FABBRICANTE ORSQOH 19030 Principal June 1976 Dear Graduates: Two centuries ago almost to this very day, a handful of genteel revolutionaries and visionaries embarked on an experiment in democracy unique in a tired and despotic old world. Fternlty was in that moment. Almost from the start, a pillar of that new nat1on's faith was an unshakable conviction that its youth ought to be educated free and universally with a new emphasis on the worth of the individual. Since that genesis, educational fads and fashions have come and gone but that original and glorious precept has stood the test of time. For three quarters of a century now our school has educated New York's sons and more recently, daughters, in a free and public way, adding as well, the opportunity for the intel- lectually gifted to develop their talents unfettered by any restraints. We, the faculty, like to believe that we have contributed to your success and happiness by nleading outn from you, fthe true etymological definition of the Latin neducarenl abilities and powers which we then helped you to develop. Your illustrious record of scholarships, awards and honors is evidence of how successful our partnership has been. But the most precious reward of all will be an 1n- tensely intimate and private one as you enjoy fully a life made rich by knowledge and wisdom gained from your studies. Jonathan Swift would have you seek out nthe two most noblest things -- sweetness and l1ght.U May your learning never cease but grow in scope and variety, to be used ultimately for the betterment of our country and all mankind. NATIONAL Nl SEIVII-FINALI The National Merit Scholarship Program selected 15,000 students as semifinalists in the 1976 competition. Twenty-two of these students are Stuyvesantians. Semifinalists represent less than one half of one percent of American High School Seniors. The selection of semifinalists is based on PSATXNMSQT scores. Scholarship winners are determined by SAT scores. Scholastic average, extracuricular activities and a counselor's recommendation. Over 9512 of Stuyvesant semifinalists become finalists. Stuyvesant congratulates all our semifinalists become finalists on this truly significant achievement and wishes them continued success in their future The National Achievement Scholarship Program for Outstanding Negro Students will award scholarships to approximately 500 superior black high school seniors in 1976. This year thirteen Stuyvesant students have been selected as semifinalists by this program. About 1,500 semifinalists were chosen from over 50,000 applicants who took the PSATXNMSQT exam. ln order to become a finalist, a semifinalist must meet stringent academic and extra- curricular standards. Unlike the urbanites of Stuyvesant, the members of the Backpacking Club are well aware that there is more to the outdoors than Central Park. The focus of the club is to organize individual and group trips into the mountains of the Southern Catskills. Although confined to these molehills, the group compensates by finding secluded, desolate areas. Then not planning an excursion, the group meets often to watch films and listen to guest speakers. The Club is also instructed in mountaineering techniques, first aid, environmental and geological studies. The Backpacking Club is a consistent, faithful group devoted to a common goal of awareness. The Club consists of students who want to learn or who already know, the graceful movements of Modern dance. Students can express their emotions through their dance to those watching. Competition may become part of the group's activities. The Bicentennial Club expands the idea of bringing back the past, observing the present and predicting and looking forward to the future. lts primary functions are to publish the bicentennial section in Forum, to get involved in the annual International Night, to decorate the bulletin boards, and possibly produce a show composed of skits and songs. Their advisor, Mr. Julius Perlman, provides information concerning history, literature, and current events. The leaders Ghada Captan and Susan Karavanic, call meetings once l every Friday after school in Mr. l Perlman's office. The Association -of Foreign Students or AFS is a club involved with Foreign Student Exchange Programs. The members arrange for foreign students to come to America and sample our way of living and learning. During his stay, the foreign student lives with a family and becomes a temporary member of that family by experiencing and living as they do. This program provides the student with a chance to broaden his horizon and knowledge, not just through reading, but through experiencing. Since this year because of budget cuts the time allotted to the senior yearbook preparation was cut in half, the yearbook staff respectfully declaims responsibility for errors. We have worked diligently and carefully and hope you are satisfied. RAPHJ CHESSTEAMH ,,.A, ,44A , ,,,.., ,, 1 an ,, W Q-I .,,, V V ...,, M 5 , ,,A 'f i A , at , , Q I: I W f f qi ia I - ,. - r -. King. Led by the strong running of the team captain Eric Plutzer and first year man Eddie Gray, the Stuyvesant powerhouse team finished its dual meet with an undefeated season. This year's team was exceptionally strong, placing eight men under the fifteen minute mark for the hilly two and a half mile course. They were Eric Plutzer, Eddie Grey, Paul Horn, Pat Dougherty, John Klein, Eric Lipson, Peter Kintzer, and Dean Marsh, On the freshman scene Stuyvesant was finally represented by King Wai To who placed firgf in Manhattan and fourth in the city. Under the coaching of Mr. Charles Sharkey the team did exceptionally well in the Manhattan championships, placing nearly the entire team in the trophy winning spots. The team was well on its way to capturing the division crown by defeating julia Richman in the opening meet. Richman, considered to be the only threat on the schedule was downed 35-24. The remainder of the season went easily, defeating King 50-15, Franklin 45-20, Seward 42-19, and Chelsea 50-I 5 to complete a 5-0 season. The final meet of the season against G, VVashington was cancelled due to extremely inclement weather. Both Stuyvesant's varsity and its .l.V.'s placed second in the Manhattan Borough Championships.
