer of the club, expressed it as be- ing a place people can discuss the Bible and other related lit- erature. They exchange many ideas and find both academic and moral support. The Seek- ers Club is an active organiza- tion which holds lively discus- sions on Christianity of yester- day, today and tomorrow. In addition, the members sing songs and go on outings. Its members consist of the varsity teams' captains and Mr. Moscowitz. Monthly meetings are held to discuss ways to build up the athletic program, plan various schoolwide events, organize school athletic func- tions, and to strengthen school spirit. This year, the council has attempted to raise funds for the school athletic pro- gram. Season sports passes were sold and juice machines were installed in the locker rooms. They are: Chorus, Madrigal Singers, Stage Band, Symphonic Band and Symphonic Orchestra. John Barousg Andrea Oser: The Chorus is a vital part of the Music Department. Its members are students who are programmed for MU-6, a music class, or who volunteer to join during their free fifth period. They perform at all the school concerts. They also bring joy to hospital patients at Christmas with their caroling. The Madrigal Singers is a relatively new part of the Department. They often perform songs of an Ecclesiastical nature. They are accompanied by recorders and violins. Mr. Pomer- antz coordinates both the Chorus and Madrigal Madrigal Singers The Stage Band is one of Stuyvesant's finest ex- tra-curricular organizations. The band performs a wide range of music. In addition to their annual concert in school, the band performs at the annual Parent's Association Dinner Dance at the Brook- lyn Navy Yard. They also perform at other Stuyve- sant functions in and out of school. The Stuyvesant H. S. Stage Band is a fine example of the high caliber of performance in the Music Department. The Symphonic Band has been an important part of the Music Department for many years. Each year, the band performs at the Winter and Spring Concerts. The band performs a great variety of musical works, everything from Greigg to Gersh- win. One additional advantage of band is that par- ticipating seniors are exempt from the 10 period shop requirement. Each year the Symphonic Band, directed by Mr. Max Watras, plays at graduation. Mr. Watras also directs the Stage Band. Stuyvesant's Music Department is a very impor- tant part of the cultural experience at Stuyvesant. ll Chorus YJSVAQ.
