Smart Weinberg Maryann Ferrara The Mathematics Department, under the supervision of Mr. Edward Marcantonio, has continued its extensive programs in all levels of Mathematics. Algebra, Geometry and Intermediate Algebra-Trigonometry are required of all students. Some qualified students may elect to take an honor sequence in these courses. Seniors may choose to continue their mathematics by taking Twelfth Year Calculus. Other electives are available too. A study in Computer Math is offered in the junior or senior years. This course gives the student a basic knowledge of Fortran, and allows him to become familiar with out IBM 1130. A new course in the history of Math was offered for the first time this year and was taught by Mr. Alden, Mrs. Schwartz and Mr. Rosenrauch continued their course in Unified Mathematics. The idea of the course is to break down the traditional components of mathematics and deal with it as a unified structure, Mrs. Finkel, as always, produced fine junior and senior Math Teams. Every one of these dedicated mathematicians practice every morning and compete for a spot on the starting team. Ungoing projects this year are the Math Resource Center which allows students to do independent study with guidance, the publication of The Mathematics Survey and the Mathematics Society which produces excellent speakers in various areas of Mathematics.
